Opera is possibly the fastest browser currently out there - certainly the fastest available in a final release. There are four features that Opera needs so that I would use it. "Bookmark all tabs", a dropdown selector showing the title of all the tabs (like in Firefox; I know about the tab preview, but gliding over the tab bar is cumbersome), a scrapbook like Firefox' scrapbook extension, and good ad blocking. As it stands, I'll probably be swayed to continue with Firefox if they live up to the 3.1 speed promise in the final release. Otherwise it will be a tough call. Hmmm... Webkit? V8? Except for Opera's exceptional security track record, those other contenders offer nearly the same features.

Well, I love the anodized black MacBook Pro, but $150 extra? Apparently the matte black MacBook was worth $150 extra. Come on Apple, $25 is enough for the anodized color.

On Tuesday, Apple will unveil their new line of notebooks. The new MacBook Pro is unlikely to have tapered sides, because it would be to hard to access the port without compromising the aesthetics.

It is incredibly difficult, in my opinion, to express why you love what you love in a coherent manner. For inspiration, I looked at example personal statements. None of them, even though they were allegedly good ones, rang true to what I want to say. I don't want to talk about my lifelong interest in physics, because that firstly would be a lie. I thought I was going to be a school psychologist from the time I was in third grade until 11th grade during physics. I also am ambivalent about the lifelong passion idea; I know it's true for some people, but at the same time, I've met so many people (like Middle Eastern dancers) who are just as passionate and enthusiastic about their thing and they haven't spent nearly as many years loving that. It just seems like an irrelevant detail.

And then there's the question of what makes me unique out of the other applicants (why would they want me over someone else). Only two things come to mind: earning an MS and having varied research experience. I'm not sure that this is enough. I haven't published papers (the nature of my research has not, unfortunately, led to that), worked any place incredibly impressive, etc. I'm hardworking, capable, easy to get along with, and so on, but that can be said about many people.

I'm glad that I started now vs. later. On my calendar, I decided to work on my personal statement every Saturday.That isn't to say I'm not going to think about it on non-Saturdays, but I've decided to specifically devote time on Saturday to it.  I'm hoping to knock this thing out by the beginning of Nov.

Under Google Chrome's privacy mode, Google promotes the 'incognito' feature by which preference may be made for whether to log a window on the computer.

Everything gradually gets optimally customized by Google Chrome to satisfactorily meet web requirements geared toward tough changes in the future so that adjustment with this area of revolution wouldn't be dramatically unstable. Its beta version released for Windows looks promising for both Mac and Linux which the Google Chrome has since recently configured with, owing to Apple's Webkit and Mozilla Firefox among other source projects it might further avail of, thus, keeping the competition with other options even.

First, he warned applicants against asking to defer their acceptance ("It’s not like undergraduate acceptance"). Clearly, that is sage advice. I'm amazed that people even consider doing that. But the second bit in his post was what got me:

One more thing. I did hear from a senior professor who has held posts at two of America’s top universities that a student who has applied, is turned down, and then applies again the next year does indeed have a strike–or two–against him or her. He didn’t presume to speak for every school everywhere, of course, but he did seem to think this was the way it was commonly done, and he is very widely connected.

Wait, what? It's counted against you if you reapply to a program that turned you down last year? My entire application strategy was based upon applying to the top tier programs first (all programs that I would say "yes" to without regret) along with some ThM (or equivalent) programs. If I got universally rejected at the PhD level, I'd do a ThM (or equivalent) somewhere and do a second round of applications the next year (with which I would widen the net to "second tier" schools). In the end, I did have two advanced one-year masters programs to choose from, but I am so happy that I got into UCLA as it is really the perfect program for my interests in New Testament social history.

John Stackhouse's well-connected friend shares information that goes against what I thought to be true. If I had been universally rejected at the PhD level, I would be doing another master's program right now and panicking a bit. I'm not sure I understand why a school would make it harder for a re-applicant the second time around, unless that applicant had done nothing to improve or had somehow gone backwards. In response to my amazement and confusion, Prof. Stackhouse commented:

I understand your confusion and, perhaps, dubiety, Brother McCullough. I strongly supported one of our graduates who was in precisely this case and whose case elicited this response from my friend. I only pass it along as something my friend sees as common in elite schools: If you’ve been considered and turned down once, you face a steeper hill the next time. It doesn’t make sense to me either, but there it is.

Something to consider very seriously for those who are applying!

Het was inmiddels de vierde keer op rij dat ik erbij was en wat opvalt is dat de techniek als onderwerp nog steeds een belangrijk onderdeel uitmaakt van de conferentie, maar dat de gebruikerservaring uiteindelijk de rode draad in een groot aantal presentaties bleek.

Een goede dienst of webapplicatie vanuit het perspectief van de gebruiker moet de belangrijkste focus zijn van iedereen. Kathy Sierra gaf als laatste keynote spreker hiervoor inspiratie met haar voordracht '15 Ways to let your users kick ass'. Deze presentatie is helaas niet online terug te vinden. Maar anderen hadden eenzelfde insteek.

Om je gebruikers los te kunnen laten gaan, moet je in de ontwikkeling van je dienst ook focussen op die gebruikers en niet op de techniek. Ben Huh van I Can Has Cheezburger? stipte dit onderwerp aan in een leuke presentatie over hoe zijn lolcats-platform groeit. De valkuil voor iedereen die een webapplicatie (of website) ontwikkelt, is de verkeerde focus, namelijk die op de behoeften van de 1% hardcore-gebruikers. Dat zijn de bezoekers die misschien wel 40% van je bezoek veroorzaaken, maar die ook geavanceerde eisen stellen. Het is echter belangrijk om je juist te focussen op de hele grote groep casual gebruikers, die misschien maar weinig langskomt, maar die je wel fan kunt laten worden, door ze genoeg aandacht te geven en hen de juiste ervaring te bieden. Fans die uiteindelijk voor een vliegwiel-effect kunnen zorgen en je bezoekcijfers kunnen laten exploderen.

Zodra je de casual users tot fans van je dienst hebt weten te maken, is het van belang om ze te blijven vasthouden. Digg en Friendfeed zijn daarom druk doende om hun dienst op individueel niveau waardevoller te laten zijn. Op dit moment hebben beide diensten last van een aantal hardcore gebruikers. Bij Digg zijn dat een paar duizend geregistreerde gebruikers die zo fanatiek berichten omhoog stemmen, dat zij bepalen what's hot and what's not. Het gevolg is dat op de homepage van Digg nu vooral politieke en technische onderwerpen de boventoon voeren. De vraag die Digg nu probeert te beantwoorden is: Hoe kan elke gebruiker waardering krijgen voor zijn participatie. Ook de gebruiker die verhalen diggt over niche onderwerpen. En hoe kunnen we ervoor zorgen dat de liefhebber van niche-onderwerpen ook interessante inhoud krijgt voorgeschoteld?

Friendfeed zit op een soortgelijk pad. Voor elke gebruiker worden de statistieken uitgelezen en genalayseerd. We vinden namelijk niet allemaal elk bericht van Robert Scoble of Jeremiah Owyang zo reuze interessant. Door de huidige opzet zullen hun bijdragen vooral in de toplijstje terecht komen. En de foto die een goede vriend met me wil delen blijft ongezien. Friendfeed zal zorgen dat op basis van je profiel, de bron, het onderwerp en op basis van social validation voor mij alle interessante inhoud zichtbaar wordt. Ook de foto van die casual gebruiker, zonder dat die wordt ondergesneeuwd door de praatgrage Scoble.

Naar mijn idee is dit een vooruitblik op wat komen gaat. We willen natuurlijk allemaal dat internet voor ons gaat werken. Zeker na die enorme hoeveelheid input die we hebben gegeven op die tientallen social networks. Web 3.0 is here to come?

There are the little things that bother me when I'm using a computer and doing something specific, and to solve these problems I have this idea where my applications or most likely operating system looks at what I'm doing and adjusts the settings of all other applications to suit my desired set-up. In a nutshell think of it as desktops or OS-X spaces that go beyond just showing and hiding certain windows or applications.

Some examples of what I would like it to do

Situation 1.

I am working in my graphics applications and based on the fact that I have Photoshop, TextMate and maybe Dreamweaver open.

So the computer should do the following.

* Mute my new email notification sound.
* Mark me as busy in any IM client I have open.
* Fire up my 'working' playlist in iTunes but lower the volume.
* Check that I have the right screen settings and chosen calibration file in the OS settings for correct display and also change the desktop background to a nice neutral gray so my eyes are not tricked on color evaluation.

Situation 2.

I have Logic Studio open and have incoming audio from my Firewire 410 interface, so clearly I have an instrument plugged in and might be recording or jamming.

So the computer should do the following.

* Mute all system sounds and notifications other than those generated by Logic or my audio interface application.
* Hide all applications except Logic and my audio interface
* Reconfigure my audio settings so everything is set out thru my Firewire 410 and disable any other applications that might be changing the sound (I use Hear and/or SRS iWOW) so I am only hearing the raw Logic audio thru my studio speakers.
* Mark me as busy on any IM client and close any applications that I have listed for this particular context, for example I don't need my email client open and Logic will appreciate the extra memory it might free up.

Now I am sure we are a way from this kind of computing and operating system, but it sure would be nice if someone could solve the problem. My programming skills are not up to it, but who knows maybe one day I'll figure it out.

I'm talking about Last.fm streaming in Novell's Banshee media player. If you need any information on the internet music service Last.fm, head over to its wiki to get educated. If that's not necessary, then you likely know that Last.fm works like any other internet radio station, when you toss aside the fact that it's a website, and it attempts to guess what you like, and also that it can be narrowly tailored to your liking.

For constant Firefox users and Add-on fanatics like myself, there's even a Firefox toolbar called Fire.fm that beats being chained to the Last.fm website, every time. It can start a station when you open your browser, and keeps playing wherever you roam on the net. No more "Shit, I've closed the wrong tab. Looks like I need to visit the page again and restart my station. Too bad I've been dying to hear that Stones song for the longest time, and now it's gone..."

At the present, most if not all full-fledged media players for Linux offer some type of Last.fm support. What I haven't seen until Banshee is the wonderful ability to see several songs at a time, almost like a temporary playlist, from which you can choose your next song. It's like your music library has been extended and made even more dynamic, by bringing in the internet to your desktop.

Anywhere else, including Last.fm's own website, the playback only shows you the current song. Rhythmbox does this, and so does Amarok. See the screen grab to get a better idea of what Banshee is doing instead:

Let's say you're a Last.fm user (if not and you've been feeling limited by your library lately, and don't buy too many cd's, like me: this is a good reason to start using it) wouldn't you prefer this type of playback? This functionality changes the whole game for Last.fm, it's no longer a boring stream you have little control over, like internet radio. This is a whole other playlist your plugged into thanks to the internet. But can Last.fm's website even do this? No. Two points to you, Banshee team.

But hold on, that's just Last.fm

I'm thrilled about this feature I stumbled upon, that has drawn me away from Pandora and back to using Last.fm again. However, with more dedicated use of the Banshee player (which by the way, also plays video--take that Rhythmbox) I have a few things I have to nitpick. Keep in mind that the tested release of Banshee was version 1.2.1...

  1. From the first use, Banshee tried to be nice and help me migrate from my other media players which I still use. And I keep around Amarok, Rhythmbox (favorite), and Xfmedia. When Banshee tried to pull my playlist info from Rhythmbox, it dumped the playlist in the Music Library in a rather haphazard way that needs to be immediately fixed. Songs were ordered descending by track number, and despite many clicks and checks into the Preferences, no other sorting was possible. Also, 'browsing', or narrowing by Artist or Album criteria, was totally broken, too. There is a solution--don't import from other players. Do it from scratch and tell Banshee which directories or devices to look to for your Media Library. All is fixed with that.
  2. Secondly, and quite possibly what irks me the most about the Banshee player, is the illogical and troublesome way it handles Albums . Case in point--I have a compilation called The Second Wave that I snagged when I worked at Starbucks, and many artists are on the album such as Joy Division, Roxy Music and The Smiths. I'm often an album-listener, so I might try to narrow my playlist to just that album and enjoy it's Post-punk/New Wave goodness. But as they say, I can "fuhget about it." Know what Banshee does? It lists the album name several times, once for each artist that belongs to it. That does not make sense! I solve this by sorting my entire Library by Album name and playing through an album unshuffled. Alternatively, you can make individual playlists that include songs from that Album. It shouldn't take that long to hear my albums.

Those problems (and possibly others) aside, I think Banshee is a nice media player. I had to throw some rocks at it, but I am happy that it offers video playback in the same app as music, podcasts, internet radio and Last.fm. I can't speak to it's podcast playback as I haven't loaded any new ones, and Banshee lumped my old iTunes podcasts (from my Win XP install) together with regular music files.

Another great feature that I have yet to use is the disc burning that's available straight from Banshee, provided that you have Brasero Disk Burning. However, I see no way to choose a different burning program if you don't use Brasero.

I also read in Linux Format that iPod support in the current release is pretty solid. One thing that caught my eye was the way Banshee shows your iPod's disk usage--just like iTunes does. Check out the screenshot I found.

As soon as Banshee cleans up its act which it likely will do in the near future, Rhythbox et al may get a run for their money. This may be to iTunes what OpenOffice is to Microsoft Office--a near drop-in replacement for an old app left behind in the jump from Windows to Linux. I use Banshee 1.2.1 frequently to learn my way around it and discover little faults like those I described above, but for now I have run back to Rhythmbox, and I feel much better using that. For the future of Banshee on SUSE releases and your own desktop, things are looking pretty good.

Enter into Parallel Kingdom! This new game is exploiting into a virtually empty space in mobile game industry where your move abouts in the real world actually have something to do with the game.

Their  blog writes

Parallel Kingdom uses location-based features to place the virtual world over the real world, where you can kill creatures, collect gold, and destroy your friends.

Im still not exactly sure what we are supposed to do in this game! I'll have to experience it. From the looks of it, Parallel Kingdom is based completely on the location based services of your iPhone, iPod, Android - GPS but appears to have ignored their graphic capabilities. I mean com'on! We could have a much better game design other than just laying out maps slapped with icons. Nonetheless, Parallel Kingdom is still in beta stage and deserves to be recognized for its promising concept. It can spark a whole new range of games in this "location based" category.

And its game-network combines iPhone, iPod, Android. In other words, if you see a lot of players in your area rest assured, they're all Apple eaters or Googlers!
