From 1871 until 1917, there was a Blackheath Hill Station, just west of the heath. The wondeful Subterranea Britannica has some great photos of how it used to look, how it was filled in with earth, and a particularly good shot of part of the platform re-emerging out of the ground during building works.

These days the station has been replaced by an estate of houses. I can't help wondering if the residents of the houses built above the station sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, hearing ghostly steam trains rattling beneath their floorboards.

Have a look at the photos here. The whole of their site is well worth a look - the mysteries of the deep level london shelters especially.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the courtyard is open until 11 p.m.! Right now, there’s a juicy show featuring American art: “The American Scene features around 150 outstanding prints by 74 leading modern American artists, including George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois and Jackson Pollock.” Really nice gift shops.

Getting there: Take the Northern line tube to Tottenham Court Road. Or get out one stop earlier at Goodge Street, which has a working elevator instead of escalators, and walk down Tottenham Court Road.

The colors of Sante Fe are intense despite the constant flood of bright sunlight. There is little haze there in the dry air. I loved the red of the adobe tiles that roofed this theater against the blue and white of the sky.

About an hour after this shot taken, the lovely white cumulus spread and darkened the sky, dumping hard rain in a downpour so loud and intense that conversation has to be shouted to be heard. I'd set out on foot that morning with only my camera - and no jacket or bag to protect it. A kind shop keeper offered me a plastic bag to tie around my Nikon, and I learned that flash flooding does indeed happen in a flash.

The bus to Ankara turned out to be a bit more exciting than we had planned. The driver claimed he didn’t know he had to stop in Ankara on his way to Istanbul, so insisted on passing the exits. After a series of phone calls, and some remarkably polite and persistent intervention from Yekta, we arrived somewhere–anywhere–in Ankara and got off the bus. We managed to find four taxis despite the late hour (1:30 am) and made our way to the dorms at Bilkent University.

When our planned speaker postponed the next morning, I offered the students a day off to explore Ankara. Instead, they wanted to go out to Gordion, a site where UNC Classics Professor Ken Sams leads an excavation. After taxi, dolmus, and bus rides, we found ourselves looking up at a mound that had previously been a city.

I loved Ken Sams’ discussion. We had encountered many guides who provided details about the stones. Ken is a historian. He told us what is known about the people who had lived at Gordion, how we know the things we know about them, and what we don’t know yet. As we stood looking into the stone walls between structures, he told us that the same things had been found in each. These implements provided information on food and textile manufacturing technology, but not why the same things had been found in each room. Archaeologist still don’t know who did the production, and how labor was organized.

Ken explain to us the kinds of things archaeologists can know, what they wish they knew, why they think other kinds of records may no longer exist. And we learned that archaeologists sometimes revise their previous judgements. We visited the tomb of King Midas. Ken explained, though, that new dating suggested that the corpse was Midas’ father, making it still the tomb that Midas built, but not quite, well, the tomb in which he was buried.

Into the Tomb

At the small museum next to the excavation, one of the graduate students working at the site explained that the local population had emulated Hellenistic pottery–it was quite the style in some circles. But they didn’t understand some of the Greek pottery's particular functions, so their imitations are of great interest when analyzing cultural transmission. Ken had talked about the Greeks’ bringing their own languages and customs to Gordion–and to Anatolia generally–but both he and his student emphasized that the local, pre-Greek population remained present throughout the countryside. So what is a “Turk?” It was Phrygians who lived at Gordion–or anyway, it was a Phrygian government who ruled the people. And, it seems, the local population learned from the Greeks, but the Greeks also picked up some of the local customs.

The second Ankara morning was devoted to Atatürk, of course. I got to stay at the dorms with an ill student while William took the students to Anıtkabir, Atatürk’s mausoleum and museum. Their guide was a friend's father, a retired politician, former cultural minister, and a great admirer of the Founder. After reading of, talking about, and observing the Atatürk cult from afar, the students were able to get right to its center. I am sorry I missed it, but was delighted to hear about what the experience was like for them. (Check out their blogs, links on the right.)

By afternoon, everyone seemed well enough to go to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, where Thomas Zimmermann, archaeologist from Bilkent, talked to us about Turkey’s pre-history. He began outside, talking about the buildings themselves, how the project of taking Ottoman hans and turning them into an archaeological museum was an inherently political project. The goal was to claim a distinctly Turkish past, a past that predated the Ottomans, the Seljuks, and even the Byzantines. It reminded me of the new Lebanese state’s efforts to find its Phoenician past, and the nationalist Egyptians’ attempts to claim Pharonic origin. In this case, the new Turkish nationalists used archaeology to trace a very long historical trajectory, claiming that they descended from the Hattas and the Hittites.

This is an award-winning museum, displayed well and labeled clearly, organized coherently and quite beautifully presented. It creates a linear historical path from pre-historical people to the Turkish present, almost ignoring the Greeks and Romans, who seem to be off limits-- invaders instead of true inhabitants of the heartland. I found myself wondering how historians get to choose which groups are authentic and which are outsiders. But in any case, I think the students understand that there is much at stake in the project, more important than memorizing which artifacts go in which era.

Thomas’ fascination with metals was clear–it’s always exciting to have a teacher who is enthusiastic about his work.

Designed by Garber & Woodward and completed in 1921, the Dixie Terminal Building sits on the SW corner of Walnut and 4th Sts. It was originally built as a streetcar terminal and shops and offices, including the Cincinnati Stock Exchange. It later served as a bus depot and is now an office building.
A series of evocative, slightly abst

Critical Visions, 2008 RAIA National Conference, 12 April 2008

A series of evocative, slightly abstract images marked the start of Billie Tsien's keynote address at CV08. Described by Tsien as "objects of beauty and use" in the folk art tradition, these images set the tone for the address that touched on six Tod Williams/Billie Tsien (TWBTA) projects focussing on her particular approach to each architectural problem.

Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, as partners in work and love, have created a truly enviable architectural practice. Tsien spoke about their 16th floor Carnegie Hall apartment of over 30 years - apparently at the urging of Williams - is a compact, light-filled space, characterised by traditional art collected over the years. By revealing this personal space upfront, she set the tone for the projects that followed.

American Folk Art Museum (2001)
Part of New York's famous Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) family, the American Folk Art Museum is a compact, vertical building, characterised by large stair that winds a path through the building. Tsien affectionately called it the "jewel in the belly button of MOMA". As an infill building, the verticality of the form was generated in response to the context and site plan constraints, where the site is only 12 x 30 metres and accommodates a 2,800m2 program.

[wp_caption id="attachment_131" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="The 53rd Street facade of cast white bronze panels (American Folk Art Museum, 2001)"][/wp_caption]

Typically for TWBTA there are subtleties in the design, such as the angled sections of on the main facade in order to catch morning and afternoon sunlight which reveals surface detail, that highlight the depth of their design process. The surface detail apparent in the main elevation is the result of a exploratory prototyping process involving cast white bronze to create richly furrowed panels that add a layer of detail to the facade. Extensive research and reinterpretation of materials, not often employed in architecture, is integral to all their projects and, to me, distinguishes TWBTA's portfolio from other US architects.

As the galleries are stacked vertically, the museum is a "circulation rich experience" according to Tsien where the main stair in the core of the building and becomes a "basket that holds the light" from a skylight overhead. The internal spaces are idiosyncratic as Tsien says she is searching for buildings that are slowly discovered - not one liners - where there is a possibility of a dual reading of the architecture.

Cranbrook Natatorium (1999)
Within the context of a Eliel Saarinen designed campus with subsequent buildings by Moneo and Holl, the Cranbrook Natatorium, Michigan is a naturally ventilated pool with occuli (circular openings) in the roof allow light and air to circulate, sometimes even snow! Tsien described it as a "bent arm" building with walls in the landscape rather than terminating the grass courtyard on the site axis. Similar to Shim-Sutcliffe's re-appropriation of greenhouse skylight systems, Tsien used mining industry technology for the window and roof opening control mechanisms.

[wp_caption id="attachment_138" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="View along the bent arm of the Cranbrook Natatorium (1999)"][/wp_caption]

Starr East Asian Library (2008)
The result of a 13 year gestation, the Starr East Asian Library, University of California at Berkley was completed earlier this year. Responding to the neo-classical existing library, the 6,317m2 building is "a box for books" that is set into the slope of the site with a "face" (facade) fabricated from granite panels and a bronze screen cast in China. This screen filters natural light to the interior like a veil. Internal spaces were influenced by the Long Room at Trinity College, Dublin. Without the benefit of actually visiting the building, the interior appears far more successful than the relatively bland (for TWBTA) exterior envelope.

Tata Consultancy Services Campus (2010)
In a similar fashion, the Tata Consultancy Services Campus in Mumbai, India incorporates a modern interpretation of a "jali", a traditional stone carved screen used for centuries as both sunshade and ventilated wall. Interestingly, the construction process has commenced and Tsien explained the need for full-size prototypes of various facade elements to ensure quality and that the material detail is clearly understood. Close work with handcrafted materials and artisans was apparent in most of the buildings presented in the keynote and the Tata Campus, despite it's sheer size, is no different for TWBTA.

I. KOTA SEMARANG

I.1. Letak Geografis

Kendal.

I.2. Awal Pendirian Semarang

I.3. Masa Penjajahan

Di bawah kolonialisme Belanda perkembangan semarang cukup pesat dengan dibangunnya berbagai kepentingan Belanda, seperti :

a). Sarana dan prasarana perkotaan sepert jalan, transportasi kereta api, pasar-pasar dan sebagainya,

I.4. Pasca Kemerdekaan

I.5. Masa Kini

Dengan dasar Peraturan Pemerintah Rl (PP) No. 50/92 tentang penentuan Kecamatan-kecamatan, maka Semarang terbagi menjadi 16 Kecamatan.

REVOLUSI INDUSTRI

I. KOTA NEOKLASIK

I.1. Monarki Dan Monumentalis

I.2. Kota Zaman Barok

I.2.1. Versailles

I.2.2. Karlsruhe

II. KOLONIAL AMERIKA

II.1. New Amsterdam

II.5. Kota New York

I. PENGERTIAN KOTA BARU

Duff, 1964).

- Kota baru masa revolusi industri,

- Kota baru masa pasca revolusi industri,

- Kota baru masa kini.

IV.

V. KOTA BARU MASA REVOLUSI INDUSTRI

ARSITEKTUR MODERN

I. LATAR BELAKANG

II. TOKOH-TOKOH ARSITEKTUR MODERN DAN KARYA-KARYANYA

II.1. Le Corbusier (1889-1965)

Konsep perencanaan Unite d’habitation yaitu permukiman dalam sebuah unit tunggal. Le Corbusier merancang Notre-Dame-du-Haut Ronchamp sebuah kapel(gereja Katolik kecil) pada tahun 1945 hingga ia meninggal. Dan pada tahun 1955 Le Corbusier merancang biara Dominikan La Touret,di Perancis. Salah satu karya akhir Le Corbusier sebelum meninggal yaitu Pusat seni rupa Kerajian Kayu(Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts) 1963 di Cambridge, Massachusetts Amerika Serikat.

II.2. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)

Hasil karya Frank Lloyd Wright, yaitu :

Tahun 1922-1955, membangun Price Tower di Oklahoma,

Tahun 1952, membangun Wright’s house,

Tahun 1958-1962 merancang gedung Pusat Kesenian (cultural Center) Walfsburg, Jerman. Tahun 1948 Aalto memenangkan sayembara perencanaan National Pension Bank, Helsinki, Finlandia. Tahun 1959-1962 merancang kantor Pusat Enso-Gutzeit Company di Helsinki, Finlandia

II.4. Eero Saarinen (1910-1961)

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

I. PENGERTIAN

The first flat we stayed in was on King George, in central Tel Aviv. As of a week ago we have been staying at much nicer digs in the northern fringes of Yaffo. It's in an old industrial area with spots of weird gentrification and fancyness that reminds me quite a bit of Williamsburg.

The Metal Shutter Houses, designed by Shigeru Ban. This residential development is located in West Chelsea, New York. The Metal Shutter Houses consist of nine duplexes (spread over eleven floors) with motorized, perforated metal shutters that rise and fall separately. Aside from the "Wow!"-factor of living somewhere with huge metallic motorized shutters, they've got really nice interiors as well. The ground floor will host an art gallery as well as the lobby. This project marks Shigeru Ban's first endeavor into the US market. Currently, all but one of the units are already sold. The remaining unit can be yours for the miniscule price of $10million.

Last weekend we hosted 2 more visitors from Seattle, so we had yet another opportunity to play the role of local tourists. Besides taking the Brosts to some of our favorite restaurants in Orange County (such as Wahoo's, Zov's, Memphis, and Celinda's), we spent an afternoon at Huntington Beach, and a day at the Getty. Along the way Marissa tried to teach the art of the "candid self-portrait." We had a great time... if we could only spend every weekend playing catch at the beach and wandering around a great piece of SoCAL contemporary architecture with some of our favorite people.

I must admit that I am not an expert, in any way, in architecture! That said, I believe this to have at least some elements of Greek Revival, and was probably built just prior to the civil war. The bricks are made from our local red clay in Lynchburg, Virginia.

It would please me to no end if someone schooled in architecture would enlighten me on anything I have wrong during this project.

There is a big antagonism of the modern interpretation by the artist against the need to restore the grille to an unknown "historical state" and the artist's attempt to create authenticity will be lost on the causal tourist and transparent to the discerning lover of architecture. It is a shame.

A stupa (from Sanskrit and Pāli: m., स्तूप, stūpa, literally meaning “heap”)

A stupa (from Sanskrit and Pāli: m., स्तूप, stūpa, literally meaning "heap") is a mound-like structure containing Buddhist relics--once thought to be places of Buddhist worship--typically, the remains of a Buddha or saint.

According to sacred tradition architecture and town planning experienced a period of greatness during the third century B.C. under the patronage of Ashoka, the first Buddhist emperor, but their glory is imperfectly reflected in very few archeological finds. All the monuments were built of wood and clay: the wood rotted away, the clay crumbled from the force of the annual monsoon, the decoration of gold and precious stones fell into the hands of conquerors.

However, some burrial mounds, whose external hemispherical forms were built of baked clay, have withstood the passage of centuries. For the Buddhist monks the shape of the Buddha's burial or relic mound became the symbol of his teaching. At the sacred places of India they built a countless number of these stupas in brick or stone. In the monastery compound of Sanchi a brick stupa dating from the reign of Ashoka was expanded in the second century A.C. Taking over an old Aryan custom of surrounding sacred enclousers with a fence, the Buddhists surrounded the new stone stupa with a splendid stone railinig. The stupa, originally a monument over the relics of the Buddha or of a saint, acquired a second meaning. It became a geometric image of Buddhist cosmology, oriented as precisely as possible towards the four cardinal points and with its measurements based on numerical symbolism. The most important motifs were the circle and the sphere, i.e. rounded forms symbolizing rotation.

It's always exciting when other people take into account the hard work you and your team put out on a daily basis and rank you among the best of the best. At Inhabitat, we reached that ranking twice in the YAMoPo 2008 polls for architecture and architecture related sites.

Taken from ArchDaily: link to the original article after the jump...

We are architects, and during the last few years we have been reading and commenting on several architectural websites. As many of you do, we love to watch, learn and discuss about architecture online, with people from around the world. One day we decided to put all these sites together to get the whole picture on architectural sites, and then order them according to our likings. But in the meanwhile, we noticed it wasn’t that easy, because each one of us had different interests and approaches. In our listings, several sites were repeated, but in different places.

So, we decided to find a way to make a standardized procedure to rank and order these sites. Then we noticed Michiel van Raaij at Eikonographia repeated the ranking he started in 2007, the MoPo (Most Popular Architectural Blogs). Although Michiel did a very accurate job, he restricted it to English blogs from individual authors, leaving out several of our favorite blogs from either foreign languages or multiple authors, and some other sitess that mix architecture with other related subjects (design, sustainability, trends, etc).

To expand this rank, we decided to put together some common criteria. The most logical criteria should be the amount of visitors, but this is almost impossible since most sites don’t publish these stats. But there are some other factors you can use to measure the relevance of a website: (a) Rank of websites based on an estimate of their traffic, by Alexa, (b) Google Page Rank and (c) and the frequency of the updates, an average of the entries published in the last 2 months (done by us). That´s how we came up with YAMoPo (Yet Another MoPo).

With all this data, we started to compare our sites listings, and given their focus we decided to (1) shorten the list to the top 40 (after those, most sites don´t update much often) and (2) separate this listing in 2 types of sites: sites devoted to architecture only and sites that mix architecture with other subjects (trends, design, sustainability).

3 Conclusions

It´s clear that architecture exclusive sites are less popular than the ones that cover architecture, trends and design.

Most of the websites are in English (same as almost the whole Internet).

The frequency of updates is highly valued by visitors, which explain us why our blog isn´t at the end of the ranks despite being started a couple of months ago. Sites that have a better rank update frequently, even several times at a day.

During the next weeks we will present and explain some of these websites, in order to clarify the new panorama of architecture publications on the Web.

Also, as we found out that MoPo wasn´t accurate from our point of view, some of you might think the same about ours, so feel free to leave your comments and recommended sites.

And now, to the ranks:
