Great news!  Cullen Jones made the United States Olympic Swim Team!  He'll be swimming in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay in Beijing -- starting on August 10th.

Lia Neal also swam superbly.  She broke her own American age-group record in the 50-meter freestyle, she made the Junior National team, and she also qualified for the World Youth Games, but ironically she was too young to actually go.

“In September of 2002, at 31 years of age, I was diagnosed with ALS, a neuro-degenerative disease that kills 90% of its victims within five years. At the time, I was working as a playwright and actor in Chicago, running a painting company and changing my son’s diapers. Nine months later I began to make a documentary film chronicling my new life, not one I had chosen and unlike anything I ever could have imagined. Traveling by myself and then with a small crew we filmed the isolated world of ALS; interviewing patients and their families, medical professionals, scientists, religious figures and almost anyone we could find. I wanted to know (perhaps naively), “What does it all mean?”

Indestructibleis an attempt to understand and accept the reality of a mysterious and deadly disease that has brought science to its knees, an illness that is a paradigm for life’s ultimate challenges. My personal story in the film, and that of every ALS patient, follows this frightening path into an uncertain future. To show the broad and difficult landscape of medicine for ALS, or lack thereof, we have documented mainstream approaches, controversial stem cell surgeries, Chinese herbal treatments, vitamin supplements, vibrating beds, Yoga, and almost anything that might stop the progression of this horrific killer.

My initial purpose in making this film was to share the extraordinary moments, both dark and light, of a life with ALS, and there are many. I now believe Indestructible will be a catalyst, and mark a turning point for the millions who have and will suffer the wrath of this elusive beast, bringing us one step closer to what every sick person wants - a cure. Indestructiblehas at times provided answers to my questions, if only momentarily, and they are no substitute for my health. In the meantime, I will continue to search. When we unlock the secrets of ALS we will better understand not only neuro-degeneration, but also aging, environment, psychology, spirituality, and what it truly means to be both alive and facing mortality every day.”

1.  The first secret to becoming immortal is to give up your desire to be immortal.  Longing for immortality burns up your energy, uselessly, because it makes you chase a vain and shallow impossibility you can never catch (think: dog's tail).  The same senseless chase also keeps you from developing fully, so you end up pursuing frivilous goals... and immortality is the exact opposite of frivolity.  Accepting the fact that you will come to an end gives you a dose of humility and puts your ego in check.  It is ironic, but humility makes more room for greatness than egomania.

2.  The second secret to becoming immortal is to wildly and fearlessly explore The Thing that has attached itself to you in a life-altering way.  For some The Thing is an affliction of some kind.  For others, The Thing is an untiring fascination with something in particular.  And for many more, The Thing is a restless yearning or reaching for something beyond one's ordinariness.  A thirst for life that is Fuller, Deeper, Wider, Bolder, Cleaner, Simpler, Saner, Kinder, Juicier, etc.  These Things (a.k.a. mission, obsession, burden, etc.) that make themselves unmistakably known to you must be investigated... with the passion of a lover, the discipline of an athlete, the curiosity of a scientist and the technique of a detective.  Unturn every stone.  Be unreasonably determined to know the Essence of your life-altering thing.  The unfolding process may take years.  Your ability to understand what the heck unfolded may take even longer.  But there's no need to feel rushed about it, because this is the whole purpose of breath and blood and bones anyway... it is to figure out your piece of the puzzle, and then to...

3.  The third and final secret to becoming immortal is to share what you found with others.  When you give yourself to the task of figuring out your piece of the puzzle, you come across valuable insights and experiences that will make another person's life better.  So, it is your responsibility to be very attentive to your discoveries, and then to be very generous with them.  That's what Ben did with his documentary.  And it's why he is immortal.

You and I can do the same.

Watchdog finds documentary was unfair to scientists but did not mislead viewers

Channel 4 misrepresented some of the world's leading climate scientists in a controversial documentary that claimed global warming was a conspiracy and a fraud, the UK's media regulator will rule next week.

In a long-awaited judgment following a 15-month inquiry, Ofcom is expected to censure the network over its treatment of some scientists in the programme, The Great Global Warming Swindle, which sparked outcry from environmentalists.

Complaints about privacy and fairness from the government's former chief scientist, Sir David King, and the Nobel peace prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will be upheld on almost all counts, the Guardian has learned.

But it is understood that Channel 4 will still claim victory because the ultimate verdict on a separate complaint about accuracy, which contained 131 specific points and ran to 270 pages, will find that it did not breach the regulator's broadcasting code and did not materially mislead viewers.

The detail of the ruling is expected to criticise Channel 4 over some aspects of the controversial programme, made by the director Martin Durkin, but executives will argue that the key test of whether or not it was right to broadcast the programme has been passed.

One source said both sides would be able to claim victory after a bitter dispute that has raged in newspapers and online since the programme, billed as "a definitive response" to Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, was first broadcast in March last year.

The programme was criticised by scientists, who claimed it fundamentally misrepresented the evidence about global warming, that it rehashed discredited old arguments and manipulated data and charts to make its case.

The IPCC, King and other scientists including Dr Carl Wunsch, a climate expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, complained to the regulator over the way they were represented. Ofcom is expected to find in favour of King's complaint and three out of five of the IPCC's. One is expected to be thrown out and the fifth will be partially upheld.

In its judgment on King's complaint, Ofcom will say: "Channel 4 unfairly attributed to the former chief scientist, David King, comments he had not made and criticised him for them and also failed to provide him an opportunity to reply".

In the programme, the concluding voiceover from the climate change sceptic Fred Singer claimed "the chief scientist of the UK" was "telling people that by the end of the century, the only habitable place on Earth will be the Antarctic and humanity may survive thanks to some breeding couples who moved to the Antarctic ... it would be hilarious if it weren't so sad".

King has never made such a statement and it is believed Singer confused his views with those of the contrarian scientist James Lovelock. King did once say that "the last time the Earth had this much C02, the only place habitable was the Antarctic".

Addressing the IPCC's complaint over 21 pages, Ofcom will rule that the programme "made significant allegations ... questioning its credibility and failed to offer it timely and appropriate opportunity to respond".

But Channel 4 has argued that the organisation had refused to cooperate with the programme-makers.

After the broadcast, Wunsch said the programme was "masquerading as a science documentary when it should be regarded as a political polemic" and was "as close to pure propaganda as anything since world war two".

He claimed he had been duped into appearing and his comments had been misleadingly edited.

The Ofcom ruling is expected to find that Wunsch was misled about the tone and content of the programme, but that his views were accurately represented within it. Durkin, who had previously made other controversial documentaries, including Against Nature and the Rise and Fall of GM, vigorously defended the broadcast.

"The death of this theory will be painful and ugly. But it will die. Because it is wrong, wrong, wrong," he wrote.

Channel 4 justified the broadcast by saying it was a useful contribution to a timely debate, arguing that it had a tradition for iconoclastic programming and had also aired programmes supporting the case for man-made climate change.

The producers claimed that after it was broadcast, Channel 4 received a record number of phone calls that were six to one in favour of the arguments made. The film was subsequently sold to 21 other countries. A global DVD release went ahead despite protests from scientists.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: "We wouldn't comment on any Ofcom ruling in advance of its publication." Ofcom declined to comment.

Review: King Lines is THE best climbing video I've seen. Actually, I stumbled across the trailer on youtube, and I was sold. I HAD to see this film!

The plot revolves around Chris Sharma, a climbing legend. Lowell and Mortimer's sponsors brings Sharma around the world looking for his perfect climb. He search trough the rocks of Greece and Malta in Europe before he boulders a bit in the US, climbs a few routes with his childhood gym trainer, and trek for days trough the Venezuelan jungle to find a hidden, magical bouldering spot. In between, there's some partying documented with hand held cameras, a competition in Barcelona, and a flashback and short introduction to Sharma's climbing career. Parts of this movie is set up to be a deifying of Sharma, but I'm sure he didn't want it to be like this.

Mostly it's just about the climbing. And it's so intense, I even had to take off my socks. I usually get sweaty palms when watching masters in action, but this is the first time my feet started sweating. I was tense all trough the 64 minutes of this movie, and I felt so great afterwards - I was on top of the world with Sharma by my side! Highly recommended!

For those of you who enjoyed Helvetica, there is a new movie coming out revolving around the Hamilton Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. (Drew and I are planning on visiting the museum sometime in the Fall - and I can't wait.) The film is called Typeface and it focuses on the disappearing art and trade of setting and printing with wood type. They also did a lot of filming over at Columbia College. Columbia has an impressive wood type collection too! In the past few weeks, having spent some time with the Vandercook presses, I have gained even more appreciation for this fading art and printing process. There is something so comforting in printing with wood type - even in the results and all the imperfections from age and use. In the future, I will be adding some letterpress illustrations and cards - so stay tuned
