As we all know their are things in life beyond our control as well as not in our full understanding,

As we all know their are things in life beyond our control as well as not in our full understanding, nor will they ever be, so we tend to think. Through our lifetimes we are subtly conditioned to believe what we read in newspaper and view on the television through the repetition of falsities. We even believe what politicians tell us, including our President.

For the record, politicians don't have as much power as we'd love them to have in order to positively affect the world we live in locally and abroad. However, what they do have is the power to hinder mankind's natural progression through the passing of irrelevant laws made to solve posing problems that can be solved naturally in a sense; all which essentially play one part in a big cycle that is keeping all of us from living the lives that we deserve to live. Living freely, not slaving for money at our jobs nor being indentured servants to banks and creditors.

The media, our politicians, and the economy are all playing a part in creating false scarcity and unnecessary fears in our world perpetuating the inevitable, which is complete and utter failure of our long praised and upheld system.

I agree with the creators of Zeitgeist.

‘With completion of signal-free corridor 99% of CDGK vision realized’

‘With completion of signal-free corridor 99% of CDGK vision realized’

Daily Times Monitor

KARACHI: “Despite the shortage of funds, the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has completed Karachi’s mega project, Signal-Free Corridor-II, without politicizing the issue,” said City Nazim Mustafa Kamal during his exclusive interview with Jasmeen Manzoor of Business Plus.

Kamal said that the funds for two bridges, the Nagan Chowrangi and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Flyovers, were allotted according to the agreement but the federal government stopped allocating funds without giving reasons. “However, we considered it a challenge and stopped upcoming projects to complete Signal-Free Corridor-II,” claimed Kamal.

Kamal said that development work in the city is treated like a war and completed on a priority basis. Karachi is an international city that contributes 66 percent of the federal revenue so we cannot ignore development work. “We brought the concept of the signal free corridor for first time in Pakistan,” added Kamal.

Signal-Free Corridor-II was built on international standards. The corridor has been opened for traffic and this mega project will lessen traveling time and will definitely minimize the frustration of the citizens, said Kamal. He said that former President Musharraf inaugurated the ground breaking ceremony a year ago. “Musharraf was supportive of projects of this kind,” said Kamal.

He said that all ministers and MPAs were invited for the opening ceremony of Signal-Free Corridor-II but most seats were vacant for one reason or another. The federal and provincial governments should own the project. We want to convey a message to the world that such developments are being done even when suicide bombings are part of our daily lives. Whatever we are doing here is for the entire country and it should not be considered a political threat requested Kamal.

Kamal told Manzoor that almost 99 percent of his vision has been realized. “We want this government to be successful because if this government is successful, our country will be successful,” said Kamal.

Signal-Free Corridor-II is about 19.5 km long with five overpasses and an underpass catering to eight towns.

MQM’s coordination committee hails completion of signal free corridor-II: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) coordination committee congratulated City Nazim Mustafa Kamal on the completion of Signal-free Corridor-II from Shahrah-e-Faisal to Surjani Town.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the committee said that flyovers, underpasses, wide roads, scenic bus stops, schools and colleges completed under the leadership of the city nazim and city naib nazim have made the city beautiful.

The committee termed the completion of a 19-kilometer long corridor, costing Rs 3 billion, as a gift to the Karachiites saving their time and fuel.

Rolling Stone’s contributing editor, Tim Dickerson has wriiten a well researched piece about

Rolling Stone's contributing editor, Tim Dickerson has wriiten a well researched piece about John McCain titled "Make believe Maverick", "A closer look at the life and career of John McCain reveals a disturbing record of recklessness and dishonesty". Given the political climate of late this piece is a must read.

Here is an excerpt found at the end of the piece;

But perhaps the most revealing of McCain's flip-flops was his promise, made at the beginning of the year, that he would "raise the level of political dialogue in America." McCain pledged he would "treat my opponents with respect and demand that they treat me with respect." Instead, with Rove protégé Steve Schmidt at the helm, McCain has turned the campaign into a torrent of debasing negativity, misrepresenting Barack Obama's positions on everything from sex education for kindergarteners to middle-class taxes. In September, in one of his most blatant embraces of Rove-like tactics, McCain hired Tucker Eskew — one of Rove's campaign operatives who smeared the senator and his family during the 2000 campaign in South Carolina.

Throughout the campaign this year, McCain has tried to make the contest about honor and character. His own writing gives us the standard by which he should be judged. "Always telling the truth in a political campaign," he writes in Worth the Fighting For, "is a great test of character." He adds: "Patriotism that only serves and never risks one's self-interest isn't patriotism at all. It's selfishness. That's a lesson worth relearning from time to time." It's a lesson, it would appear, that the candidate himself could stand to relearn.

"I'm sure John McCain loves his country," says Richard Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar under Bush. "But loving your country and lying to the American people are apparently not inconsistent in his view."

Also watch this video , Tim Dickinson gaves a quick overview of the Top 5 myths about John McCain, amazing, absolutely amazing.

It came as no surprise today to read long-time naked shorting denier and hedge fund shill Joe Nocera's NY Times "woe is me" piece asking "so why didn't we know any better?" What a joker, that Nocera, (along with the editor who allows him to continually misinform and misdirect, especially as to the real causes and culprits of our financial meltdown.)

While those causes are in fact complex and diverse, they are all uniquely interrelated in origin. There should be no mistaking the fact that the tragedy that has engulfed the world didn't have to happen-- would never have happened had the Wall Street/DC banking power structure not captured control of the system and decided to institutionalize lying, cheating and stealing under the ruse of "more efficient markets."

It would also not have happened if the once proud free press had not thoroughly capitulated and allowed the truth, known and spoken by many, to be repeatedly scorned, derided and ignored by Nocera and his wolves in sheep's clothing cohorts.

Naked Shorts Frolic While Financial System Fries

October 10th, 2008 by Mark Mitchell

“Morgan Stanley shares have been under extraordinary pressure as of late, for no apparent fundamental reason, as we estimate liquidity, the balance sheet, and long-term earnings, prospects are sound.”

- Fox-Pitt analyst David Trone in a research note, today

Here we go again. A giant bank has some weaknesses, but it is, in all respects, a going concern — except that short sellers are peddling rumors and phantom stock, so the share price is plummeting. With the share price in peril, the rating agencies (perhaps over vigilant after taking so much criticism from short sellers and the media) put the bank’s debt ratings on review for a downgrade.

Meanwhile, short sellers corner the market for the bank’s credit default swaps, and point to the value of the CDS as evidence that the bank is doomed. They feed the media with analyses and bogus indexes that mark the bank’s assets to nothing. They spread the news that the bank’s counterparties and trading partners could bail.

The clients and partners stay with the bank. Up until now they have no reason not to.

But then, there’s more naked short selling, the hedge funds flooding the market with stock they do not possess – phantom stock. Maybe the hedge funds send a fax to CNBC with one last rumor. Over the course of a day or two, the stock price is slashed in half.

Then, suddenly, the stock is in the single digits.

As a result of the low stock price – not as result of the balance sheet – the bank’s partners and clients freak out. This time, they really do pull their money.

End of bank.

And if there are one or two more like this — end of story. The financial system will be fried.

We’ve seen precisely the same scenario with Bear Stearns, Lehman, Merrill Lynch, Washington Mutual, and IndyMac. A variant of this scenario took down AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and perhaps 200 other companies before them.

Morgan Stanley could be gone by next week.

We have new data for September that shows that there was plenty of short selling of Morgan Stanley (and other companies) even during the SEC’s ban on short selling, which ended Wednesday at midnight. Some hedge funds ignored the ban, and the SEC did nothing.

Worse, in place of the ban, the SEC has offered only tepid new rules (cheered by the short seller lobby) that do little to prevent the sale of phantom stock. Under these rules, short sellers do not have to borrow real stock before they sell it. They merely have to “locate” the stock. The SEC doesn’t say how it’s supposed to know whether a short seller has actually located real stock as opposed to telling his broker, “yeah, I located it, it’s in your mother’s wig” (which is pretty much how these conversations go).

Furthermore, the SEC gives hedge funds three days to deliver the stock they sell. This would be fine if they were required to possess real stock before selling. But since they are not, a hedge fund can offload a large block of phantom stock and let it eat away at the financial system for at least three days.

Sometimes, the hedge funds settle the trade with another block of phantom stock, transferred to them by a friendly broker. But even if they fail to deliver the stock, the SEC stipulates no serious penalties. Meanwhile, it shows no inclination to actually prosecute anyone for the jailable crime of short-side market manipulation.

I’m willing to bet anybody a sizeable amount of money that when the SEC releases its “failures to deliver” numbers for October, they will suggest unbridled illegal naked short selling of Morgan Stanley during this past week, even on days when the ban on all short selling was in place. The data will show that naked short selling rose to unprecedented levels just before somebody floated Wednesday’s false rumor that Morgan Stanley was going to lose its $9 billion deal with Mitsubishi.

And the data will show that after the ban was lifted, the law-breaking shorts went nuclear – with failures to deliver of well over a million shares every day. Ultimately, many millions of Morgan Stanley’s shares will be sold and never delivered, just as hedge funds have yet to deliver more than 10 million shares of Bear Stearns that they sold during that bank’s final days last March.

As I write this, Morgan’s stock price is in the single digits, trading around 7 bucks, down an astounding 70% in the 36 hours since the short selling ban was lifted. A death spiral like that does not happen naturally. Because of the short-battered stock price – and only the stock price (again, this has nothing to do with the balance sheet) — Moody’s today put Morgan’s long-term debt ratings on review for a downgrade.

I suspect another 15% off the stock price, and one more well-placed rumor, will do the trick. There will be a run on the bank. Morgan will be gone. And the global financial fire will blaze still hotter.

It is beyond surreal that our most prestigious financial media continue to allow this to happen. It is beyond comprehension that journalists – in possession of the evidence, and presumably in possession of their faculties – continue to spout the line, originally formulated by short-sellers and now woven into conventional wisdom – that this crisis is only about bad mortgages and bad managers and bad balance sheets.

One can argue that, in the long run, the world is better off without half of Wall Street – without its ponzi schemes and paper profits, the sickening salaries and arrogance. Certainly, anyone with a Shakespearean state of mind will appreciate the fates of Morgan Stanley, Lehman, and Bear – all of which eagerly pimped their dodgy prime brokerage services to the very short sellers who destroyed them.

But it does not require Shakespearean nuance to see that this crisis is not just about scandalous banks. It is about criminals destroying banks that are tawdry, yes, but possessing of some virtue, and capable, if left unmolested, of carrying on and contributing to society – perhaps even staving off a global calamity.

Moreover, these same criminals are destroying many other companies, most of which are run by honest people who labor far from the insalubrious alleyways of southern Manhattan. The SEC maintains a list of companies whose stock has failed to deliver in excessive quantities. As I explained in an earlier dispatch, many victims of naked short selling (including some of the big banks) do not appear on that list. But surely it is a scandal that more than 300 companies, many of them financial firms that have nothing to do with Wall Street, do appear on the list.

Surely, it is an even bigger scandal that around 100 of those companies have appeared on the list chronically, day after day, for months on end, and though the sheriff posts the names of these rape victims on its wall, it has yet to prosecute a single rapist. The SEC tells us that a billion shares remain undelivered on any given day — and yet it doesn’t bother to find out which hedge funds sold the phantom stock.

It might be too late, but if Washington and the financial media really want to save the world, they ought to start by demanding that hedge funds borrow real stock before they sell it. And what the heck: Maybe some newspaper could offer the radical suggestion that the SEC should tell hedge funds that they can either go to jail or close out all unsettled trades – today.

If one hedge fund manager were to get cuffed, all the others with outstanding “failures to deliver” might scramble to buy real stock so they can settle. The markets might soar. The innocent victims might get some relief. And the delinquents on Wall Street would get some time to clean up their acts.

Meanwhile, would anyone care to guess which company the naked short sellers will take down after Morgan Stanley?

And would anyone like to share a bunker with canned goods and weapons?

October 10th, 2008 by Patrick Byrne

In the adult novelty & video arcade shop that is our New York financial establishment, one of the mop-and-bucket spooge-boys is Roddy Boyd, formerly of the New York Post (for folks who move their lips when they read Entertainment Weekly), and currently, of Fortune Magazine (also known as “People Magazine for Capitalists”). I have met Roddy on occasion, and a more seedy and furtive character would be difficult to name. I once knew a one-eyed Chinese guy named “Chaney” who ran a Bangkok pawn shop/mail-drop who turned out to be working for Taiwanese, Chinese, and Soviet intelligence, simulatenously, but by appearances anyway, Chaney was a model of probity and fair-dealing when compared to Mr. Boyd.

Admittance into Roddy’s New York financial journalism spooge-bucket-brigade is conditional upon acceptance of The Fundamental Principle and First Corollary of that illustrious fraternity:

The Fundamental Principle - Hedge funds can do no wrong, particularly if they belong to a small constellation whose brightest lights are Stevie Cohen, Dan Loeb, David Einhorn, Jim Chanos, David Rocker & Marc Cohodes.

The First Corollary - If any corporation or individual appears to have been wronged by activities of any of these hedge funds, using methods up to and including stock counterfeiting and manipulation, blackmail and intimidation, use of private eyes and internal moles, inciting endless and expensive investigations that go nowhere, and so on and so forth, it must only be because they deserved it (for proof, see The Fundamental Principle).

Today Fortune Magazine’s Roddy Boyd gives fine illustration of these rules in an article on Copper River Partners (née Rocker Partners). This is the same Copper River/Rocker Partners whose exploits are chronicled throughout DeepCapture, and who have been frequent beneficiaries of reportorial lotion-jobs from Karen Richardson, Roddy Boyd, Herb Greenberg, and Jim Cramer, and have been long-time recipients of Bethany McLean’s highly-regarded regulars-only service. (Full disclosure: Copper River is also on the business end of a Marin County lawsuit filed by Overstock.com, in which I played modest role.)

In today’s think-piece, Roddy treats us to such insights as:

“But for noted short-sellers Copper River Management, a $1 billion hedge fund based in Larkspur, Cal., the month turned into a perfect storm. A devastating combination of counter-party failure, sudden regulatory edicts and margin calls conspired to turn the fund’s performance on its ear, leading to a 55% loss in just two weeks.” Translation: In the last two weeks Copper River lost over half of its billion dollars, not through any decisions made there: instead, counter-party failure, regulators, and those pesky margin calls “conspired” to create “a perfect storm” that lost the half-billion dollarts.

In case the point was lost that none of this had to do with the quality of Copper River’s investments, Roddy Boyd writes it out. He really does, in those words: “What’s worse for Copper River is that the battering had nothing to do with the quality of its investments.”

We are treated to a bit of financial arcana: “On top of that, as Lehman unwound its own internal hedges to the Copper River trades, its trading desks bought shares of these companies, driving up their prices and leading to losses for Copper River.” Translation: Lehman sold Copper River puts that Lehman then hedged by shorting stock, most likely in more flagrant abuse of the option market-maker exception, and when Lehman covered its shorts it hurt Copper River, whose investment strategy assumes an environment where shorts don’t have to cover (and understandably so). As far as Copper River and Roddy Boyd are concerned, the possibility that shorts would have to “cover” (that is, “at some point come into the possession of”) things they sell is a damn imposition.

As though that litany of impositions were not harrowing enough, Roddy chronicles the further injustices suffered by Copper River: “That was bad enough, but on September 19, the bottom fell out for the fund. That was when the Securities and Exchange Commission ordered unprecedented restrictions in short sales” (as our nation’s financial system was imploding). And further, “As prices in those stocks shot upwards, Copper River was forced to cover - or buy back - some of its positions at steep losses. “ Clearly this further injustice is intolerable: how could a hedge fund such as Copper River ever be expected to make money if it sells things expecting them to go down, and they go up? And lastly, “The rising stock prices also led to a series of margin calls (demands for additional cash collateral to be deposited in a margin account) from Goldman Sachs, Copper River’s prime broker.” I’m with Roddy on this one: it’s just damn inconsiderate of Goldman Sachs to insist that Copper River have funds to back its play.

Perhaps I am too hard on Roddy. “Out of the crooked timber of humanity no straight thing will ever be made”, and all that. A gal moves to the big city, gets behind, does things of which she is not proud. Molded are we all of imperfect clay.

But normally, she doesn’t write home about it.

It’s just Roddy’s ill fortune to have to do these things in national print.

CNBC Spectacle Precedes Naked Short Massacre

October 9th, 2008 by Mark Mitchell

So the SEC today lifted its ban on short-selling, and all but declared open season for law-breaking naked short sellers to start destroying companies again – and who does CNBC have on for two hours as its honored “guest host”?

None other than Jim Chanos, the salamander-slick director of the short-seller lobby.

Asked about naked short selling, Chanos said, with a straight face: “Anytime a hedge fund or short seller shorts a stock, it is a legitimate short. We have to get a locate or pre-borrow from the broker….”

Chanos continued: “The one thing I have in common with Patrick Byrne, chairman of Overstock.com [and Deep Capture reporter], is that we are calling for strict, strict delivery…in terms of delivering shares…that is how to end this naked short selling…”

CNBC, which serves as a sort of seedy massage parlor to the short selling community, gave Chanos the usual treatment – lubrications and sweet nothings. No tough questions. No retorts to his outlandish assertions. No wondering aloud as to his absurd and self-serving logic.

Let’s get this straight.

Not long ago, Chanos insisted that naked short selling did not occur.

Now, he says naked short selling occurs. But it’s not short sellers who are naked short selling. Short sellers make sure their brokers borrow real stock before they sell it.

In any case, Chanos acknowledges that short sellers’ brokers are not borrowing real stock before they sell it. That is why they are not delivering the stock. And that is why he claims to agree with Patrick Byrne that there needs to be “strict, strict delivery.”

But Chanos is against a ban on naked short selling (which would force short sellers to borrow real stock, thus ensuring delivery). Chanos says that a ban on naked short selling would destroy “market efficiency.”

So, to summarize the Chanos position: Naked short selling didn’t occur, but now it occurs, except short sellers don’t do it, and the SEC shouldn’t ban it because the market would cease to function properly if short sellers were forced to stop doing what they don’t do.

And given that so many shares are failing to deliver (after being sold naked by short sellers who never sell naked), Chanos is calling for “strict, strict delivery” of stock (while praising the SEC for its “strict” new rules which stipulate that nothing happens to short sellers who fail to deliver stock).

CNBC treated us this morning to two hours of Chanos nonsense. At one point this charlatan even insisted that short sellers aren’t short selling financial stocks at all. Really, he said short sellers aren’t short selling. Period. Take his word for it. CNBC did.

That was around 7:30 AM, right after CNBC’s Becky Quick referred to Chanos as “the legendary short seller….er, investor.”

At 9:30 AM, the markets opened and the criminal naked short sellers…er, investors…went back to work, unfettered by the SEC’s “strict” new rules.

Within an hour, Morgan Stanley was down 25%.

October 8th, 2008 by Mark Mitchell

In a few hours, the SEC will lift its ban on short-selling of 900 stocks. That is well and good, except that it appears that hedge funds will also be permitted to resume abusive naked short selling – offloading stock that they do not possess in order to dilute supply and drive down prices.

Given that naked short selling precipitated the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which triggered global panic, it seems fair to say that the resumption of naked short selling could precipitate the collapse of another big bank, which will fuel still more panic, and then we will really be screwed.

Say what you will about Lehman’s balance sheet, that company was not going out of business until its stock price hit rock bottom, making it impossible to raise capital, and triggering a run on the bank. The stock price hit rock bottom because it was bombarded by naked short selling and false rumors.

Some financial media have been cheering the imminent lifting of the short-selling ban. According to these journalists, the ban did not prevent the stock market turmoil of the last couple weeks. Therefore, lifting the ban should not make things worse and short-selling is good for the markets and blah blah blah.

The media never cease to astound on this issue. The fact that markets have been bad does not mean they wouldn’t have been a whole lot worse without the ban. And if short-selling is good for markets, this is fully besides the point. The point is that naked short selling is most definitely not good for the markets, and, as of tomorrow, that very not-good-for-the-markets activity is going to be allowed to resume with the full acquiescence of the SEC and the financial media.

Look, on September 16, Morgan Stanley was trading around $26. On September 17, it hit a low of $11. The stock was slashed in half in less than a day. That tends to happen when a company is under a full-scale attack by naked short sellers.

On the day after Morgan Stanley was slashed in half, the SEC banned short selling. It is fair to say that if the SEC had not acted, Morgan Stanley would not be with us today.

After the SEC banned short selling, hedge funds stopped circulating false rumors about the companies they had been attacking. Today, in anticipation of the short selling ban coming to an end, hedge funds began circulating false rumors about Morgan Stanley – the most damaging being that Mitsubishi had pulled out of an agreement to inject $9 billion of capital into the bank.

What happens tomorrow when those rumor-mongering hedge funds resume naked short selling?

As one prominent economist said, forebodingly, “We will see.”

NYT’s Nocera Digs Deep Into Naked Short Selling Scandal

October 7th, 2008 by Mark Mitchell

In testimony before Congress yesterday, Richard Fuld, the former CEO of Lehman Brothers, said that (criminal) naked short selling precipitated the demise of Bear Stearns and Lehman, and nearly toppled Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Given that not only Fuld, but also the CEOs of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and a good number of traders on Wall Street – along with John McCain, Hillary Clinton, the Chairman of the SEC, the Secretary of the Treasury, and countless others in Washington — have all now implicated naked short selling in the hobbling of the American financial system, you would think that the mainstream media could produce just one investigative report – just one story taking a serious look at this criminal activity and its recent effect on our markets.

Instead, we get the usual platitudes from the likes of Joe Nocera at The New York Times. He writes:

“Mr. Fuld, in typical C.E.O. fashion, claimed to take ‘full responsibility’ for his actions — but spent the entire time blaming others for Lehman’s downfall. Early in his testimony, he even blamed [emphasis mine] ‘naked short-sellers’ who passed along “false rumors” that started a run on his bank.”

By Nocera’s standards of anti-investigative journalism, a serious issue is settled not with data or evidence, but with one word – “even.” Could naked short selling have triggered the bank run that has Chernobyled our financial system? Can’t be, writes Nocera, because Lehman’s CEO “even” said it can be.

Nocera continues: “As both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal pointed out in lengthy stories on Monday, Mr. Fuld had assets on his books that were wildly overvalued.”

So, apparently, Lehman could not have been a victim.

A woman who once shoplifted is raped in an alley. Was she raped? No, because she was a shoplifter and she “even blamed” the rapist.

Keep in mind that Nocera once encouraged an assembly of his media colleagues not to investigate naked short selling. “Life’s too short,” he told a panel audience at the annual conference of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. “I don’t want to do it.”

Well, somebody should do it – and fast – because the SEC is going to lift its ban on short selling tomorrow, and there are no signs that it’s going to force hedge funds to borrow real shares before selling them.

So it will once again be open season for naked short selling – and market destruction. Countless more companies will fall prey to an easily preventable crime. And more CEOs will “even” point fingers at the criminals while Joe Nocera and the Media Mob stand idly by.

* * * * * * * *

If any journalists are interested, here is Fuld’s testimony:

“The second issue I want to discuss is naked short selling, which I believe contributed to both the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. Short selling by itself can be employed as a legitimate hedge against risk. Naked short selling, on the other hand, is an invitation to market manipulation. Naked short selling is the practice of selling shares short without first borrowing or arranging to borrow those shares in time to make delivery to the buyer within the settlement period – in essence, selling something you do not own and might not ultimately deliver to the buyer.

Naked short selling, followed by false rumors, dealt a critical, if not fatal blow to Bear Stearns. Many knowledgeable participants in our financial markets are convinced that naked short sellers spread rumors and false information regarding the liquidity of Bear Stearns, and simultaneously pulled business or encouraged others to pull business from Bear Stearns, creating an atmosphere of fear which then led to a self-fulfilling prophecy of a run on the bank. The naked shorts and rumor mongers succeeded in bringing down Bear Stearns. And I believe that unsubstantiated rumors in the marketplace caused significant harm to Lehman Brothers. In our case, false rumors were so rampant for so long that major institutions issued public statements denying the rumors.

Following the Bear Stearns run on the bank, we and many others called on regulators to immediately clamp down on naked short selling. The SEC issued a temporary order that went into effect on July 21 prohibiting “naked” short selling of certain financial firms, including Lehman, Merrill Lynch, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This measure stabilized the share prices of Lehman Brothers and the other firms. However, this restriction was temporary, and on August 13 it expired after 17 trading days. History has already shown how wrong and ill-advised it is to allow naked short selling.

Many of the firms that have recently collapsed or have been forced into emergency mergers, takeovers, or government bailouts – Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG – did so during the gaps of time in which there was no meaningful regulation of naked short selling. On September 15, when the market opened after the collapse of Lehman, naked shorts appeared to turn their attention to Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. In the three days between the announcement of Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy and the SEC instituting an emergency ban on short selling,

Goldman Sachs’ and Morgan Stanley’s share prices fell 30% and 39% respectively.

None of this was a coincidence.

After seeing this stock price reaction in the week following Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy, the SEC, like the Federal Reserve, took immediate action to stabilize the system. On September 18, following the decision of the Financial Services Authority in the United Kingdom a day earlier, the SEC instituted an emergency ban and other restrictions on short selling financial institutions. In taking these steps, Chairman Cox explained: “Given the importance of confidence in our financial markets as a whole, we have become concerned about the sudden and unexplained declines in the prices of securities. Such price declines can give rise to questions about the underlying financial condition of an issuer, which in turn can create a crisis of confidence without a fundamental underlying basis. The crisis of confidence can impair the liquidity and ultimate viability of an issuer, with potentially broad market consequences.” These new restrictions are set to expire no later than October 17. Permanent regulation of naked short selling is needed to prevent a similar demise for the firms that survived with the government’s help.”

There are so many bad things happening that it is hard to keep track. Here are two of the worst:

1) Lehman's debt sold at auction on Friday for below 9 cents on the dollar; meaning the owners of the CDS contracts that insure these securities will have to pay more that 91 cents on the dollar to fulfill their commitment. There is speculation that the figure to do so might run as high as $400 billion. Somebody owes a lot of money that they probably don't have. (This defines the credit crunch in a nutshell.)

2) In a related story, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs both appear to be on the ropes. From CNBC:

“I don't wish to spread alarm on the line people but the big issue confronting the market is I'm afraid the health and sustainability of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs" Hugh Hendry, Partner and CIO at Eclectica, told CNBC early Friday. "It is unimaginable that they can be allowed to go, I suspect that they will be nationalized at some point today or over the weekend," he add.

Not much else to say, is there?

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange>

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange>
students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab the Professor
noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and
stretching as if his back hurt.
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told
him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting
communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his
country's government and install a communist government.
In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange
question.
He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The
young man said this was no joke.
'You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and
putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat
the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place
where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to
eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence.. They get used
to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the

fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs that are used to the free corn start to come through the gate to eat, and then you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.
Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening
to America. The government keeps pushing us toward socialism and keeps
spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income,
tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc, etc, etc. While we continue to lose our freedoms just a little at a time.
One should always remember: There is no such thing as a free lunch! Also, a
politician will never provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.
So, if you see that all of this wonderful government 'help' is a problem
confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to spread
this message on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of
life then you will probably disregard this message. In this 'very important' election year, listen closely to what the candidates are promising you – just maybe, you will be able to tell who is about to
slam the gate on America. This is just as valid with our upcoming
elections in Canada.
'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to
take away everything you have.'
Thomas Jefferson

I was interviewed today, by the Pakistani Spectator, who has dedicated a section of their blog to up and coming political bloggers. Read it at your leisure : )

The Pakistani Spectator, for those of you who are curious, is a moderate blog which hails, as it's name suggests, from Pakistan. They blog both in English and in Urdu about a variety of different situations that can range from political to entertaining. The Pakistani Spectator, which calls itself "a candid blog" is interested in initiating dialogue with people all over the world about Pakistan, for Pakistan. Men and women with a wide range of opinions on Middle Eastern politics speak their mind on this blog, saying what they feel is true- without spin, without pretensions. These sensible bloggers take on tough issues, such as terrorism within Pakistan, the war, civil rights, and more.

I highly recommend it for any and every American, as these people are the voice of Pakistan- a people who want to work in concert with the US, and the rest of the world, not a nation or a people that we should consider attacking, as Obama has suggested.

Thanks to all of the writers at TPS for having such a fantastic publication!

After responding to a gentleman's blog that attempts to say somehow that the report vindicates Mrs. Palin, I realized I should post on this -- heck it's likely he won't let my response pass through moderation. That's seems to be a habit of quite a few bloggers on Wordpress.

Folks, don't try to look for hidden meaning in the words. Don't stand behind an official determination that nothing illegal was done. Don't spout that the governor has the right to fire staff members.

Plain and simple: Sarah Palin abused her power as governor when she attempted to influence a member of her staff for personal reasons. Whether that was illegal or not isn't the issue; it was wrong.

If you were teaching an ethics class, you would not hesitate to brand such behavior as official misconduct. If you were painting a picture of an ideal national leader, you would not even consider such a person.

Perhaps the report and investigation were politically motivated. So what? If you plan to be on the political stage, you'd better be prepared to explain and justify as proper your actions, past and present. You signed up for that inspection by choosing to enter politics.

And frankly, I think Alaskans and Americans have a right to expect conduct from their leaders that is above reproach -- not merely legal.

By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers

Excerpted from the article:

“To how utterly chilling this new US law for the American people, titled the “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008”, Russian legal experts point out in these reports that:

“Section 101 (a)(1) establishes what is termed the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) to which substantial portions of what the American people currently owe to their banks and financial institutions is to be turned over the US Government for redistribution to foreign banks.

Section 101(c)(3) Designates for the first time in American history these foreign banks as financial agents of Federal Government with full law enforcement authority over the citizens in the US.

Section 3 (b) allows the US Secretary of the Treasury to put any kind of debt, including credit card, home loans, personal loans, automobile loans, etc., into the TARP programme.

Section 112 allows the US Secretary of the Treasury to astoundingly extend financing to foreign banks to purchase the debt of the American people.

Section 112 (1)(a) allows the US Government to hold stocks in companies for the first time in their history and which completely destroys the capitalist economy of their Nation.

Section 119 (2)(a) gives the US Secretary of the Treasury dictatorial powers not reviewable by courts making this position the most powerful one in America.

Section 122 increases the US public debt to the incredible amount of $11,315,000,000,000 (Trillion)

Section 204 puts the United States under emergency economic rule and states, "all provisions of this Act are designated as an emergency requirement and necessary to meet emergency needs”.

But, these reports warn, the two most chilling measures put into this new law are titled “Section 511 "Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008” and “TITLE II-SPECIAL PROJECTS ON FEDERAL LAND Section 201”.

The new mental health provisions contained in these new laws allows the United States to label dissident citizens as being ‘mentally ill’, and the ‘Special Projects’ section allows for the reimbursement to US cities and counties for the building of concentration camps for these mentally ill dissidents. (red print and emphasis, mine)

The fear of the United States Government against their dissidents is becoming more evident as many of them are beginning to sound the alarm of events to come, and as we can see evidenced by one such report from the SteveQuale.Com website:”

Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
I just ran across a fascinating artic

Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

I just ran across a fascinating article over at americanthinker.com. If you've never visited, you'd be wise to. What you'll find is meticulously researched editorials by extremely smart people who actually back up their words with facts. I've been frustrated lately with the fact that Obama--with all his socialist rhetoric and all his socialist friends--seems to want to end America's great success story by re-creating it according to Communistic principles. If you only listen closely to the words he says, his intentions become readily apparent. Notice how often he incites class warfare, talks about "workers," and uses the word "system" when talking about government. Actually, when Obama says government, I see him saying it with a capital G. Government, under an Obama presidency, would be the new god, make no mistake.

Back to the article I just read: It was written by Paul Kengor, a professor whose specialty is the Cold War and Communism. He teaches at Grove City College and lectures all over the country, and has written several books on the subject as well. He flatly states that in researching for his latest book about the Cold War, he (ironically) came across Marxist characters who mentored and allied with...Barack Obama.

We cannot expect to hear much about this from the media. And the painful truth, according to Kengor, is that many Americans---especially those in the 20-35 age range who seem to have a particular liking for Obama--are simply ignorant of history, and of the horrifying nature of Communism. We have simply been failed by educators, especially those at the college level, who ignore it.

Kengor writes:

"Of all the lectures that I do around the country, none seem to rivet the audience as much as my discourse on the horrors of communism. In these lectures, which are usually connected to my books on Ronald Reagan, I do a 10-15 minute backgrounder on the crimes of communists-from their militant attacks on private property, on members of all religious faiths, and on basic civil liberties, to their total death toll of over 100 million bloodied, emaciated corpses in the 20th century."

Students are fascinated, appalled, and want to know more. Contrast this with the reactions of other professors in the audience:

"As the young people in my audience are fully engaged, hands in the air with question after question -- obviously hearing all of these things for the first time in their lives, from K-12 to college, as they are eager to inform me after my talk -- the professors often stare at me with contempt. In one case, a British professor, who could not stop sighing, squirming, and rolling her eyes as I quoted the most heinous assessments of religion by Marx and Lenin, got up and stormed out of the room.

These professors glare at me as if the ghost of Joe McCarthy has flown into the room and leapt inside of my body. In fact, that's the essence of their criticism: It is not so much that these professors approve of communism as much as they disapprove of -- actually, utterly despise -- anti-communism. They are anti-anti-communist more so than pro-communist."

Read more of Kengor's analysis (my emphasis):

"The leftist intelligentsia that dominates higher education, and which writes the civics texts used in high schools -- I've read and studied these texts -- and which trains the teachers who teach in high schools, is not in the slightest bit notably anti-communist. These liberals do not teach the lessons of communism.

What's more, aside from failing to instruct their students in the crass facts about communism's unprecedented destruction -- its purges, mass famines, show trials, killing fields, concentration camps -- these educators are negligent in failing to teach the essential, non-emotional, but crucial Econ 101 basics that contrast capitalism and communism and, thus, that get at the heart of how and why command economies simply do not work. Each semester in my Comparative Politics course at Grove City College, it takes no more than 50 minutes to matter-of-factly lay out the rudimentary differences. Whereas capitalist systems are based on the market forces of supply and demand, which dictate prices and production levels and targets, communist systems are based on central planning, by which a government bureau attempts to manage such things. Capitalism is based on private ownership; communism on public ownership. Capitalism thrives on small government and taxes; communism on large government and taxes, typically progressive income-tax rates and estate taxes -- both advocated explicitly by Marx -- and much more.

This stuff isn't rocket science. It is easy to teach, if the professor desires. The problem is that it isn't being taught. Consequently, Americans today do not know why communism is such a devastating ideology, at both the level of plain economic theory and in actual historical practice. It is a remarkably hateful system, based on literal hatred and targeted annihilation of entire classes and groups of people. (Nazism sought genocide based on ethnicity; communism sought genocide based on class.)"

I highly recomment reading the full piece: http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/10/why_obamas_communist_connectio.html

People talk about the supposed "rage" being shown at McCain rallies. If you ignore the negative media portrayal, and listen to the words that these enraged people are saying, it's rage at the increasingly socialist bent of this country. These people--including myself--are enraged because we are seeing the great success story of America being flushed down the toilet; we're hearing nothing but class-warfare rhetoric and socialist-speak from Obama; we're watching Washington nationalize lending institutions and banks. We're watching the America that our founding fathers envisioned eroded to the point of complete destruction. And we're surrounded by nincompoops---who either haven't learned from history or who haven't been taught it---blindly singing the praises of a man who essentially got into politics to trample on the great vision of our founders and turn us all into "good little workers." THAT is why we're angry.

Kengor:

"What does it all mean for November 2008? It means that millions of modern Americans, when they hear that Barack Obama has deep roots with communist radicals like Bill Ayers and Frank Marshall Davis, don't care; they don't get it. Moreover, the leftist establishment -- from academia to media to Hollywood -- will not help them get it. To the contrary, the left responds to these accusations by not only downplaying or dismissing them but by ridiculing or even vilifying them, given the left's reflexive anti-anti-communism. The left will create bad guys out of the anti-communists who are legitimately blowing the whistle on the real bad guys.

Moderates especially need to be informed that Barack Obama is not your typical liberal: he is the most hard-left Democrat that his party has ever nominated for the presidency. It is absolutely not a coincidence that the man with these far-left associations just so happens to be ranked -- quantifiably, objectively, by non-partisan, respected sources like National Journal -- the most far-left member of the U.S. Senate, which is no small thing given the leftward drift of the modern Democratic Party. In other words, Obama's extremist associations matter; they are fully revealing, illustrative of the political-ideological realities that the pro-Obama media will not expose. His voting record bears this out."

Should we have bailed out the few who don’t deserve it which will only help those same people?

Should we have bailed out the few who don’t deserve it which will only help those same people? Or, should we have bailed out the many; the people who drive the economy helping everyone from one end to the other? Neither scenario is realistic, which may be why so many of us find ourselves stunned by the unconscionable lack of judgment in congress.

Do you wonder what might have happened if our congress had acted in our best interest rather than that of Wall Street? What if that 850 billion they are borrowing, which is likely to balloon to trillions was instead equally distributed among all legal households in the US?

Most mortgages could have been paid off even those which are fraudulently inflated.

Every credit card in the country could have been paid off except those held by the upper 3% which have no limits.

Every car loan could have been paid and new vehicles purchased.

Every school loan could have been paid and education paid for in cash.

Nearly every medical bill could have been paid.

Social programs based on income would be virtually non-existent.

New businesses hiring new employees could be started.

Existing small businesses could have been expanded and a new manufacturing base could have been started here at home.

If congress and this president were so eager to stabilize the economy and believed they could borrow us out of debt…..why didn’t they spend it where it would have mattered? Why didn’t they spend that money in a way that would have caused an immediate expansion of our economic base and benefited millions instead of just a few?

Here’s why: In every situation listed above, it would have meant smaller government, less taxes, less unemployment, and expansion of the business base and less government intervention and intrusion into our lives.

We have been duped into thinking that for some reason we should be using credit and that this artificial number used to define us by credit reporting agencies is in some way significant. It isn’t. And the reason I know it isn’t is that our government is in the process of delivering a few trillion dollars to agencies and institutions whose credit ratings have to be in the toilet. Your credit rating is simply a number generated by the same people who ran their businesses into the ground. Do as our government did and just disregard it.

What we have witnessed in the last two weeks is the greatest redistribution of wealth…redistributed to those already obscenely wealthy… ever witnessed at one time in our history. The corporation operating as the UNITED STATES government just came out of the closet and established itself not as a constitutional government of the people, but rather, as the corporate entity as it has been since 1871.

It is only going to go downhill from here.

Oh, just some browsing through the net and as for the recent F1 race in Singapore, everything went on fine except for the the Singtel Grid girls. They received tons of criticisms regarding their looks. Tons of harsh, crude, and cynical remarks were thrown at them just because... they look like your great-grandmother trying to put some make up on. Words like "aunty", "ugly", "saggy", and more were also included within the list. Now you tell me, why are Singaporeans so cynical? Is this the best we can do by simply being a worshipper of foreign gods except for own minions? I just don't understand. Perhaps we're a young country - young and dumb. And that it will take us about 500 more years for a certain culture to take its root in Singapore. In fact, Singapore is a light-year far from being civilised or cultured... may I be ashamed to say so. I think there are many things we can do to make this country a better place for all yet-to-be-proud citizens, but not without the support of its own, and I mean OWN people.

I do not think that Singaporean girls are ugly. In my opinion, I think quite a lot of them on the streets are pretty. Many of them are gorgeous. Some are hot. And some are above average, but still looking good. It is this media craze about perfectionism, that got all of us Singaporeans so cynical about our shape, our sizes, our dressing, and even the way we talk. The media is one hell of a place for depressed people, I must say, because nothing you do is going to be good or satisfactory. This is especially so when there are pageants or competitions, which require the participants to be women. And women in Singapore are facing quite a lot of pressure from local men and perhaps their own kind... just because of how they look. I noticed that everytime there is a competition involving women, criticisms from all around the island were flying through the cables of every Internet in every household. Not just that, every mouth condemns the looks of these brave ladies who took part in their own pursuit of their interest or dreams.

I admit that there are rooms for improvement, but I don't think that strong criticisms would work to bring in the talents. We, as a young nation, do not need to use strong or striden criticisms to improve our local talents. This will inevitably drive more talents away from our shores. Instead, we need to give support to those who are brave enough to face the harshness of some of you cynical people out there, who have nothing better to do than to hurl insults on others who dream of their own success.

Talking about being a gracious country. It is all "talk" and never the "walk". Singapore is not the land of opportunity for Singaporeans, other than mainly for the Bangalas, PRCs, Expats, and others (some of them would perhaps spit on our shoes once they've returned home to feed their family... they might be thinking, "Why the hell do I care about Singapore? It's the place where I could earn my cash and be a 'millionairre' back home!"). This is because of how cynical all of us are, especially to our very own people - those born in Singapore. Without support, Singapore will not have plenty of opportunities as expected by the masses and Singapore will not be united. Never is, never will, and never would be.

In talking with many about the upcoming presidential election, I have found that most don’t r

In talking with many about the upcoming presidential election, I have found that most don't really have a system to make such decisions. I like to ask folks what issues are the important to them and what their candidate has done in the past that makes them feel they are the best candidate (the best indication of future performance is past performance). I don't think many look at the "how to select a candidate" piece but simply let emotion, charisma, single issues or the "What are they gonna do for me" principle govern their decisions. For example, construction workers vote for the president they think best understands construction workers (e.g. pro union), Venture capitalists vote for the president they think best serves venture capital (e.g. low taxes), and those that receive from government programs vote for those vowing to maintain or increase such programs regardless of overall social contribution. This is how we have been voting since G. H. W. Bush. But how can it make sense for everyone to vote solely on what suits themselves best? It’s not a United States of Me. Sure self interest is a major consideration in a vote, but it has to be weighed against others.

We are easily distracted away from better presidential measures: namely performance, or our estimation of potential for performance. Some new tools (my favorite was this one by american public media) are availible that can quickly help one size up the candidate by the issues in stead of trying to wade through the rhetoric or media slant. What does the media do to help us? Not much. When listening to anything political in nature (campaign adds, news coverage / commentary, people talking, etc.) one should ask: What does this have to do with their ability to do the job? Pundits have failed to help viewers evaluate the merits of the candidates. They are supposed to help us dissect the hidden meaning, a vague promise, or a mistake of fact.

I have seen a number of studies that indicate what some feel are the most important qualities of a president. They usually center around being articulate, organizational capacity, political skill, and style. However, I feel that the most important characteristic is vision and how that vision is shaped. That vision should be shaped by the founding documents (constitution, bill of rights and amendments). After a closer look at what our founding fathers wrote, it appears that we have strayed from the path over the last 15 - 20 years. The most significant shifts have been away from individual accountability and toward redistribution of wealth. We are seeing the latest effects of this in the world markets. Bailing these white collar crooks out is the worst thing we could do, teaching the irresponsible borrowers, lenders, and those legislators that originally pushed the misguided ideas of risky loans that they do not have to be accountable for their decisions. Both of the candidates support massive government intervention because it appeals to the "what are they going to do for me" majority. As the number of folks contributing to the treasury dwindle and those taking from it increase, that small percentage paying the majority of the taxes that congress is to eager to spend will give up on our current system. I believe the vision of the founding fathers was that the individual impact of the federal government should be minimal and the local governments would be used to tailor local law that met the needs of those living locally. Yet today we live in a system where two federal candidates spend over a Billion dollars running campaigns over a two year period to get elected. There has got to be a better way. It's time to reflect and respond.

Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. John F. Kennedy

Peace through strength. Ronald Reagan

I told you I'd get round to writing this up... here it is!

Just over a week ago I took part in a series of workshops, discussions and deliberations at the University of Edmonton in the province of Alberta, Canada. I was one of a handful of 'deliberation/participation people' who were there to have input into how the diverse group of Albertans present might best set up a successful, province-wide deliberative process on climate change issues.

[caption id="attachment_272" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Edmonton, Alberta, Canada"][/caption]

The event was participated in by an impressively varied group of individuals - representing a significant range of viewpoints including; energy industry representatives, radical environmentalists, political activists and government officials. The thing that all parties had in common was a genuine, and strong desire to move forward on the issue of climate change in Alberta. (They even gave up their weekend and worked 12hour days for free to be part of the deliberation - so I can testify to their commitment!)

So, what were we actually doing?

We wanted to put together a basis for how a public discussion on climate change in Alberta might best work - and help to move forward from polarised debate on climate change into more useful dialogue and action across the province.

Alberta is a focal point for climate change discussion as the Canadian economy has greatly benefited from the energy industry located there, including the booming Athabascan oil sands near Fort McMurray. This industry has been strongly criticised by environmental campaigners and scientists for its impact on the environment. Alberta embodies many of the environmental and economic debates taking place globally.

A key part of how myself and others present felt that progress could be made on these tough issues was through using deliberative techniques to bring people together in a more constructive and positive way than through debate and conflict.

How did you go about it?

Two main groups were involved in the design process over about four days:

One was a smaller group of around 15 and consisted both of Albertans and of visitors interested in assisting with the deliberation and public participation aspects. This group was present throughout the entirety of the process every day.

The second group was a larger group of around 50 Albertans who were present at key points in the design process to act as a 'sounding board' for the ideas that the smaller group had been discussing and formulating together during the day.

This format worked well in that ownership of the process and its aims began to be built from the outset amongst a very varied group of individuals, and the rapid response and interaction between the smaller and larger group helped to refine ideas very quickly over a short period of time.

By the end of the five days we worked together to uncover the bare bones of a process that could work for Albertans, wandered across a suprising amount of common ground and found several leverage points for instigating action. As we walked out of the room on the final day, an interim steering group had been set in place and action points had been established for moving forward... so watch this space.

The experience made me feel very positive about what can be acheived through using more deliberative approach to difficult issues like action on climate change - not a form of consensus building, but rather a way of better understanding one another and identifying areas for beneficial progress.
