I had to hard reset my HTC Wizard today (not for the first time). I normally use Option 1 (see below). Then I remembered that these devices do have a hard reset option by having a sequence of keys pressed at the same time. Oh... I have used an iPAQ Pocket PC previously.

So here are the two ways to hard reset your HTC wizard:

Option 1:
Start > Settings > Clear Storage (then enter in the magic number it gives you and tap 'YES')

Option 2: [A bit complicated]

The sequence: Press the Comm Manager button (top left) + Voice Command button (top right) + Soft Reset button (middle right, below the IR Receiver).

The tricky part: Continue to hold the two side buttons (Comm Manager + Voice Command) and don't let go. Release the Soft Reset button only and quickly press the Down button of the navigation pad for a few seconds until you find a prompt on the screen.

That's it: Once you get the prompt, release all buttons and press the Talk Button (send button).

Follow the instructions on the screen and you should be ready to go with a refreshed device.

Please do add a comment below to say whether this worked for you or not. Thanks!

Location aware search service - the Traveling Businessman use case

Its time for putting the pieces together!
Using the combination of location aware social networks, r

Its time for putting the pieces together!

Using the combination of location aware social networks, recommendation and search engines a new service can contribute to successful, pleasant and safe business trip. Most of the pieces exists today and some implementations are closer than others. In this case again what that is available to the consumers is ahead of what that is available for the business.

The objective is getting the relevant information to someone on a business trip when it is most useful. The success factors are relevance, timing and quality.

Systems that are built around location detection technology should be capable of supporting both "off-location" setting and "at-the-location" configuration. Having the option to prepare for a trip ahead of time can help in providing a great travel experience once there and after. The richer the options to pre-configure the traveler preferences the easier to meet each of the above success factors.

The benefits using location based system over manually entering zip code is twofold.

The first is accuracy - hybrid systems today using multiple ways to locate a mobile device (and you) can do way better job than the zip code scheme. In emergency try to find somebody in an area size defined by a zip code. Another case is providing traffic or even crime information near you. On a less dramatic case maybe you have no rental in this trip and the only option is walking so few mile range could be useless.

The second benefit is asynchronous communication - if the system knows where you are the service can push information to you and not wait till you pool the data (after entering the zip code).

It is not about pushing "quality" spam at you. It is about eliminating the noise.

Success factors

Relevance and timing

I'm here now- what options are both possible and available for me?

These are my needs and objectives - how can you help me here and now?

Share my location and find who's near me

Here is my agenda - I can consume information during these times.

I'm in one of these possible trip states: planning, soon to go, arrival, following agenda, still there, leave (back home or another destination), not my first visit here. There are probably more options.

Communication preferences:

Immediacy - alert me: small pop-up windows for notification like the ones used by Instant Massaging client tools or Twhirl are a better option. And SMS.

RSS feeds,

Email is not so great but still an option for detailed information.

Events - what is happening around me with enough time to plan for.

Maps and directions

Emergency holler

Quality

Filter by my preferences - exclude or include words/tags something like filtrbox

Filter by others - recommendations, rating, bookmarking

Add my own recommendations and annotations

Stared(bookmark)/rated information

No fluff - give me the bottom line first. I can't read a page long information in the first scan.

Additional ideas

Things to do for a trip preparation

Itinerary - accommodation, sport, weather (gallery?) food, entertainment, shopping.

Agenda - blackout periods (meetings)

Using past information or the "wisdom of the crowed" - other people that went there.

Arrival - traffic, news (what local sports team won/lost)

Lunch Break - allow some information flow - alerts

End of business day - shuttle, near by connections (social), events.

Next day (few days trip to the same spot case) - show me something new please.

Next destination - something changed that I should be aware of?

Recurrent trip (save settings - rating, more of this)

I can go on here...

Social/sharing

Other travelers shares their favorites bits of information.

Are we there yet? .... Are we there yet?

After a few months off, I have decided that its time to come back to the blog. It was easy to sit

After a few months off, I have decided that its time to come back to the blog. It was easy to sit around and rant in February while the world outside was cold and dreary, but when spring sprung I found myself out in the park with a book or a frisbee or a beer at the times when I would have written. I hope I still have a reader or two.

Where to begin?

I’m going to start by humbly eating some of my words. Kind of. I got really irked by a presentation a while back at the PLA conference called “Why we Borrow”, an adaptation of Envirosell/Paco Underhill’s “Why we Buy” book about tracking customer patterns in the retail environment. The results of their study were undoubtedly pretty cool and totally useful (download the powerpoint here), but my gripe was that librarians really ought to be doing things like this themselves rather than hiring outside consultants. Having begun to take a shot at such a thing myself, I believe I now understand why we depend on consultants for services like this. First, it is difficult and time consuming and most libraries are understaffed. Second, many public library systems are structured in such a manner that all of IT functions as a support service, completely divorced from the programmatic/public service side of the house. Without departments devoted to user experience, digital services, or digital initiatives, public libraries will not really be able to build a staff that is empowered and expected to create tools and studies akin to Envirosell’s. UNLESS: through collaboration we can all help eachother.

A couple of months ago, colleagues and I started scheming out a plan to do a building usage study for the Central Library at Brooklyn Public Library. The general idea is to borrow a lot of the methodology used for website usability studies and apply it to the physical architecture and overall service ecology of this particular library building. By tracking library patrons’ paths and decisions through space and time, we figure we can establish metrics describing weaknesses and strengths in our various service interfaces. If you ask 100 people in a study to locate “The Catcher in the Rye” and they all make similar mistakes or struggled next to the same sign, kiosk, library employee, or screen, then you can draw certain conclusions and make corrections based on them. As of now the plan is to use Google SketchUp Pro to extrude a 3d model of the building from a CAD file and then to actually graph people’s “journeys” as they perform these tasks (I hope this is not overambitious). The whole thing is really no different than the Envirosell project, the only real difference is that it takes advantage of free software. My suggestion is to sort of “open-source” the project development through a wiki so that other libraries and librarians can modify and improve the methodology. No, there’s nothing really that groundbreaking about that approach but at least it helps to empower a larger group of librarians as tool builders.

Now for the fun stuff…

In the meantime, while I’ve been trying to determine what I wanted to measure at the library and while discussing how to actually accomplish any of these goals, a few interesting and undoubtedly expensive services appeared in the news. I look at these as potential upgrades or improvements upon the Envirosell videocamera heavy approach (they shot 350 hours of video in the San Jose libraries). First is Path Intelligence and their product “FootPath, the only automated measurement technology that can continuously monitor the path that your shoppers or passengers take”. These Orwellian guys monitor cellphone signals to do this same journey-tracking work in retail environments, and you have to figure they do it with incredible accuracy. Then, fairly recently, I became aware of CitySense, a mobile app for the BlackBerry. THIS RULES. “Citysense shows the overall activity level of the city, top activity hotspots, and places with unexpectedly high activity, all in real-time. Then it links to Yelp and Google to show what venues are operating at those locations.” CitySense is similar to Stamen’s streaming visualization project “Cabspotting” which tracks the volume of cabs in San Francisco in real time, only it is far more powerful because it is available on a mobile device. What if CitySense could be implemented on a smaller level, just in one public building? What if a teen is able to activate “LibrarySense” on his or her mobile phone and use it to determine where in the building other people with similar interests are congregating? Wouldn’t this effectively turn every other patron in the building into a blip that you opt to have displayed on your mobile based on preferences and settings? This would mean you can skip traditional “social networking” practices and infer characteristics of blips by observing their actual behaviors. Think about that- that’s deep! All of your Facebook and Myspace crap really is just a transition into a much richer social/digital/virtual world environment soon to come.

Anyways…

If any readers are actually interested in taking a crack at this building usage methodology, drop a comment and I’ll create a wiki for us to collaborate on. I’m winging this, but I think there’s potential to do something here. Thanks for reading, its good to be back, I’m gonna go watch some fireworks.

In a previous post I commented on how the open-source development community responded negatively to comments made by Dr. Ari Jaaksi, VP of Software & Head of Open-Source Operations for Nokia. Dr. Jaaksi suggested that the open-source community needed to learn a thing or two about the mobile space & that the community needed to change their current approach for developing software applications due to the out-of-date business rules that are still enforced by the mobile industry.

Two days ago Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, made a very different statement when they made a move to buy up the remaining ownership in the smartphone software maker Symbian. If the $410 million deal goes through, Nokia will retain 47.9% majority ownership of Symbian. This move by Nokia indicates concern for those lower-cost mobile phone operating systems from Google Android & the LiMo Foundation.

With the mobile market heating up & businesses moving quickly to develop mobile applications it is key for Nokia to be running an OS which is widely accepted by the development community. Today, Symbian is used in two-thirds of smartphones being sold. Symbian's closest rival is Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS, which has just 13% of the market. Of course, both Apple & Google plan to gain a piece of this market very quickly. Apple has been making a lot of noise with its new software release for the 3G iPhone & although rumored to be behind Google is sure to gain a significant piece of this market when its Android software is released.

The good news for application developers & businesses is that we'll have options when deciding which devices & operating systems we want to develop applications for. Because of the increased competition in this market both device & OS manufactures will be more likely to bend & do more to ensure we are using their solution & not their competitors.

When you mention the ‘P’ word to mobile operators, they are most likely going to cringe

When you mention the 'P' word to mobile operators, they are most likely going to cringe and turn away. Peer to Peer or P2P has been largely dreaded in the mobile world. It somehow reminds me of Harry Potter and "He who must not be named". This treatment is understandable owing to the BitTorrent's and Napster's of the Internet world. P2P has dominated the headlines and some of the Internet founders are still rallying against it. The Internet world has a problem with P2P and I do sympathise with the ISPs who are facing the question of throttling capacity.

However in the mobile world, I see P2P being a bridge between the mobile operator, who in some sense is at a disconnect with how users interact and use phones, and the end user who is thinking of innovative disruptive uses of the mobile. We have just released a report on Multimedia Mobile Content Distribution that talks about the dangers of not paying attention to a grassroot phenomenon, i.e end user content sharing. Our estimates show that if operators and the content value chain continue to ignore this trend, they are very likely going to put $16 billion of revenue opportunity at risk by the year 2012. This will account for more than a quarter of the content revenue opportunity in that year. The report, although seen by many as a wake up call, is actually aimed at educating the mobile industry about strategies that they can adopt to mitigate this disruption.

If you take the P2P trend on the Internet, it has grown leaps and bounds. Figures in the US put it at 44% of total traffic, while in Eastern Europe estimates are quite alarming, nearing 80%. Whatever the figures, we all know that P2P is primarily used to share content. This includes music, videos, games, software and is generally associated with piracy. Although Napster, a.k.a. the Elvis of P2P, the one who started it all, has mended its ways, in the end its all coming down to ISPs throttling traffic and Google un-throttling it. The question is will this repeat itself in the mobile world? In my view it is inevitable, however the context of P2P in mobiles is different.

To better understand P2P in the mobile context we need to understand the usability cases for a laptop/PC and a mobile device, when both are connected to the Internet. The fundamental difference is that the mobile is used to generate and share content, while the PC is used to consume and share content. Yes, the mobile is also being used to consume content, but more importantly it is a video and image capture device that is always on you. The best evidence is found in the 'M-generation' who you see in flocks capturing rock concerts, Obama speeches, Lakers games, Euro 2008 goals, etc. This is a trend that needs to be taken seriously. Our estimates show that videos and images will be the two prominent forms of multimedia content that will be shared on mobile networks, followed by music.

The common string that binds all user generated content is that it will be shared with friends, family and contacts on social networks. Even content purchased from operator portals and content provider sites is likely to be shared. To better understand the sharing trend on mobiles we introduce a new term User Originated Content (UOC) which is a superset of UGC (user generated content) and Off-the-shelf content.

If you understand the above, you will begin to understand how P2P can actually benefit mobile operators and the content value chain itself. Traditional techniques like the client server model where the end user requests content from a server within the network, goes completely against the emerging UOC paradigm. If you have users constantly uploading and downloading content through their mobiles, you very quickly flood the air interface that exists between a mobile and the base station, causing a bottleneck. Imagine a Coldplay concert with thousands of fans trying to upload and download content. It reminds me of my constant struggle with WiFi at conferences. There are other alternatives in such situations, which include using Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), picocells and femtocells, but imagine the costs and management of these ad-hoc arrangements.

Using P2P networks, operators can balance the load on their access network, assisting and augmenting content transfer. In all these approaches operators are still involved, as they can manage the forward and reverse proxies. Its just that the actual content transfer happens between end users or is assisted by the operators themselves.

There is a business case here that needs to be explored further and I believe that this can only happen with the assistance of the mobile operator, who eventually controls the end user relationship. However, if operators continue to treat P2P as their Voldemort, all of the engineering innovation and business cases that can be explored have no meaning.

There has been a great deal of talk about the iPhone - how revolutionary it is, the latest version

There has been a great deal of talk about the iPhone - how revolutionary it is, the latest version and of course competitors to it. The iPhone is beginning to take a chunk of the Smart Phone category away from BlackBerry. Additionally, much of the recent press has been about the competition releasing devices to combat the iPhone and how great the devices are, blah, blah, blah. I have some bad news for the competition. They will never surpass the iPhone in popularity. I am not saying this because I am an Apple loyalist (I do not own an iPhone). I am saying this because it is law. It is part of the laws of "Positioning" which in marketing-speak is to say that the iPhone has captured the "first-mover" position in the minds of consumers. In addition to their superior operating system, which the competition cannot copy, they have created the perception of innovation with the iPhone as it relates to what consumers were used to.

All that said, the iPhone will most likely never supplant BlackBerry as the number one Smart Phone either and will remain the #2 in the category. But, the competition will never supplant the iPhone and what it has done in terms of its market share. The iPhone will however, be the #1 touch screen phone, if it already isn't. Remember when the iPod came out and was subsequently followed by all the iPod killers like the Zune? Umm, where's the Zune now? Same law is in effect. First mover, combined with innovation, from a company that has the ability to let customers know about new products will always own the mind of the consumer.

WrapMail will abide by the same law. We have the first-mover advantage and have created innovation to the most frequently used business communication tool there is - email. Much like the iPhone did for Smart Phones, we will benefit from the same transformation in consumer thinking and perception about email marketing and how to use 'everyday' emails to communicate to customers and prospects.

And to kick start this I am blogging from an MSI Wind UMPC. What better way to start my endeavor to explore and gauge technologies that are not just revolutionary but give an exciting look into the future of computing. The discussions at key forums and meets across the world are talking about the next wave of computing users. 1 Billion In all who would be primarily focused on Internet usage.

As a writer and blogger, it feels exciting to know that now I can be truly mobile and publish on the go, while not carrying around a power hungry, heavy and sensitive device. The possibilities seem excitingly huge.

‘I could go online and publish a blog on my experience midway on the snowy hills of the Gangotri while plugging in to my phone's GPRS connection over Bluetooth’

Interestingly, all this being offered in just close to a kilo in mass, 4.5 hrs battery backup, a sleek 10.2 inches wide box and as thick as a book in your hand. There is a web cam to live cast if you suddenly wished to livecast and announce from the top of the Eiffel tower about your experience or your disgust on the traffic mess you are in. First look and feel and usage seems interesting enough to intimidate me to conclude on a buying decision. But I just got to know that there is a black variant of the same yet to be released. Black surely could steal the show.

I thought it might be useful for me to summarize some of my observations and learnings from the recently concluded Handsets World conference in Berlin.

1. It came as no surprise that the mobile industry is very wary of those two behemoths of the Internet world, Apple and Google. The Iphone and Android came up so many times during the conference that it almost felt like they have achieved a secret cult status in the handset industry, where they are eyed with suspicion in public forums but are worshipped behind closed doors. The irony is that neither Apple or Google were are this conference, which was supposed to be a forum for the mobile handset industry to come together and discuss future directions.

2. Ed Candy from Hutchison 3G brought up an interesting point during one of the panel discussions where he mentioned that from a user interface/usability perspective we might be moving from a digital, 0 and 1, click here click there scenario to more of an analog, multiple inputs, drag, touch, pinch, rotate interface. Yes, the Iphone has changed things allowing people to touch, drag, pinch the interface, something that you could never even have dreamed off on a Blackberry or Nokia N95. So in essence the machinery under the interface works on digital but the interface itself has an analog feel. I found that to be a fascinating insight!

3. Another insight from a user interface design perspective was that, most handset makers have had engineers write the code for the phones, and then fit a user interface around that code. The problem is that you get the typical menu driven, hierarchical, 'right click and choose' type of usability. As a coder myself, I realize that this is how a machine would perform a task and so the coder starts thinking like a computer and the end result is that we have an interface that a robot would easily understand. We humans are not robots, we do not think like computers, there is logic, but at the same time there is an analog element to it, there is a tactile, almost emotional element attached to that. I am sorry to bring this up again but the IPhone has moved in the right direction, allowing for humans to use the machine as they would use a book for example. They like to fold, touch, pinch and immerse themselves in the content (for that matter check out Bumptop). Apple has designers calling the shots and then writing the code to fit the interface, not the other way around. As I myself am fascinated by design and architecture, my wife and brother both being designers, there has always been a constant battle about how we approach and perceive things differently. I thought the analog/digital example and engineers thinking like machines and not the other way round, was really a brainwave for me. BTW the problem that many of us are now facing is that here is a human adapted interface on the Iphone that lets us explore, have fun and play around, but we are just so used to the Blackberry, Nokia, rigid way of accessing things. This could be one of the reasons why there is anxiety and frustration with some of the Iphone users not being able to use the touch keypad.

4. I am not trying to trash Nokia here. In fact there were some very interesting views presented by Ari Jaaksi from Nokia at the keynote. He said that there is a growing need to involve consumers in the design of their devices. He gave the example of their Nokia 810i WiMAX tablet which has been sort of an experiment with them going open source (not on the OS but on the applications) and involving focus groups for building the user interface. He was very equivocal in stating that in order to keep up (would love to use the word survive..but then its Nokia!) in this rapidly changing industry, the OEMs should go to the open source community themselves, in other words approach them and work with them, rather than create their own versions of these applications.

5. The open source platform debate was indeed a big part of the conference with the guys from Symbian trying to hold fort against the rest of the open source crowd. There was a very interesting comment from Andreas Constantinou from Vision Mobile who said that "Android is a singularity in the way platforms are built!". As I have been quoted on ZDNet, I will reiterate that fragmentation is a good thing for the mobile industry as it drives innovation. The industry may not like it, but we need a breath of fresh air, new thinking, new innovation. I don't care who brings about this change. But at the moment it looks like outsiders like Google and Android are definitely causing a stir.

6. There were some fascinating new companies out there who should be mentioned.

-The first is Modu from Israel that many of you might have heard about. They have separated the phone itself from the function that it provides. They essentially provide multiple jackets for a phone adapting to different lifestyles. Its similar to the phone covers that became popular and still are with the younger generation. However, they have taken that concept and expanded it so that the basic phone could fit into any jacket form factor like an mp3 player, alarm clock, car stereo etc. Nevertheless I asked a question on whether they could add WiFi, LTE radios onto the jackets instead of going through the long 9-18 month design cycle. I asked this mainly from a SDR perspective as I am interested in the reconfigurability of handsets, both the radio and the baseband. The answer that I got was yes they can do it on the jacket and in fact have a WiFi jacket. I am not sure if they can do LTE, as that would require major changes to the baseband. In any case the concept of separating the functionality from the phone hardware itself is quite unique. I thought it is a step in the right direction for SDR as that separates the underlying software (not application software) from the hardware.

- The other is Emporia from Austria who have launched a phone for 60 year olds. They sell the concept of a simplistic phone, with a stylish design but easy to use and handle. They have already sold 250,000 phones which I think is an achievement for a family run company. It also has a red button for emergencies that automatically turns the speaker phone on and calls pre-stored numbers which could be the hospital or family. Brilliant.

- The last company that I will mention is Vuzix, who make wearable displays. They were showcasing their new line of eyewear that looks just like a piece of normal shades but can be connected to your phone. They demoed an N95 playing Spiderman 3 connected to their product. Unfortunately I could not try it on, but it definitely looked like something that has innumerable applications from connecting to Ipods, Sony PSPs, Xbox, mobile phones etc. I have written earlier about Microvision and their display technology. But I think where all this is ultimately going is having a display that fits into your contact lens. I recently saw a prototype version of this on the BBC program Click. Watch this space is what I recommend.

There's a lot of debate right now over the future of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), so I figured I might as well throw in my two cents and set it all straight. Some folks say that everybody is gonna be dragging around a really small laptop with a ton of power, extremely long battery life, and a full operating system, such as ASUSTeK's Eee PC or Apple's MacBook Air; others insist that a smartphone-like device, similar to Apple's iPhone, will be what the world carries in their pocket. Me? I'll take the latter. Don't get me wrong, I think that tomorrow's laptops will be ultra-portable just like the Eee PC and the MacBook Air, or possibly even be similar to a UMPC. However, I have no doubt that people's primary portable device will be a "SuperPhone."

It simply makes more sense to just put a full (even more so than iPhone's Mobile Safari) Web browser and, at least a somewhat more, complete operating system on a device like a cell phone that nearly three-hundred million people in the United States alone already carry with them on a regular basis. The iPhone actually comes very close to this. Essentially, all a phone would need to fulfill these requirements and be just as good as having a UMPC or Eee PC is to have all of the features of the iPhone, in addition to a full Web browser and a full OS. The key points that the current iPhone's software lacks are the ability to view all of the Web 2.0 content on any page on the Internet, the ability to download any kind of file, including additional software, and, most importantly, the ability to easily develop and release applications for that device in order to expand its functionality. The operating system itself needs to be very flexible and easily allow features to be added via of 3rd-party software. The iPhone will be adding support for 3rd-party apps soon, but only from Apple approved developers. That's not enough, anyone needs to be able to develop and release software apps for the devices. Of course, they also need to support much faster mobile broadband, which will come with 4th Generation wireless technologies, especially LTE (Long Term Evolution) around 2011.

I believe that within the next few years, we will see a major shift in the cell phone industry, which in part has already been sparked by the inception of the iPhone, toward devices that more and more resemble a mobile computer. They will have complete operating systems with many interesting (and some nearly useless) features just as desktop and laptop computers today, complete with full Internet browsers, and extensive third-party application support to enable even more features and mobile gaming. Ultra-fast wireless broadband will accompany this array of new features with speeds of 100 Mbps or more (12 times faster than the average fastest wired broadband of today). These new devices will also have elaborate touch screens which will provide a brilliant user experience. Anything you can do on a computer, you will be able to do on your cell phone, or whatever they end up being called. However, as cell phones resemble computers more and more, security risks increase, but I'll save that for another day.

Businesses always make more profits when they get early mover advantage in the market for new techno

Businesses always make more profits when they get early mover advantage in the market for new technologies and ideas. Individual/ end users many a times get benefited when they adopt a technology in later stages of its development. Because by then, most, if not all, lacunae would have been filled by the manufacturers. I sincerely hope that the reader of this post is getting, what I am pointing at...Yes...U guessed it right...I am talking about Apple's new 3G iPhone...

In India especially, there is a huge market for second hand phones and Chinese duplicate versions. When iPhone was launched first time by Apple, it became an instant hit everywhere around the world. But since it was on costlier side (Approx. Rs.30000+ in Indian currency), it could be afforded only by either business class people or people in high positions in companies. Surprisingly, it didn't take even months or weeks but just a few days when iPhone came into market with no guarantees or warranties what so ever. These were imports from United States where iPhone was released first. Many people lost huge sums of money in buying these models just in hope that these may work just as good as the original one. There were hacking programs available in market which claimed to break the iPhone lock and make it work on the usual GSM carriers (similar story occurred in China).

And now...here you go...Apple has launched an all new upgraded version of iPhone and that too at less than half the old price (Approx. Rs.8000 - Rs.12500) in two storage versions i.e. 8GB and 16GB capacities. It has come out with more storage, better features and more affordable rates for everybody. Its 3G iPhone...and more

With fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. And like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one — a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser. It redefines what a mobile phone can do — again.

All these features are making the old iPhone users fume as they spent more to get less and now even if they want to resell their models, they will not be able to get even Rs.5000 for the same as the new upgraded 3G iPhone version with 8GB capacity will be just Rs.8000 approx. so why will anybody buy an old one for almost the same price...This justifies the title of this post...
