Microsoft Office 2003: This is my default word processor. Powerpoint is a critical component for me when preparing lectures and presentations. I use excel rarely, mostly just to view spreadsheets. I haven't had much use for Access in a long time. I've abandoned Outlook and never really found a use for One Note (I prefer to take notes on paper).

Other Office Software: I've got a 6 month demo of Office 2007 on another computer, but haven't really got used to the new interface, and haven't noticed any new improvements or features that I need compared with the older version. I also have Open Office on the backup computer, which I will revert to when the MS Office demo expires. When it comes to critical documents, like lectures and presentations, I stick with the real Powerpoint, because I don't want to have to worry about compatibility issues when working with strange computers.

Mozilla Thunderbird (With Lightning): This is my default email client. At the beginning, it took a little while to get used to it, but now I love it. I haven't used Outlook in over a year. With the Lightning calendar extension (and the addon Provider) I can keep my calendars synched with Google Calendar, making everything available both locally and online. Thunderbird works flawlessly with my Gmail accounts, and everything can be backed up and restored easily with MozBackup. The only thing I don't like about Thunderbird is that there is no way to easily synch your contacts with your Gmail contacts. It can be done, but it takes a little fidgeting.

Other Email Programs: I've completely abandoned Outlook. I have Windows Live Mail installed, and use it on occasion for my Hotmail account. The best feature is the ability to synch contacts between the local program and your online Hotmail contacts.

Mozilla Firefox: I only use IE for the rare website that doesn't work properly with Firefox. Firefox is infinitely more customizable than IE and I've got it configured exactly the way I want. With the program Mozbackup, I can easily backup all my passwords, bookmarks etc. which is handy.

Other Browsers: IE, but rarely used. Opera always gave me problems. Google Chrome is too new and I'm waiting for some of the security issues to get ironed out before I try it.

Avira Antivir: I constantly check the latest tests run on various antivirus software and Avira continuously ranks at the very top. There really isn't much difference between the pro and the free version as far as basic protection goes. As a matter of fact, I can't tell you what added features you actually get with the pro version. It's a lot easier on system resources than Norton and has a much higher detection rate. I tried Kaspersky in the past but it requires a lot of continuous input from the user and I was tired of the constant barrage of pop-ups asking me what action to take, even on the lightest settings. With it's great detection rate and easy-to-use interface, Avira is a clear winner for me.

Spyware Doctor: A free version of this is available from Google as part of the Google Pack software. You can choose to only download Spyware Doctor and not any of the other programs. I haven't had any problems with this program and all of the reports and tests I've read praise it's ability to find unwanted spyware on your system.

Other Anti-Spyware: Spyware Blaster is a cool, free program that prevents spyware from getting installed on your computer by blocking known bad things from getting to you. It doesn't scan at all, just immunizes.

Windows Live Writer: All of my blogging is done with this free program from Microsoft. It works like a charm and integrates easily with Wordpress.com and Google/Blogger/Blogspot blogs. It's easy to add pictures, graphics, links tags, categories and to save drafts, edit previous posts and so on. I can't recommend this one enough.

Windows Photo Gallery: I'm using the basic program included with Vista. A similar program is available free online from Microsoft as Windows Live Photo Gallery. It does basic image editing quickly and easily and is perfect for my basic needs. I've heard good things about Google's Picassa software, but it doesn't do anything that Windows Photo Gallery can't, and I'm satisfied with what I have.

Notepad++: This is my favorite text editor and it's freeware. It's more customizable than Notepad or Wordpad included with Windows. I do a little bit of programming on occasion and this utility makes the task much easier. I also use it to view all .txt files, including things like readme files.

Pidgin: Pidgin is the chat client that handles all of the major formats including AIM, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and Google Chat. I haven't had any issues with it and it does exactly what I want it to do.

Digsby Malware: I tried Digsby for a while, which adds things like Twitter and Facebook integration, but didn't care for it. Digsby automatically adds some things like it's own Google search to your browser, and that really set me off. The changes don't go away even after installing Digsby. It took quite a while to undo the stealth changes Digsby made to my system. While harmless, the idea of doing something without my permission ticks me off. About one month ago, the latest Digsby update crashed and wouldn't run on my Vista system. I uninstalled and re-installed, but the program still wouldn't run. I wrote Digsby off completely at that point. I don't have time for people who can't even make software that runs properly on Windows.

Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional: I use Adobe for PDF creation and viewing. I've heard a lot of good things about Foxit reader as a faster way to view PDF files, but since I have the full version of Adobe, I didn't see a need to have two separate programs, one for viewing and one for creating.

CC Cleaner: I've tried quite a few system utility programs and this is the one I stuck with. I haven't had any problems with critical files being deleted and haven't had any system crashes. In the past, a few more aggressive utilities have caused system issues for me. If you know what you are doing and are careful, these other programs can work well, but I like the ease of CC Cleaner and knowing I can trust it to not delete anything critical.

Both search and find do the same basic task; locate what we’re looking for in the document. The main difference is that find is a simplified version of search.

Find
Type a word into the find box and Acrobat highlights each instance of it in the document.

Search
The search box offers many more options, like the advanced search features in databases and on Websites. Search can also be done in multiple documents at one time. In addition to highlighting the results in the document, Acrobat returns the number of instances found and a hyperlinked list of the results displayed with nearby text.

Here’s an excerpt of what Acrobat’s Help tool says about search.

When you use the Search window, object data and image XIF (extended image file format) metadata are also searched. For searches across multiple PDFs, Acrobat also looks at document properties and XMP metadata, and it searches indexed structure tags when searching a PDF index. If some of the PDFs you search have attached PDFs, you can include the attachments in the search.

Search appears to be a very powerful tool of which I've only scratched the surface. And, depending what version of the software is being used this feature may or may not be available.

Trends in Indexing: the Long Tail or the End of the Tale?
In her presentation, Jan discussed some opportunities available to indexers as a result of changing digital technologies.

Some points to highlight:

• Changing digital technologies provide opportunities for indexers to take advantage of their skills and for specialization.
• The sales of E-books are increasing and require activated indexes.
• Social tagging requires controlled vocabularies for findability.
• “Precision recall doesn’t go away just because you have a search button.”
• Create “intelligent partnerships” for success.

How are Portable Document Files (PDFs) used in Indexing?
The presenters included Ed Rush, Carolyn Weaver, Jan Wright, & Enid Zafran and the discussion was moderated by Cheryl Landes. The indexers discussed how they use PDFs to work productively.

Here are a couple of Acrobat’s lesser known capabilities worth exploring. Of course, the ability to perform some functions is dependent on the software version in use.

1. Acrobat has a compare documents feature that allows the comparison of an older document against a newer document.
2. Find and search are different.

The Legal Indexing Workshop
Enid Zafran discussed the differences between legal indexes and other indexes and had attendees work through hands on exercises, involving “treatment of cases,” rules for sorting, and cross-references.

It quickly became apparent that legal indexing can be tedious and knowledge of the US legal system is essential.

Enid recommended two reference resources:

1. Black’s Law Dictionary, by Bryan A. Garner
2. The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, by Harvard Law Review

Enid also recommended online reference resources that can be found as part of a law school site. One resource I’ve found highly educational and useful is the Legal Information Institute at Cornell Law School.

For an introduction to law, Legal Research in a Nutshell (O'Reilly Media Nutshell series), by Morris L. Cohen and Kent C. Olson was recommended.

I've only posted a tiny bit about my take away from the meeting. It would be interesting to hear what others think about these topics. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

Fitur Firefox 3 yang Tak Banyak Diketahui

Fitur-fitur seperti awesome bar (location bar yang baru), menunda dan memulai kembali download, proteksi terhadap malware, tampilan baru dan peningkatan kinerja untuk Firefox 3. Semua fitur-fitur di atas sudah banyak yang tahu, tetapi tahukan Anda bahwa Firefox 3 juga memiliki fitur-fitur berikut ini:

1. Blok teks yang tidak beraturan:Kita bisa melakukan blok pada teks yang ada dihalaman web secara acak. Lakukan blok pada salah satu baris teks, lalu tekan tombol Ctrl (Cmd untuk Mac) untuk menambah teks yang akan diblok tanpa menghilangkan bekas blok yang terakhir tadi, sehingga kita bisa menyalin beberapa kata yang penting dengan mudah.
2. Duplikasi tab:Tekan tombol "Ctrl" di keyboard saat melakukan drag sebuah tab ke tempat kosong untuk menduplikasi tab yang ada beserta sejarahnya. Fitur ini tidak ada di Firefox versi Mac.
3. Memindahkan tab ke jendela lain:Cukup dengan melakukan drag tab yang ada dan drop ke jendela browser lain. Jika tab yang dipindahkan merupakan tab satu-satunya di jendela tersebut, jendela browser tersebut secara otomatis tertutup.
4. Merubah ukuran search bar: Kita dapat mengubah search bar dengan melakukan drag pada garis pembatas yang berada di antara search bar dan address bar (tidak terlihat pada Firefox versi Windows dan Linux, tetapi tetap trik ini tetap dapat Anda lakukan).
5. Menambah keyword pencarian: Pada search bar klik ikon mesin pencari untuk membuka dropdown dan lalu pilih "Manage Search Engines...". Pilih salah satu search engine yang ada kemudian klik "Edit Keyword..." Masukkan kata kunci tertentu untuk mesin pencari tersebut, contohnya untuk Google kita menggunakan keyword "go."
   Setelah menambahkan keyword, kita dapat menggunakan Google melalui address bar dengan mengetikkan keyword mesin pencari yang ingin Anda pakai, spasi dan kata kunci yang hendak kita cari. Contoh "go berita komputer" (mencari kata kunci berita komputer dengan Google). Fitur ini berguna untuk Anda yang sering menggunakan beberapa mesin pencari yang berbeda.
6. Mesin pencarian add-ons terintegrasi: Sekarang kita tidak perlu lagi mengunjungi situs AMO (Add-ons Mozilla), karena sekarang sudah fasilitas untuk mencari dan mendownload langsung add-ons yang ada di Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons.
7. Menonaktifkan plugin:Salah satu komponen yang sering menyebabkan Firefox crash adalah plugin yang tidak ditulis dengan baik. Sekarang Anda bisa menonaktifkannya salah satu plugin yang ada melalui Add-ons Manager di Tools > Add-ons > Plugins. Walaupun sudah ada sejak Firefox 2, tetapi fitur ini tidak banyak digunakan.
8. Melacak penyebab crash: Pada address bar ketik :"about:crashes" untuk mendapatkan daftar kejadian crash yang dikirimkan oleh Breakpad (reporter Mozilla khusus crash). Klik salah satu laporan crash untuk mendapatkan detil informasi yang disediakan oleh Socorro (server Mozilla khusus untuk melaporkan masalah crash).

Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta Dirilis

Opera Software baru saja merilis versi beta pertama untuk Opera Mobile 9.5 kepada publik. Versi beta ini memiliki kinerja yang bahkan lebih cepat lagi dari versi Opera sebelumnya, berbagai fitur baru, lengkap dengan efek visual dan tampilan baru.

Opera telah mengubah tampilan dari mobile browser pada versi beta ini. Perubahan paling drastis dari versi stabil Opera Mobile (8.65) yang terbaru adalah dukungan untuk menampilkan halaman situs secara penuh. Lenovo Saingi Macbook Air dengan ThinkPad X200

Apakah Anda ingin membeli laptop yang ringan dan tipis, namun tidak memiliki cukup uang untuk membeli MacBook Air? Kabar baik, Lenovo telah mengumumkan satu lagi tipe laptop tipis dengan "ThinkPad X200", yang dianggap sebagai pesaing MacBook Air, tapi dengan harga yang jauh lebih murah. Dengan berat sekitar 1,3kg dan baterai standar, X200 hadir dengan layar 12,1", solid-state drive 64GB atau HD konvensional 320GB, dan pilihan drive Blu-Ray. Dimensi laptop ini adalah 11,6"x8,3" dan ketebalan 0,8".

X200 akan menggunakan prosesor Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 sampai 2.4 GHz dan RAM maksimum 4GB. Walaupun begitu, laptop ini tidak untuk dipakai para gamer karena menggunakan integrated graphics chipset (IGC). Sebuah pilihan juga diberikan berupa baterai 9-cell, menambah berat namun memperpanjang waktu pakai mencapai 9 jam.

Di balik semua kelebihan di atas, ada beberapa hal yang harus dikorbankan, seperti eksternal optical drive. Selain itu, juga tidak tersedia trackpad.

Dari segi aestetika, memang X200 masih belum dapat menyaingi Apple, tetapi harganya yang jauh lebih murah (sekitar US $1.199) mungkin akan membuatnya populer di antara para individu dengan mobilitas tinggi.(TG Daily)

Meniru Apple, Microsoft Luncurkan Windows Mobile Apps

Satu hari setelah Apple meluncurkan App Store, Microsoft langsung mengumumkan usahanya untuk menyaingi hal tersebut. Portal baru yang didukung oleh Silverlight tersebut menyandang nama "Windows Mobile Apps" yang berslogan "DO MORE", bertujuan untuk mempromosikan semua aplikasi yang sudah tersedia untuk Windows Mobile (diperkirakan sekitar 18.000).

Walaupun jumlah aplikasi masih terus bertambah, Microsoft terlalu memaksakan strateginya ini. Microsoft terlihat hanya mengutamakan "animasi flash" dan meninggalkan "utilitas" di belakang.

Microsoft tidak mengambil keuntungan dari penjualan aplikasi, mereka hanaya menawarkan sebuah situs yang bisa digunakan pengguna untuk mencari dan menemukan software baru. Masalahan utama adalah para pengguna tidak akan menemukan banyak aplikasi baru tanpa adanya fungsi "pencarian".

Tidak memberikan fitur pencarian, Microsoft justru menciptakan karusel yang lambat untuk melihat-melihat aplikasi. Pengguna memang bisa mensortir grup aplikasi dengan kategori-kategori sebagai berikut: Semua aplikasi, Industri, Sales Force Enablement, tenaga lapangan, navigasi GPS, dan lainnya.

Setelah memilih sebuah aplikasi, pengunjung dapat membaca detil lebih lanjut seperti mengunjungi situs pengembang atau mengunduhnya. Tetapi, dengan menampilkan fitur-fitur di atas, Microsoft tampaknya lebih ingin memamerkan fitur dari teknologi Silverlight dari pada membuat situs yang bisa menyampaikan pesan lebih efektif.

It is not that easy to save a PDF to Microsoft SharePoint using out-of-the-box Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.  And yet PDFs are important to a lot of organizations and more and more organizations are looking to use SharePoint as their document management platform.  There needs to be a better way, which is just what MacroView have provided with their new WISDOM PDF SharePoint Save plug-in for Adobe.

Installing WISDOM PDF SharePoint Save adds a ‘Save to SharePoint’ item to the File menu of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat.  It also adds a custom ‘Save to SharePoint’ button to the Adobe Reader toolbar, which is convenient when you have opened a PDF from a website, and so Adobe Reader is running inside your web browser.

When you click ’Save to SharePoint’ you get an intuitive tree-view display of your SharePoint environment, so that you can easily choose the document library where you want to save the PDF.  The tree-view respects SharePoint security, so you only see those sites and document libraries for which you have at least Contributor permission. The tree-view initially locates the the document library that you used most recently (which is nice).  The tree-view display provides a number of ways that make it quick to navigate a large SharePoint environment and find the site and library that you want.

Once you choose a document library and click OK you are then prompted for any meta-data that is defined in that document library. The plug-in supports multiple Content Types and all the column types available in SharePoint 2007 (including Business Data columns if you have the MOSS Enterprise license).
