Another few days in London and having also to include a trip to Gatwick I was looking for something convenient but good value. I though that Holiday In Express and more than £150 a bit on the expensive side - particularly as they don't seem to be much different to their non London siblings so I looked round. Accor hotels couldn't really offer me anything to match so I looked at the Premier Inn website and the London County Hall looked like reasonable value (little in London can be classed as good value!).

First impressions weren't brilliant - a trainee at check in and would you believe another failed key card! This seems to be the story of my hotel life. The room seems OK however I still definitely object to paying for wireless internet. I have just received a call from reception asking if the room is OK and I couldn't face raising the internet fees with them but will add to the customer feedback when I leave.

My 3 broadband card is delivering 1 bar - slow slow slow - (never managed more that 3 out of 10. This deserves a separate category. I'm just glad I didn't go for a high traffic monthly contract as I would never manage to get anywhere near the usage. I wonder what the other networks are like?

This weekend I was watching tbs, and they have a cute feature on with some of the movies, called movie and makeover. This weekend the makeover segments were showing how to achieve the hotel look at home. Unbeknownst to me, W Hotels has a boutique store that sells some of the beautiful items they have in their hotels.

I am always searching for calming, comfortable and chic bedding. The W Times Square Starlight bedding seems fit the bill perfectly.

W also features the Piso Vase, which are quirky, modern vases with a hint of color at the mouth and a slight bend.

I am not a big candle fan, usually the smells either are too overpowering to burn for very long or they make my allergies act up. However, I do like the look of these Joya Luscious Mini Votives offered in the W Store. The fun packaging makes me wish I could smell the candles, but they would make a beautiful display piece on their own.

LEED is the USGBC's rating system for designing and constructing the world's greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.

The owners of the hotel believe that the costs to build green are minor, do not compromise the guest experience, provide a substantial financial return, and last but not least help the environment.

Hotels caught breaking environmental regulations

HA NOI — Managers from the Ha Noi Sofitel Plaza Hotel and the Daewoo Hotel on Thursday admitted violating environmental regulations.

The Ha Noi Sofitel Plaza admitted failing to get permission before releasing untreated waste water into city sewers, said the municipal interdisciplinary inspectors under the chair of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The hotel installed a waste treatment facility using Australian technology in 1998 but the system has not been effectively used. Hotel management had paid little attention to maintenance of the system, said inspectors. The hotel was found not to have a sterilising and deodorising facility. The hotel uses approximately 500 cubic meters of water per day.

Hotel management will be fined, in line with current regulations, and must set up a revised environmental protection plan, as well as apply for a licence to discharge waste water before December.

The Daewoo hotel also failed to submit legal documents proving their adoption of regulations on environmental protection and water resources.

Inspectors also checked waste water treatment at the National Hospital of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases in Ha Noi and found that the hospital’s waste water treatment system was not being used effectively. Although it is operating, waste water was found to be redirected from the system, rendering it useless. —

Hof Gorei Resort Davao

So around March this year Aissa and went to Samal and stayed at the Hof Gorei resort. The usual Samal place to stay is Pearl Farm, but since Pearl Fam was a bit ouside our budget and we're always interested in trying lesser known places, we opted for Hof Gorei. Their staff was very quick to answer our email questions, and since their packages included transfers to and from the airport, we figured it was a good deal, and it really was.

First off, their service was excellent. You know how I know their service was excellent? We were supposed to be accompanied by one of their employees on the way home, a man who we shall call Rico. Rico wasn't there when we arrived at the port, so we walked towards the road to haila cab for the airport. A week later, Aissa and I received an email from the owner of Hof Gorei apologizing profusely for our not having an escort on the way back to the airport. Apparently Rico had gotten himself hit by a car while on the way to meet us, and was rushed to the hospital.

Take a moment to let that sink in. The owner was apologizing for not having serviced us because her employee had been hit by a car. It wasn't that she didn't value her employees, in fact she told us that she insisted he stay in the hospital and recuperate despite his wanting to get back to work. It just shows how dedicated they are to making sure their guests are taken care of. She even sent Aissa a pretty Sarong to apologize for something that really was not her fault in any way. That's how much they care about their guests. The food was excellent as well, and the accomodations very good value for money. They even have a mini zoo that features exotic flora and fauna, which I suggested to the owner should have signs so that guests would know what they're looking at.

However, there's a catch, and it may be a bit of a deal breaker for some: The beach is a bit rocky. As in you have to put sandals on if you want frolick in the beach. This was a bit disappointing to us but we learned to live with it, and they also have a pool that you can take advantage of if the beach isn't your thing. I emailed the owner about it and she said that they would try their best to remove the larger rocks from the beach.

So there you have it, excellent value and service, but a subpar beach. I believe they also do diving expeditions so if that's your kind of thing you can consider them as well. A friend emailed me asking for advice for an upcoming trip to Kerala. Responding to her brought back so many memories of an amazing month there and it's funny what immediately came back to mind and what I had to battle to remember.

One of the definite highlights was staying at the Villa Jacaranda in Varkala. The villa is just a short walk to dramatic cliffs that overlook the Arabian Sea.

The hotel is undeniably romantic. There are four rooms, one with an incredible roof terrace the others with private verandas, and each boasting the kind of detail that will make you want to return again and again. At sunset garlands of fresh, fragrant jasmine are draped on your private veranda; sheets are hand embroidered with pretty designs; and breakfast is served in privacy either in your room or on your private terrace.

The villa's garden is painstakingly cared for: exotic trees scent the air and their flowers blow across into the small lily pond.

Ayurvedic massage can be arranged by experienced practitioners at a cost of about 500 rupees (US$10/£6) for an hour.

This place is a delight. Don't miss out if you're heading to Kerala on your travels.

Bikaner is a desert city in the northwest of the state of Rajasthan in western India. Bikaner state was founded in the 15th century and persists until shortly after India's Independence in 1947. If you haven't already used TripAdvisor you need to check it out. I've used it several times already to find hotels in both Miami, Florida and Cusco, Peru and have not been dissapointed in believing the reviews. The reviews are done by regular people who stay in the hotels, eat at the restaurants, and visit the sites. This gives the reviews a down-to-earth feel that people can relate to. I chose two places to stay based on the fact that they were #1 for each city and both times I found the reviews to stand true.

I look at travel magazines and websites a lot. Everyone is always recommending a different place to stay so it can get difficult to choose. Travelocity helps out and makes it a little easier to find a place to stay. Check it out next time you are looking for a hotel.

Karpata, Bonaire (continued)

I didin't have enough time and space to finish the last article. So I will continued with Karpata on this post.. Let us begin again with some pictures.

These pictures shows what is inside the defined spaces of karpata. Pictures above showed that there were several lodging areas, and bathroom as well as kitchen. So it could have either been a little resort town or a hospital as my friend said. I do not know, but before I leave the island i will probably go to the governor's office and get a sure answer to fix this post. Much of the architecture still remain and hasn't been destroyed by nature yet. Which is quite amazing. It does need some gardening though. The place is pretty much a ghost town at night. But during the day, you can find groups of divers coming in front of it to dive at the reservation spots. I enjoyed my visit to this place and fond the ruin to be quite interesting. During the time of my visit, my battery ran out on my camera, so I couldn't take as much pictures as I wanted to.

Christmas Markets in Europe

Christmas is just around the corner and what better excuse to plan a trip and buy those unique gifts for the ones you love in your life. This year, why not skip the mad dash to the mall and, instead, combine a little retail therapy with a European vacation? If you're thinking a trip to Europe's enchanting Christmas Markets will blow your budget, we've got good news for you. There are more European charter flights than ever before from your local Canadian airport to help you bring home unique seasonal treasures at bargain market prices. This brings back memories of my time in Liverpool, U.K. when I operated Day Trips by air from my home airport, Liverpool, John Lennon International Airport back in the late 90's. I chartered an Airbus A320 and took over 150 passengers to Salzburg, Austria for a day at the Christmas Market (click on the link in the upper right column for an english translation). Salzburg’s Christmas Market, mentioned as far back as the 15th century, is located at the foot of the Hohensalzburg fortress, around the venerable cathedral of Salzburg.

Cool Ways to Avoid New Airline Fees

Carry-on to Put Fees in Check

The most common-sense solution for avoiding checked baggage fees is to simply not check your bags. With American, Continental, Northwest, United, US Airways, Frontier, and Spirit now charging $15 for a first checked bag (and most legacy and budget airlines charging around $25 for the second one checked) on each leg of a flight, it just makes (dollars and) sense to carry on. Invest in a strong, yet lightweight bag that’s in accordance with the bulk of airlines' carry-on allowances (check individual airline websites for details as sizes do vary) and reusable toiletries containers (sized under the TSA’s mandated maximum of three ounces) and leave worries of lost luggage, hefty additional fees, and long waits at ticket counters (and carousels) for checked bags – behind.

If You Must Check Bags, Check Wisely

The steepest checked baggage fees are tacked onto bags that are overweight (usually above 50 pounds) or oversized (from 62 inches). So while it may at first seem logical to try to cram everything into one bag instead of using two, know that while a first checked bag won’t set you back more than $15 on any airline, if it ends up being oversized or overweight it can cost anywhere from $29 (AirTran) to $175 (Delta, for over 70 pounds). Considering second checked bag fees hover around $25 on most airlines (bringing the average total for two checked bags to about $40), it's near-always the more economical option to check two bags than to go overboard on one. Alternatively, think about packing a small tote bag in your luggage that can be pulled out to use as a quick-fix carry on to transfer luggage overflow that might make your checked bag overweight by just a pound or two. If you must travel with more than two bags, or with overweight or oversized luggage, looking into a shipping agent like FedEx or the USPS for cost comparison is a smart move, as rates can actually be quite competitive.

Take your own Sleep Aids With You

If you’re looking to catch some onboard shut-eye, pack an inflatable pillow to carry on. Available at many travel and luggage stores, they can be quite comfortable, are more sanitary than airlines’ recycled arsenal, and takes up very little room; you can even fit one in your briefcase or purse.

BYOH: Bring Your Own Headset

A handful of airlines (United, JetBlue, and US Airways among them) are now charging anywhere from $1 to $5 for headsets that allow travelers to tune into the in-flight video entertainment. Simply bring your own iPod earbuds or headphones aboard for superior quality, and save on dishing out for their cheapie versions which you'll most likely end up throwing away.

Fight In-Flight Food Fees

With Continental the only remaining carrier to still provide complimentary meals, and more than half of domestic airlines now charging even for light snacks. Be wise and pack a brown bag meal ahead of time to carry on, there are lots of fast food outlets airside to purchase a meal from in advance.

Let Your Hotel Foot the Bill

Some very smart hotel chains have figured out a way to attract guests by offering to alleviate their newfound checked baggage expenses. Show your first checked bag receipt when checking in at a Loews Hotels for up to $30 in dining credit at the property under their Baggage Buy Back campaign. Kor Hotel’s Los Angeles-area hotels will reimburse guests with up to $75 in hotel credit through their Money Bags promotion, while Kimpton Hotels' We Got Your Bag campaign (which was just extended through the year’s end) gives guests who bunk down at one of the chain’s 43 boutique hotels throughout the US and Canada a room credit of up to $25 issued on the spot. Just don’t forget to hang onto those checked baggage receipts as proof.

Join the Airlines Frequent Flyer Club

Several airlines – including United, American, and Continental – will waive baggage fees if you are an elite member of their frequent flyer program. Remember to sign up for your carrier’s frequent flyer program before booking your flight to start accruing points, and if you are already a member of a program, keep in mind that loyalty to them might very well pay off in the long run.

Choose your Seat Wisely!

About half of domestic airlines are now charging for "preferred" seat selection – you’ll pay $20 for an exit row seat on AirTran or $10 for an aisle seat on Spirit, for instance. To avoid doling out the extra cash, check in online just prior to your flight (most airlines open up online check-in 24 hours before scheduled departures), when non-assigned seating inventory usually opens up to all passengers. If you are able to pick your seats in advance, however (the bulk of airlines are still not charging for non-preferred seating assignments), consider booking seats at the back of the plane where you’ll have first dibs on luggage space, meaning you won’t have to store your bag under the seat in front of you, taking up precious leg room. You’ll also get dibs on first-come, first-served amenities (for any that are still left!) like blankets and newspapers.

California Love: Sonoma

Hola! I've been neglecting the staycation posts for a while because there's really just so.much.good.stuff in the Bay Area to write about, it's kinda overwhelming.

A couple months ago I wrote a fairly extensive email to an old friend who asked about things to do in Sonoma for her family reunion... so I figured I'd share with you! I realize this isn't totally comprehensive (ie no nightlife, casual food reviews) but I'll cover those in a future post-- as well as some cool little gems in Napa, Yountville, and Healdsburg.

If you're planning a vacation to Sonoma, here are a few recommendations to get you started:

Lodging

Here are a couple places to check out, both easy walking distance from the square. I would recommend staying slightly off the square, since the hotels directly on the square (the Swiss, girl and the fig, EDK) have restaurants/bars attached to them, and the crowds at night may be a little noisier than expected.

Best Western – Not the most romantic place, but definitely the best location on a budget. Super close, half a block from the square, easy parking and across the street from Whole Foods. Check out the TripAdvisor reviews to see if this is for you.

Inn At Sonoma – I’ve stayed in the sister B&B in Santa Cruz; they’re super cute, and this one isn’t far from the square either. Bonus: they keep free bikes for guests to check out; our friends stayed here and really enjoyed it.

Bike rentals are also available at the Sonoma Cyclery on Broadway (left hand side as you are driving towards the square).

Dining

Pretty much everything in Sonoma is on the square (Broadway, the street that you'll take coming into town, runs right into it). You can't go wrong with places there, but just don't go to Shiso (on Broadway) because their sushi is definitely not very authentic.

For breakfast/lunch spots, anything on the square is good; it just depends on if you want to sit outside or in, take out or sit down. The Sonoma Cheese Factory (on the N side of the square) has deli sandwiches and a lot of pre-made gourmet salads, cookies, etc. that would be good for a picnic if you do a bike tour.

In the summer, it's nice enough to eat outside, so I'm going to list places that have outdoor patios (with heat lamps as well) so you have that option. This far in advance you shouldn't have a problem getting reservations at any of them. Prices for entrees at these places are usually in the $15-30 range.

The Swiss Hotel
Italian (slightly lighter, american style), large portions, very friendly service. They've also got a coveted front porch area with small tables that's a great place to grab a drink and/or some appetizers and people-watch. Try the glariffee (glazed irish coffee)-- it's an after-dinner drink that's the secret recipe of some little old lady who makes it for them.

Meritage: Martini oyster bar and grill
My favorite thing here is the lobster salad with avocado and grapefruit, but all the other dishes I’ve had are excellent as well. When you get a martini, they serve it with its own mini shaker, so it’s probably about a martini and a half. The chocolate one is really good. Meritage is not on the square proper, but it’s about half a block from the SW corner.

Harvest Moon Cafe
New american food, very well done. The interior looks kind of small from the front door, but it opens out onto a huge outdoor space in back that has a fountain and olive trees.

Depot Hotel
Classic Italian, great veal appetizer. They have a good mix of seafood/meat entrees as well; usually the seafood is the special that changes daily. The outdoor seating here is around a pool, which spreads the diners out a bit, and makes for a nice date night.

French, with a cute bar/lounge area in front that's very popular. You've got options for the cheese plate if you want to put together your own, or they'll make one for you. They serve traditional lighter french fare (croque monsieur, etc) as well as seasonally changing entrees. With all these great options, though, our absolute favorite outing here is for dessert (yum, profiteroles!) and drinks. That way, you get to take in the ambiance of the front room without committing to eating a whole meal on the cute tray tables they provide-- I can be quite oops-prone when I'm in a cute outfit!

Della Santina 's
Italian, very authentic. Their appetizer plates are enormous, so be forewarned. Pasta is excellent... we also had a completely unique dessert here made out of frozen egg whites and champagne. The back patio is enormous and has a vine-covered trellis, which really lends a European feel to the whole evening.

El Dorado Kitchen
More slick and city-like than the other places; modern furniture, cleaner design, etc. The jalapeno peach cocktail is good; their desserts are also excellent. This place is very hyped but service can get spotty; last time we actually left after cocktails since we waited over an hour with more than 6 open tables in sight, and the waitress gave us attitude after we asked nicely about table availability. That said, we've had great meals and friendly service there as well. Just cover your butt and make a reservation if you don't want to take chances.

Café La Haye
It’s difficult to get in on weekends without reserving quite a bit in advance, since it doesn’t seat very many. It’s kind of New American with a French twist… gets rave reviews, very unpretentious though and excellent food. One of my favorite things is the art; they also sponsor a gallery next door to the restaurant.

The Lodge at Sonoma, Carneros Bistro
We went here for the Valentine’s Day tasting menu, which was excellent—haven’t been there for regular dinner since we’re lazy and it’s more of a walk from the square, but the food and service get great reviews. Bonus: Fri night jazz in the lounge!

Btw, there's a Whole Foods on 2nd St. west, so if you want to cook or get picnic things while you're there, that's a one-stop shop. The Sonoma Market is also very good in terms of produce.

Vineyards

Why else do you go to Wine Country? For wine, of course! There are tons of great producers around, and it would take ages for me to list all of them, so check out Chowhound for comprehensive, detailed reviews.

Instead, I've focused on are local places that are really easy to get to from the Sonoma square, sans car. These are all within biking distance (1-2 miles) with only a couple small hills, so the two-wheel tour is a really fun option. Bike rentals are available at the Sonoma Cyclery on Broadway. (Note to the hardcore oenophiles: you can only put so many bottles in your bike basket, so if you generally buy cases of wine, yes, take the car.)

Gundlach Bundschu – Great tastings in a wine cave; it also has a very cute duck pond outside.

Ravenswood - Their motto? "No wimpy wines!" Zinfandel fans, this is your place!!! 2 tasting rooms, 1 for moderate, 1 for higher-priced wines. They credit your tasting fee towards your wine purchase.

Bartholomew Park - We may not have even been wine-tasting here, but it's a great place to bike with a picnic lunch. There's a huge grassy area on a hill that's perfect for relaxing and taking it all in.

Buena Vista

Nicholson Ranch

If you are ok with venturing outside of Sonoma, Glen Ellen is only 10-15 minutes away and the family-run Benziger Winery is organic/biodynamic, has a great tram tour, and has great wines. They also own Imagery Winery so I think if you go to one you can get a free tasting voucher for the other.

(I've heard to avoid sebastiani-- it's crowded, touristy, and you only get 1 pour.)

Massage/Spa

Lodge at Sonoma – Raindance Spa – VERY indulgent, great service. The Grapeseed Indulgence was amazing, and they do couples' treatments in a special double room with a fireplace, tub, and private balcony. BTW, your day pass is free with purchase of a treatment (as opposed to paying for both), so I'd suggest booking your spa appt for the afternoon, and checking in early to indulge for a while. The spa pools are separate from the general hotel pools, and in my opinion much nicer for relaxing. ;-)

MacArthur Place Spa (sl. closer to the square) - Haven't been here, but it gets great reviews.

Fairmont Mission Inn (about 10-15 min outside town) - Great service here as well. Love the elixirs and fresh fruit they have available for you when you're lounging poolside. Like the Lodge, day pass is free with treatment. The spa pools are slightly more crowded since they're available to the general hotel clientele as well, but it doesn't make a huge difference in the experience, IMHO.

Other things to do:

Definitely catch Tuesday evening farmer's market on the square (in the spring/summer)-- there are playgrounds and a duck pond, so it's easy to entertain the kids. There are a bunch of kids (toddlers to high schoolers) as well as parents and older people... sometimes live music, too. I think things get started around 5 and go until sunset. You can drink wine on the square, btw, so if you bring a bottle and grab a picnic, you're set.

Why not check out a cooking class? Ramekins is a popular choice.

Visit Jack London's old house in Glen Ellen, or to get more out of the way, go hiking or biking at Annadel State Park or Sugar Loaf.

Most of the charm is just going out and exploring; Sonoma's very mellow and I think you'll enjoy discovering the area.
