Two words for parents looking for a bedtime story for very young children: Owl Babies (Candlewick, 32 pp., $5.99, paperback, ages 1–3). In this popular picture book, Martin Waddell tells a lackluster story about the separation anxiety that strikes three fluffy white owlets that are left alone one night when their mother flies off to hunt for food. But Patrick Benson illustrates the tale with captivating ink-and-watercolor pictures that help to make up for the weaknesses of a text that is at times cutesy and overelaborated. Benson also sets the white owls against a very dark background that, more strongly than most picture books, immerses you in a nighttime world and sets the stage for bedtime.

I have no clue why (hormones? craziness?) but this 'forward' brought a tear to my eye by the end - it's SOOO cute:

My little guy, Cade, is quite a talker. He loves to communicate and does it quite well. He talks to people constantly, whether we're in the library, the grocery store or at a drive-thru window. People often comment on how clearly he speaks for a just-turned-3-year-old. And you never have to ask him to turn up the volume. It's always fully cranked. There've been several embarrassing times that I've wished the meaning of his words would have been masked by a not-so-audible voice, but never have I wished this more than last week at Costco.

Halfway, through our shopping trip, nature called, so I took Cade with me into the restroom. If you'd been one of the ladies in the restroom that evening, this is what you would have heard coming from the second to the last stall:

'Mommy, are you gonna go potty?

Oh! Why are you putting toiwet paper on the potty, Mommy?

Oh! You gonna sit down on da toiwet paper now?

Mommy, what are you doing?

Mommy, are you gonna go stinkies on the potty?'

At this point I started mentally counting how many women had been in the bathroom when I walked in. Several stalls were full ... 4? 5? Maybe we could wait until they all left before I had to make my debut out of this stall and reveal my identity. Cade continued:

'Mommy, you ARE going stinkies aren't you?

Oh, dats a good girl, Mommy!

Are you gonna get some candy for going stinkies on the potty?

Let me see doze stinkies, Mommy!

Oh ... Mommy! I'm trying to see In dere.

Oh! I see dem. Dat is a very good girl, Mommy. You are gonna get some candy!'

I heard a few faint chuckles coming from the stalls on either side of me. Where is a screaming new born when you need her? Good grief. This was really getting embarrassing. I was definitely waiting a long time before exiting. Trying to divert him, I said, 'Why don't you look in Mommy's purse and see if you can find some candy. We'll both have some!'

'No, I'm trying to see doze more stinkies.

Oh! Mommy!'

He started to gag at this point.

'Uh - oh, Mommy. I fink I'm gonna frow up.

Mommy, doze stinkies are making me frow up!!

Dat is so gross!!'

As the gags became louder, so did the chuckles outside my stall. I quickly flushed the toilet in hopes of changing the subject. I began to reason with myself: OK. There are four other toilets. If I count four flushes, I can be reasonably assured that those who overheard this embarrassing monologue will be long gone.

'Mommy! Would you get off the potty, now? I want you to be done going stinkies! Get up! Get up!'

He grunted as he tried to pull me off. Now I could hear full-blown
laughter. I bent down to count the feet outside my door.

'Oh, are you wooking under dere, Mommy?

You wooking under da door?

What were you wooking at?

Mommy? You wooking at the wady's feet?'

More laughter. I stood inside the locked door and tried to assess the situation.

'Mommy, it's time to wash our hands, now. We have to go out now, Mommy.'

He started pounding on the door. 'Mommy, don't you want to wash your hands? I want to go out!!'

I saw that my 'wait 'em out' plan was unraveling. I sheepishly opened the door, and found standing outside my stall, twenty to thirty ladies crowded around the stall, all smiling and starting to applaud. My first thought was complete embarrassment, then I thought, 'Where's the fine print on the 'motherhood contract' where I signed away every bit of my dignity and privacy?' But as my little boy gave me a big, cheeky grin while he rubbed bubbly soap between his chubby little hands, I thought, I'd sign it all away again, just to be known as Mommy to this little fellow.

And now I have a very busy weekend ahead too!

I've seemed to have run out of things to blog about this week. How weird. I'm still doing the photo thing though.

I was going to have a family photoshoot for a colleague this weekend, but she cancelled this morning. But maybe it's a blessing, I was wondering if I have the right lens for it. I'm sure I'll be able to take nice family pics with the lenses I have... right? I've been eyeing out a 50mm lens, but I'm not sure if I should get it right now.

Anyhoo, I was going to blog about Connor tonight. I'm feeling like I've let him down. He's really not developing and getting the stimulation he should be. I took Bradley to Moms and Babes classes on Saturdays, but I haven't even tried with Connor because of the time. And I think it's beginning to show now.

He's not talking yet, but Bradley was a chatterbox by now. The only things Connor can say is Mama, Dada, Badda (Bradley), bubba (bubbles), nana (which I HATE with a passion... that is bottle and dummy and food because that's what Beauty used to call food when he was tiny). And he's making animal sounds for cow, sheep, cat, dog, fish, duck, chicken, rooster etc. But that' it!!

And then ito fine motor skills, I'm almost positive Bradley could do more at this age. Connor doesn do arty things at all. If I give him a crayon to draw, he eats it after drawing one line!

Arrrgh!! I don't know. I don't really have the time, but maybe I should get him into a toddlers class of some sorts on Saturdays. Or, we'll have to put him in a playgroup a few mornings a week. But it's the middle of winter! He's going to be so sick if I do it now.

If you knew that your child, sister, brother, father, mother or someone important to yo

If you knew that your child, sister, brother, father, mother or someone important to you was in danger...would you take action to change what was about to happen? I would say that most of us would agree, that if we could change the chances of our loved ones being in danger or suffering....most of us would do the thing that it would require to keep them safe!

So then, why is it when the truth is staring us in the face about the health of our planet and the danger we are in with global warming; and the impact, that it is having on the world around us...most of us are not changing our daily lifestyle habits in a way that will help to prevent or slow down the destruction of our earths environment?

Denial has been a mainstay for many years by governments, scientists; not to mention corporations. As individuals we have to demand from our leaders more information and more action regarding protecting our environment from destruction. We also, as individuals...have to change the way that we live...making greener choices in both big and small ways. Those same leaders in the areas of government and science are now willing to admit that the greenhouse gas situation is critical. Corporations are a bit more reluctant because the cost to operate their business is going to increase with greener business practices. Still, if we don't start demanding it...it will take too long to ensure that changes are made with enough time to make a difference.

What can we do to insure that the earths environment is going to be safe and healthy enough for our children, and our grandchildren to survive? We can make changes...we can sacrifice a bit of convience to gain a better atmosphere for our loved ones to live in.

Former Presidential hopeful Al Gore has been creating an awareness for quite sometime...he has withstood public ridicule from those who are less informed about the seriousness of the issue. He has been getting plenty of professional support in recent years about his message. Check out some, of what he has to say here: http://www.algore.com/

Other celebrities are working towards not only awareness but action. Some are touting alternative energy sources, others are encouraging making the choice to hybrid vehicles, still others are working towards educating the public about using renewable building supplies. Each of those things are important and valid.

Some companies are taking a responsible path in how they package their products with less packaging. Some are harnessing solar energy to power their buildings. Many individuals are backing the goal of increasing wind power to bring some additional renewable power to compensate for the increasing demand for electricity on the power grid. There are things we all can do. So, are you ready for the truth of the matter of global warming and the greenhouse gas issues or are you going to settle for the painful consequences?

[caption id="attachment_292" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="K-Fed: Father of the Year"][/caption]

Britney Spears has agreed to hand the parenting reins over to Kevin Federline.

K-Fed's longtime attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, exclusively tells E! News the divorced duo have reached a settlement in their long-gestating custody case.

According to the agreement signed by all parties, Federline gets sole legal and physical custody of sons Sean Preston and Jayden James and Spears will have visitation rights.

"The case has been settled," Kaplan said. "The court still has to approve it. " Both parties are due in court Friday morning.

The case had been set to go to trial next month but all had been hoping to settle up beforehand.

"As of this evening there is a fully executed deal memo...All the issues that would have been addressed at trial have been settled," Kaplan told E! News. "Can't speak to the exact terms of the deal, [but the] orders in place...will stay in place."

[caption id="attachment_293" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Hey Brit, they DO make STROLLERS!!!"][/caption]

"He said, 'I need to have Britney to be involved in the coparenting of the kids, but I need there to be a structure.' "

But this is the structure he got, and "Kevin is absolutely delighted," Kaplan continued.

Spears has been enjoying monitored visits with her boys since late February after temporarily losing any on-hand-mommying privileges following a stretch of noticeably erratic behavior on her part and two brief hospital stays.

Federline's camp has credited the influence of Spears' father, Jamie, who was appointed a coconservator of his daughter's estate Feb. 1, for helping to get the 26-year-old popster back on track.

Good for the kids. Now let's hope her new album is a hit and that Kevin actually lives up to what's now going to be expected of him.

Now that we know how, we can't seem to stop making our own versions of the "ugly" dolls. My children have dozens of new designs that they have drawn, and I have made one for a friend. Both boys have asked if we could make another couple today.

I of course, keep imagining a half dozen or so sitting on my little bench at school. The kids would LOVE them! Where as I'm not sure I am really that ambitious, I do think I will help the boys each create another.

So I thought I would share our newest creation.

But I have been making other things as well. This was very simple and the plan was to hang earrings through it. I doubt now that I will do that, because I like it just the way it is. :) This is a very simple embroidery.

It is to hang in my bathroom. The one that still isn't quite done, but will be by the end of today!!!!

Isn’t summer great? It is hard to believe that school is just around the corner. If you haven

Isn't summer great? It is hard to believe that school is just around the corner. If you haven't already done this, you might want to make a Family Summer Fun List.

The Family Summer Fun List is fun for all and sometimes requires a sense of humor in it's creation and implementation. Call a family meeting and have everyone in the family write down 2 things they want to do before school starts. Now, be prepared because kids have great imaginations. As the ideas are presented, just write them down, ask questions and try really hard not to say no...or laugh. Just be positive and have fun with it. Post your list on the fridge and have a good time trying to make these fun things happen.

The Zoo and Children's Museum usually make our summer list but we have also had such simple requests as to eat ice cream, have a picnic, make s'mores and have a play date with friends. A couple of years ago, one of my kids suggested we go to Hawaii (yes, they dream big like me). Well, as fun as this sounded, we just couldn't mange that one. So instead, we improvised and had a Hawaiian Island Party. The kids helped plan the menu, wore their swimsuits and we all had a blast. It was our at home trip to the islands! Such fun!

Don't let the summer get away from you. Plan some fun times and enjoy your family! You're kids will thank you.

I will preface by saying I am a film minor and an avid movie buff.

I read a blog over on CNN's website about the new Batman movie. I will be seeing the new Batman movie in t-minus 4.5 hours. The blog entry had a very good topic about bringing kids to the movie theater (read it here).

Can I just say there is nothing more annoying than people being disruptive during a movie. DO NOT bring kids under the age of 8 to a movie that doesn't involve Pixar or Hannah Montana. Period. I am not being insensitive, I just don't think there is any reason or redeeming factor for kids to see all of that stuff or to disturb people who have payed $10+ to be there.

I will say that I realize it is not always kids who are being disruptive. You have "that guy" or "that girl" who think that they are watching a movie in their living room and can talk through the whole movie.

I can't believe I just ranted about that. Actually, yes I can.

Any opinions out there?

Andrea's quinceanera earlier this month was simple, sweet and a memorable event for a young girl turning 15. She had a nice gathering of friends and family to celebrate her 15th at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moline, and a reception following at the Col Ballroom in Davenport. Here are a couple images from her special day.

We all have special events and activities that make the vacation and holidays special. In our fami

We all have special events and activities that make the vacation and holidays special. In our family, we look forward to having relatives visit from Annandale to Australia. Last year we welcomed my sister in law, her husband, and their three children from Sydney, Australia. My goal was that everyone had a door! They all had somewhere they could go to have quiet time and close that door!

[caption id="attachment_12" align="alignright" width="72" caption="Cousin Hannah with Tommy"][/caption]

What is your plan to make your holiday or vacation work well? My children (1 and 3) simply could not keep up with the pace of the world travellers. Our solution: we went out with them in the mornings and the boys and I would come home for a nap. By the time the travellers returned, the boys were well rested and so was I! I knew I needed to bea pleasant host. What do you needto be a pleasant host?

By keeping a young child's routines in place, there is less chance of a total meltdown. Children are flexible but make sure that each child gets what they need daily (sleep, food, alone time, outdoor play, etc...) in order for them to be a pleasant guest or host. Having a favorite toy or activity is a welcome sight for your child when she is facing 25 other children or 42 new adults. If your child gets nervous in a new place or in a large group, discuss what will happen while you are there before you go into the party. Once inside the party, get food and drinks for everyone and again discuss what is going on at the party.

Occasionally the adult has expectations about a vacation or event that do not help the child. We all want our children to be nice and follow directions all the time. We know that does not happen. The office party is not the place to try new party manners. If there is a summer office party, find out about the child friendly activities and food. Bring your child's favorite food or eat before you go to the party. My son can never eat if there is too much going on - he is too excited! We eat peanut butter and jelly before we go anywhere! In the case of an office event, do your introductions early and have one parent play with the children while the other adult chats. If you child does not enjoy meeting new people, don't expect him to shake hands and say "Hello, It's nice to meet you". Work on a greeting that works for both of you. Make it a two or three step greeting: Eye contact, say "Hello".

Make a plan so your summer events are happy and fun. If you need some more ideas about avoiding sensory overload, please post a comment. I have tons of practical solutions!

Telephones are a big deal around here.
Little Dude has studied the Hubby and I talking on the phone

Telephones are a big deal around here.

Little Dude has studied the Hubby and I talking on the phone - be it the cell or home phone - and loves getting his hands on a phone so he can do the same thing.

It isn't unusual to see him walking through the house, holding one of his four toy phones (Don't look at us - he kept getting them as gifts!) to his ear, chattering away. In fact, he frequently hands us the phones or holds them to our ears so we can talk.

Because he kept trying to steal our cell phones or the home phone, we gave him an old cell phone to include in his collection. But it really doesn't matter - he wants one of the "real ones," and is always on the lookout for when we slip-up and leave one within reach.

He prides himself in knowing how to turn on all of our phones(this actually scares me, as he is way too observant and smart), and if he manages to get the TV remote, that is considered a phone as well. Actually - my iPod, my handheld PDA and my camera have all been held to his ear at one point or another.

When he hands me one of his phones, I usually pretend I'm having a conversation with a cartoon character or that it is a wrong number. But I have to wonder - what is going through his mind and who does he think we are talking to?

He's "talked" to grandparents on the real phone, and he's even "talked" to me when I've been at work. The Hubby enjoys talking to him, too, so is he imagining that we are on the other end of all of these phone conversations?

Will we need to be getting him a cell phone at the age of three, since he will have phone etiquette down to a science?

He's already figured out that I have a new cell phone, and keeps trying to score some playtime with it. (By the way, I upgraded to an LG Shine. It was one of the free phones I could choose from within my plan, and it was shiny and pretty, plus had the features I wanted for now. Yes, the girl side of me loves shiny, pretty objects, and is easily distracted by them. I'll let you know how I like it after I have a chance to play with it more.) And I was going to give him my old cell phone, but the phone salesperson recommended I keep that one as a back-up, just in case something were to happen to the new phone (and judging by everything that has happened to my electronics in the past six months, I think it would be wise for me to have a back-up...).

I thought we had a future electrical engineer or electrician on our hands, but I'm now starting to think we may have a future telemarketer! Eek!

There are times when I feel art is hopeless: inundated by music and the unpleasant plethora of bad art, that vision has become secondary. Yet every now and again I pull my head out of the sand, to realise that there is a whole world of non-music, multi-disciplinary art out there. I am reassured that musicians aren't in it alone, knowing that there exists an equally unsettling amount of bad non-music art. Anyhow, not to say that I am a barometer of any sort on what makes art "good" or "bad," but today I was intrigued by this...

I was just reading the pages of a blog I enjoy called design*sponge, and they were talking about a Korean artist named Yeondoo Jung. He had asked a bunch of 5 to 7 year old kids to do drawings which Jung then reinterpreted in photographs. Here's an example, but you should check out the entire project called Wonderland.

I really wish I knew where my cell phone is because it has a camera on it. I wanted to take a pictu

I really wish I knew where my cell phone is because it has a camera on it. I wanted to take a picture of Garren hiding under a chair in the doctor's office because he didn't want to get his preschool shots.

I couldn't use my regular pediatrician as they were booked out for months, so I had to use the one I use for quickie appt. This is where my hippy granola roots and conspiracy theorist personality kick in. I love my regular doctor because she's a holistic health practitioner as well as a reguarly trained physician. This combo is nice because she's not quick to just drug up my kids, but will if it turns out to be necessary. And she knows us, so she doesn't asked invasive none of her business questions.

I don't get my kids their shots as infants because I don't like the idea of pumping all that crap into new babies. They have to get a boatload of shots before they're two, but if you wait till they're four, for some reason the amount of shots required is significantally lower. I've done this with all my kids and they've been fine. My other problem is they're constantly adding new shots to the requirements. When is it too much? Gavin the 2 year old has only had the shots that are given when they're born.

I'd like to stress that my kids don't go to daycare, so they're not being exposed to all sorts of stuff. If my kids went to daycare, they'd be immunized sooner.

I call to make Garren's appt. and cringe because I get the tongue cluck and I can picture them shaking their heads as they exclaim to me in utter astonishment, "He hasn't had all his shots yet?" It has happened with the older two kids as well. Oh I know, I'm the evil mom. The quack that must live in a hippy commune and only lives on lettuce and water.

I didn't tell Garren he was getting a shot or two, just told him he was going to the doctor. No need to traumatize him till they actually whip out the needle. Everything was going fine, except big mouth sister had to spill the beans right as we walked into the building. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Garren, you know you're getting a shot.

Madeleine! Be quiet! I didn't want Garren to know yet.

Here Madeleine tries to make up for it.

Um, but it doesn't hurt Garren. It's like a mosquito bite.

Madeleine! Just stop!

It went downhill from there on out.

Garren doesn't want to get a shot. Garren doesn't need a shot. Garren is not sick.

Garren only speaks in the 3rd person.

It will be fine Garren, let's just talk to the doctor.

I'm always a little bit bugged by some of the questions they ask. If you want to give him a physical that's fine, but some of your questions are a bit out of line in my book. Again, prolly my conspiracy paranoia coming out. At other checkups I've had a doctor ask my son whether there was alchohol or guns in my home. Not.their.business. When they ask questions like that I sit very still and wonder whether anyone will announce that Garren has been able to open mommy's beers all by himself since he was 3.

I suppose, one could say, well if I had nothing to hide, what's the big deal? I don't know. There's just something about government over-involvement that brings out the libertarian in me. I've seen too many cases where people, however well meaning, got involved and ruined families because of a mistaken idea about a family. Yes, I've probably watched too much CourtTV in my time.

At this appt. she asked Garren if he was a good boy.

Yes, Garren's a good boy.

Then she asked what mommy does for Garren if he's a good boy. He doesn't really understand the question.

Garren is a good boy!

This next question is what got my hackles up.

What does mommy do if Garren is a bad boy?

Here's where I panic. Is he going to tell her about the long hours in the cage in that one closet? Is he going to talk about the bed of nails he has to sleep on every night? The fact that he has no toys and is forced to use dirt as his only form of entertainment? For the love of God, what's he going to say?

Apparently, this question annoyed him because he'd already answered her the first time and he answered, quite exascerbated with her stupidity.

Garren.is.a.good.boy!

Obviously if he's a good boy, then he's not a bad boy, right? Garren was not going to be fooled by this trick question. I'm bugged that she asked the question. In my mind, she was trying to find out if he got spanked or anything. But come on lady, you've looked at his entire body from head to toe. Aside from a few bruises on his shins, he has no other cuts, scratches or dents. He's not shrinking in fear from her touch and he's not shy and is talking animatedly about how his big brother Graham pays Garren to buy Garren's computer time from him. Hear the jingle in his pockets? And the other kids that are with me are behaving the same way.

Apparently she was satisfied. She said, the nurse will be in to give the shots.

My stomach drops. I flippin' hate this part.

Garren decides to hide under a chair because he's not going to get a shot.

Garren, mommy will get you a treat if you are a good boy with your shots.

Garren doesn't want a treat.

The nurse comes in, coaxes him out of the chair and administers 3 shots without a single tear.

On the way out the door we hit the treasure box and Garren got himself a parachute guy. Then onto Mickey D's for an ice cream cone.

Mom, can Garren go to the doctors and get hurt again so he can get another parachute guy?

Uh, no son.

'Bullying is the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation. Bullying can be defined in many different ways. Although the UK currently has no legal definition of bullying, some US states have laws against it. Bullying is usually done to coerce others by fear or threat.
Bullying in school is also referred to as peer abuse.'

No one deserves to be bullied- in school bullying can occur on 'both siides of the fence'. You can be bullied by a fellow student, but even us teachers can be bullied by colleagues or management. We must both stand up to it. It is often easier for the adult to stand up to the bully- don't be forced into a situation you feel uncomfortable about through fear of losing your job. Jobs come and go, but self worth goes at a price. I remember being told by a boss- her name was Jane, she'll know who she is, ( who until that point had also been a friend ) that I was required to give one to one lessons to a male student. I told her in no uncertain terms that I did not feel comfortable about this and did not want to do it . My bad feelings were confirmed when I heard he 'wanted a nice female teacher'.....I refused to teach him , was told I ''had to'' and continued to refuse. I told my boss that there was nothing in this life I had to do if I didn't want to and that life was too short. I didn't teach him, and my punishment was that, as well as teaching my usual afternoon and evening classes ( 6 hours per day ) I was put on the front desk as 'receptionist' for the three remaining days of my penultimate week at work. Not much fun but I kept my self esteem- I also got my salary and took the last three days of the following week off.

Jennifer, who’s blogging gets me weird looks at work because I often snort out loud with laugh

Jennifer, who's blogging gets me weird looks at work because I often snort out loud with laughter, commented on how my cat matches the color scheme in my house.

Well, there is a reason for that! And yes, dammit, I am proud that I employed my largely underutilized brain! Successfully!! And whew! All that trance music and glow-sticks in college didn't do as much damage as I feared ;-)

There are some certainties in life when you live in the Girlie Fabu-Palace (formerly the Craptacular Cave):

the vinyl tile flooring is tired but replacing or covering is just not an option (even I have my limits)

the more things I have to move in order to clean, the less I clean

there's no room for a dining table so food willbe eaten in the livingroom, and said food will inevitably end up on the floor

whilst my child has amazing manners for a 9 year old, her friends mostly do not share the same level of domestication; and I want my home to be the place where she hangs out with her friends

our cat has dry skin and a double-coat that sheds massive clumps of flakyfur year round

These are facts of our life so my design decisions have been made with them in the forefront of my mind. Therefore you'll find most everything in my house:

draws attention up and away from the floor;

serves multiple purposes and/or has been ruthlessly uncluttered;

is stain resistant and easy to clean if I love it or it is of value, or will cause minimal emotional or environmental damage if it needs to be tossed;

is tough as nails and is meant to be used without my constant stressful supervision (I don't need any excuses to be even more uptight around the child and her fellow junior terrorists);

hides copious amounts of cat hair or is super easy to remove copious amounts of cat hair (although my livingroom carpet is currently a big FAIL on that front, but hopefully a vacuum upgrade will mitigate that).

The cat - Kenai- has been around for 13 years now and all of those years she's been primarily gray (the blue tabbyness of it all) so really it's the color scheme that goes with her!
