Till 2006, I used only Microsoft Internet explorer for browsing. But somehow I felt uncomfortable with the speed and usability of this browser. Hence i decided to look for some other browser. After using few of the browsers like Firefox, safari, opera, Moxilla & Maxthon, I decided to choose between Firefox & Opera. The firefox was chosen finally considering the tabbed browsing, security features, password saving and usability. Even I did not completely ruled out opera, as it also offered me almost similar browsing experience. But i never used Internet explorer as I always felt it's usability features are not in sync with me. Even Internet explorer7.0, which came with tabbed browsing did not impress me. I continued with Firefox, and completely liked its tabbed features, bookmarks, pluggins, add ons and customisation.

The launch of "Chrome" from Google, tempted me to look at this new browser. I took no time to download and start using. The Google, which was known for its revolutionary search engine and other products expected to come out with something really different. The chrome offered me few very good features, but still lacked attraction. The browser look is good, tabbed browsing experience is good, the suggestions during browsing are all really nice experience. Also it gives preview of sites you frequently visit. The boom mark and customised tab based home page experience are also better. The speed also almost comparable to Firefox. However something was missing. The disaster is off course the toolbars. The chrome is not offering any toolbars or add ons. You can't even put Google's its own tool bar, leave alone yahoo or any other toolbar. This is an utter disappointment. The browser looks very simple and lacks the customisation facility of Firefox. This is only Beta version and I am sure the Google team will come up to make up for all the deficiencies. But it would have been more comfortable, had Google introduced this feature with all the facilities. Preview" width="300" height="244" />[/caption]

Till then , I am more comfortable with Firefox, which offers me hoards of features. Let's watch , how chrome develops and compete with Internet explorer and Firefox.

I sometime wonder how Internet explorer is able to sustain its 75 % market share. Probably its marketing works for it. Firefox is far more superior then Internet explorer and is not used by many. Probably since it is a open source browser, it marketing strategy is poor and hence it is unknown to many. But Google has strength to compete with Internet explorer and I am sure Google will address all the inherent issues and comes out with the excellent browser and may give run for money to Microsoft.

Google’s new browser, Chrome, is undoutably one of the fastest browsers available, but for me,

Google's new browser, Chrome, is undoutably one of the fastest browsers available, but for me, its speed and multiprocessing are the least of my favorite features. I think the team behind Chrome's UI have done an exceptional job of, "keeping things out of the way" and making the user experience incredibly simple. Here's why:

1. No Title Bar Or Menu Bar

Your tabs are your titles. Simple, no?

2. The Omnibox

You can navigate, search google, or use other search engines that you frequent, all on one box!

3. Hidden Bookmarks

Bookmarks only appear when you open a new tab. Unless you want them there all the time ofcourse :)

4. No Home Button

New tabs show you your most visted sites and search engines. No need to wait, or look at the "about:blank" page.

5. No Status Bar

The status bar only apears when it is needed; while hovering on a link or loading a page. Otherwise, it's not there.

6. Download Now, Deal With It Later

No more, "save" or "run" dialogs; you don't worry about the file names, where it's being downloaded or its source. Downloads sit quietly at the bottom of the tab that is associated with it until you open it or drag it out to your favorite folder. There's also a download log page that lets you search through your download history.

7. One Window

Websites that try to open up links in new windows are forced to open in new tabs, unless you pull them to form a seperate window. There are almost no dialog boxes or popups; everything is confined within the tab.

Overall, Chrome feels as though it's running on "full screen" mode all the time. If you spend a lot of time online, sooner or later you'll probably forget what your desktop looked like. If you haven't given it a try yet, head over to their site and see for yourself.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="150" caption="Google Chrome"][/caption]

Cosa?

Come?

- il selettore di schede;
- i pulsanti di navigazione;

We love Google Chrome. But quite frankly, the blue theme sucks on my black theme. If you've seen the screenshots of Google Chrome on XP vs Vista, you've probably noticed that the interface looks completely different. If you want to make your XP version use a slick black theme, you can do so with a custom hack.

Installing the Custom Theme

You'll first need to download the patched theme file from the link at the bottom. Next, open up an explorer window, and paste in the following to the address bar:

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application.2.149.27\Themes

You should see a file called default.dll, which you want to make a copy of before you do anything else.

Next you'll want to paste the default.dll contained in the theme's zip file into this directory. You should be prompted to overwrite the current file (which you should have backed up).

At this point, you can start up chrome and you'll see the new theme.

Removing the Theme

Simply delete the new default.dll file and rename the copy back to the original defualt.dll name. That's all there is to it. You should note that these themes will have to be re-patched every time a new version of Google Chrome is released, which could be quite often.

Google akhirnya meluncurkan browser garapannya. Namanya Google Chrome.

Kesan pertama, tampilannya sangat sederhana.

Setelah selesai mengunduh, aku langsung mencoba Chrome.

It's the success story to beat all internet success stories.

Ten years ago, on 7 September 1998, two young graduate students at Stanford University incorporated a company with the (then) odd-sounding name "Google".

Today, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are billionaires. Their company is hugely profitable; between April and June this year alone, it reported a turnover of $5.7bn (£3.2bn) and generated a net profit of $1.25bn (the first quarter was even more profitable).

Not bad for a company that makes its money being a broker for and publisher of online advertising.

The secret of Google's success, of course, is the algorithm driving its internet search engine. In fact, it is so good that it has entered our dictionaries.

People don't search the internet any more, they google it.

The secret sauce

Some critics accuse Google of being a one-trick pony and warn that competitors, newly emerging and potentially better search engines, are a mere mouse click away.

But Google's secret sauce has more ingredients than its clever way of organising and ranking search results.

Equally important is the technology underlying the vast data centres that give Google the scale, speed and efficiency to serve its rapidly growing number of users.

And finally there are Google's two money spinners: AdWords - which puts relevant advertisements next to Google's own search results - and AdSense, the revenue-sharing deals that put Google's context-driven adverts on third-party websites.

The clever thing here is Google's restraint. It auctions advertising space not to the highest bidder but the most relevant advertiser, making Google users happy and generating more lucrative click-throughs to the websites of the advertisers.

Google's real ambition

Google may be a money spinner, but the company says it has much more high-minded aims than making a fast internet buck.

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," claims its corporate vision statement.

Note the word universal. Whether high-minded or not, it is this "Google everywhere" ambition that makes it such a successful company.

Over the years, Google has been releasing a steady stream of innovative tools and services - some of them developed in-house, many others bought in from start-ups: Gmail, Google Docs for word processing and spreadsheets, Picasa for picture editing, Google Earth and Maps for location-based search and display of information, Blogger, YouTube's video service ... the list is seemingly endless.

Not that long ago this looked like random growth. But as these services get a more coherent look and feel, the pieces of Google's puzzle are falling into place.

Every search we do, every tool we use helps Google to gather more information and organise the artefacts of our knowledge society.

The price to pay

Providing an entry point to Google's search engine at every level keeps feeding our Google habit, and creates a virtuous circle: the more information Google has, the better its search results, the happier its users, the higher the click-throughs on adverts, the bigger the profits, the more money for new "free" services that entice users to surrender yet more information.

It may leave us happy and Google profitable, but is it a corporate disaster waiting to happen?

Messrs Page and Brin may famously - or notoriously - promise that Google "can make money without doing evil".

But with Google hoarding all this personalised and traceable information in its vast data centres, issues of data safety, privacy, and corporate Big Brothership are looming large.

The chrome Android

Google is expanding because the internet is expanding. The definition of where the internet ends is getting hazy, with devices like fridges, digital picture frames and mobile phones becoming part of the internet-enabled world.

The company's next steps are already mapped. This week it launched its very own internet browser, called Chrome.

Today's browsers were built to show web pages, says Google, not to be platforms for complex applications. Chrome promises to bring stability to our online experience - and the more computing happens on the internet, the more information Google can gather.

Coming shortly is an even more important piece of software called Android, Google's (Linux-based) operating system for internet-enabled telephones.

Google makes the same business case as for Chrome: today's smart phones were not designed for the mobile internet, so Google steps into the breach.

Partner or rival?

The company started ten years ago by two students has the size to do it all.

At the end of 2007 it had 16,800 employees, and is reportedly hiring about 100 new people each week.

But with Google spreading its wings and complementing more and more parts of our lives, a rapidly growing number of companies in ever more industries have to ponder whether this "search engine" is a partner, a competitor or a destroyer of business models.

Google's company motto could quite as well be: "Anything you can do I can do better - and for free."

It leaves even Google's largest rivals constantly stressed out - whether it is Microsoft (who saw the beta launch of its new browser Internet Explorer 8 overshadowed by Chrome), or ailing web portal Yahoo, which was forced to agree a revenue-sharing deal by outsourcing some of its advertising to Google.

Even the people who happily pay Google top advertising dollar are getting worried. They complain that Google's dominance could result in a lack of choice, not least since the company bought its way into the world of traditional display advertising on the web, through the acquisition of Doubleclick.

Triumvirate

This is especially true during the current economic downturn. Google expects that its revenue is going to hold up, because its advertising service is highly targeted and its success measurable. It's the old media with their mass medium approach that have to worry.

And to reassure investors, Google executives are pledging that they won't fall into the Yahoo trap of trying to turn Google into a media company.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt told Conde Nast Portfolio that "one of the general rules we've had is 'don't own the content; partner with your content company'".

But even here the lines are blurring. Is there a lot of difference between "old media" publishing the pictures and videos supplied by news agencies, freelance photographers and their own audiences, and Google News or YouTube?

For now, the Google juggernaut rolls on.

The two founders keep driving the company's technical excellence, and Mr Schmidt - a veteran of the technology industry - ensures that the money keeps coming.

This triumvirate has made an informal deal to stick together for at least 20 years, says Mr Schmidt.Plenty of time for Google to secure its position as the lynchpin of our internet economy.

Numai bine !

For many years, Google Maps has been my go-to mapping destination. It loaded quickly, had an easy to remember URL, user-friendly interface, and it gave me the results I was looking for. All the other major players including Yahoo!, Microsoft and MapQuest were basically playing catch-up with Google. I even used the Google Map API to mark For Sale listings on the map before the concept went mainstream in the Toronto market. Although Google Maps wasn’t perfect, it did many things right. It seemed like the site had gradually engraved into my subconscious so it was going to be challenging to pull me away from their service.

A year or so ago, Yahoo! launched a nifty upgrade to their mapping service. The application and maps were aesthetically better and built using Flash. However, the first time I used it has been my last so far. Basically, it couldn’t locate my home address – a very simple request. Nothing earth shattering but it just goes to show that you should not launch your service when it’s not ready! Small mistakes will lead potential visitors to your competition.

Lately, I’ve been migrating to Microsoft Virtual Earth. The URL (http://maps.live.ca) is somewhat hard to get use to but it definitely offers some benefits. I enjoy using the Collections Stratchpad when planning my home showing route. Also, a major one for me is updated map imagery. It seems Google has relaxed on its throne for too long. Users have sent requests stating that location ABC has the wrong image or location DEF images are outdated, but Google is slow to respond.

Below is an example of how outdated some of Google's imagery is:

[caption id="attachment_113" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Google Maps: Infinity (30 Grand Trunk Cres.)"][/caption]

Do you recognize this area? It's York & Bremner. Amenities include ACC, Union Station, Rogers Centre, CN Tower, and the lake to name a few. Considering there are cranes up, I guestimate this image was taken in mid-2005.

Now here is Microsoft's image:

[caption id="attachment_114" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Microsoft Virtual Earth: Infinity (30 Grand Trunk Cres.)"][/caption]

Both towers are complete! Of course, two issues with this image. There should be a parking lot to the immediate right of the building and, to the east of York Street, the Residences of Maple Leaf Square tower should be under construction. Those sections of the image need some updating but definitely a big improvement over Google's one. Obviously this is a terrible sample size but I conducted several comparisons and overall Microsoft had newer imagery. On top of that, Virtual Earth has a Bird's Eye view feature with provides very good street-level detail of Toronto. The Bird's Eye view is taken at a 45 degree angle from four directions north, east, south and west. The images are high-quality making it an excellent vehicle for potential home buyers to browse the neighbourhood.

Here's a Bird's eye view of The Residences of Maple Leaf Square (mentioned above):

[caption id="attachment_115" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Microsoft Virtual Earth: Bird's Eye View of Residences of Maple Leaf Square"][/caption]

If you have been in the area recently, you can tell that this image is very new. Microsoft mapping division has done a good job so far and I'm happy to see that. It's made my real estate life easier!

Not to be outdone though, Google does have a "Street View" feature that has launched in selected cities. Toronto is not one of them yet but there have been sightings of a Google Van with their large panoramic camera driving around the city. Once Street View is available in Toronto, Google can rest on their throne again.

Google Chrome, one of the latest products of Google in recent years, has adopted many sophisticated

Google Chrome, one of the latest products of Google in recent years, has adopted many sophisticated and latest web browsing technologies. Like all other products of Google, its simple but efficient. This software is open-source and is considered as one of the best contributions of Goggle in the open-source movement. The open-source developers throughout the world can now participate in developing this product. Google Chrome used many of the features used by Mozilla Firefox, another vastly used web browser in today's world. Chrome, using Java script-8 has kept open the future web technologies to be coped with it.

Web-pages, nowadays is decorated with various kind of data including images, videos, flash presentations etc. As a result loading the page quickly has become a challenging issue for all the present browsers. In this competition , Firefox and Opera were a bit ahead of rest browsers for last few years. However, accomplishing with the lightweight features Google Chrome is lighting fast to load any kind of page and its open-source characteristics always keep open the door for improving its skill even more.

From our experience of browsing internet, we know that the browser pages get hung in many of the cases and the browser needs to be closed creating a lot of problems for the users. But Google Chrome could avoid this problem efficiently using separate sandbox discrete form each other, so that if a page get hung , others are not affected. Another interesting feature of Google Chrome is the Incognito Window. Its like a way to browse without

leaving any footprint. Its can be considered as a read-only mode of browsing. You can use the history and bookmarks in this mode but it will not keep the history of your browsing in the browser's cache. Moreover it will delete all the cookies for Incognito Browsing.

Its very common in browsers that a JavaScipt hang the whole browser and you have to shut the browser down for that single tab. But it isnt the case for Google Chrome. Here, If you close a Tab , you are closing the whole process. This simple idea makes this browser extremely fast and an ideal platform to think for a future super-browser.

Besides all of its good features, I personally have got some troubles using Google Chrome. It shows me the message that it has to be shut down very often. Another problem is with its download manager. I dont get much flexibility there to resume, restart and re-order downloads. But I think this problems will be overcome by time. We all are hoping to get the more improved version of Google Chrome very soon.
