I should imagine that most you guys reading this know about LugRadio Live. For those who don’t

I should imagine that most you guys reading this know about LugRadio Live. For those who don't (I'm looking at you Sam), go check out the website. Just like the last two years, you'll find me amongst the mass of beards, long hair and O'Reilly books. However - unlike the last two years - all attending will have the opportunity to contribute towards a colaberative artwork, this is where I get involved.

Indeed, I shall be hosting an exhibition during the weekend long event where anyone can walk up, grab a pen, pencil, pastel, paintbrush, prittstick or many other wonderful things begining with 'p', and apply them to a large piece of paper. The aim being to create at least one piece of art produced in a (vaguely) similar fashion to how Open Source software is produced. Seemed like a fun, and reasonably apt idea - and the handsomely large gents over at LugRadio towers appear to have agreed.

The idea behind this originated while I was studying art a sixth form, as for one of the modules I did I could choose anything so long as it could be connected to the subject of "freedom", I believe - something like that... So I chose FOSS, somewhere near the end of the course I remember talking to a friend about how great it would be to produce a piece of artwork in a similar fashion to the collaberative way that FOSS software is developed. Unfortunately, it was too far into the year to actually arrange that. However the idea stuck with me all this time - gently simering in the depths of my brain, like some kind of exqusite stew - and finally I decided to mentioned to the LugRadio guys earlier this year. The idea, not the awful stew analogy.

Anyhow, as much as it pains me to admit, I am only one of many great reasons why you need to attend LugRadio Live UK this year. In addition to the swarths of great speakers at the event - there will also be parties held each night starting on Friday. In addition to this you get to meet loads of great people also exhibiting at the event, talk to people about stuff you're interested in during BoF sessions, see some poor guy in a thong banging on a gong, and - most importantly - shed a tear while whitnessing the very last LugRadio Live live LugRadio.

As it happens, I'm going away to make some final preperations for the exhibit (or rather, eat some tortilla chips and then go do something useful like that). Incidentally, for those who don't know, I'm a big fan of LugRadio and it does feel a little strange that I'm exhibiting at the finale of this cherished thing. Although, at the same time I'm very excited about what might come out of this exhibition.

Don't forget to pop round my table and draw/paint/pen/verb something if you are attending!

Last week it took place in Barcelona (Spain) the 1st Free Knowledge Free Technology (FKFT) conference, where around 200 people involved in FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) and teaching were talking about how FLOSS can come into the classrooms in all the levels, from the school to the university.

In the 3 days that the conference consisted, we had so many different speeches in some others topics. From presentations of official Libre software masters to the rights in of the content in media types now at days. I was there because I am part of the team in NetGenners, one of the projects related with this issue that we were discussing there.

What we could get from there is that the use of FLOSS in the teaching, mostly in the high level (university and masters) is growing and growing because of his facility to be used and studied, due to you have everything online to study it and the added value of a community, either big or small, behind each project. That is one of the reasons that make teachers to introduce this type of software (or other projects not software related such as documentation, …) into the classrooms. And I'm not only talking about university students, also this type of projects is used to continue with the formation of some other professionals that want to improve their knowledge in this technology because they need it or because they like it.

Also the meeting was good to know new people interested in open new projects together big or small collaborations that helps the community to be more active and create a bigger social network working together in different topics of with the same base, the FLOSS in the teaching.

../c-client/c-client.a(osdep.o): In function `ssl_onceonlyinit': /home/cybercolumbuzz/Desktop/imap-2007a/c-client/osdep.c:302: warning: the use of `tmpnam' is dangerous, better use `mkstemp'

mtest.o: In function `smtptest':
/home/cybercolumbuzz/Desktop/imap-2007a/mtest/mtest.c:782: warning: the `gets' function is dangerous and should not be used.

/usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.a(ssl_algs.o): In function `SSL_library_init': ssl_algs.c:(.text+0x1e): undefined reference to `EVP_idea_cbc' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

cybercolumbuzz@blackhole:~/Desktop/imap-2007a$ make slx CC="gcc ${BUILD32}" EXTRACFLAGS="-fPIC" SSLTYPE=unix SHLIBBASE=c-client SHLIBNAME=libc-client.so.1 SSLINCLUDE=/usr/include/openssl SSLLIB=/usr/lib SSLCERTS=/etc/ssl/certs

../c-client/c-client.a(osdep.o): In function `ssl_onceonlyinit':
/home/cybercolumbuzz/Desktop/imap-2007a/c-client/osdep.c:302: warning: the use of `tmpnam' is dangerous, better use `mkstemp'

make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/cybercolumbuzz/Desktop/imap-2007a/tmail'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/cybercolumbuzz/Desktop/imap-2007a'
cybercolumbuzz@blackhole:~/Desktop/imap-2007a$

oui...voila....WELL DONE !!
Happy IMAPing :D

**note : source Makefile hanya saya ubah pada bagian $(BUILD) BUILDTYPE=$@ menjadi $(BUILD) BUILDTYPE=slx
**warning ignored :D

Just a heads-up. The amazing guy over at polarcloud has released the latest version of the popular open sourced, linux based firmware for broadcom based routers. Over time, it has become a lean, mean and easy to use alternative to stock firmware on many routers, and even getting better than other alternatives like DD-WRT.

Tomato is a small, lean and simple replacement firmware for Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 and other Broadcom-based routers. It features a new easy to use GUI, a new bandwidth usage monitor, more advanced QOS and access restrictions, enables new wireless features such as WDS and wireless client modes, raises the limits on maximum connections for P2P, allows you to run your custom scripts or telnet/ssh in and do all sorts of things like re-program the SES/AOSS button, adds wireless site survey to see your wifi neighbors, and more.

Please read the instructions, and make sure you the right version ( the newer ND version is for the Buffalo G125). If you don't know what you are doing, DON'T do it!

Recent buzz about the gPhone being designed by the ADG (Ammunition Design Group) of San Fransisco m

Recent buzz about the gPhone being designed by the ADG (Ammunition Design Group) of San Fransisco may or may not have been confirmed by the honchos of the company, but what is almost certain is Google's unmistakable ambition to enter the mobile web space in a big way. Typically, in a 'googlish style', they want to bring in a game-changing power play. A play that will tilt the market in it's favor much the same way it has done in the field of internet advertising. It has created such a strong force there that even Bill Gates had to praise it as a 'very nice revenue stream'.

So if it really has to be the 'Google' way, the rumor about g-phone being the centerpiece of it, does not sound convincing. There is a philosophical difference in how 'Google' thinks about its businesses than 'Apple'. Google will never be the 'sexy machine' company that will pull users into using it. Rather, it is known for working below the surface and capturing the whole ecosystem under its clutches. So whosoever makes any money in the system, a cut of it is always bound to be directed to Google's coffer. Open Handset Alliance (OHA) or Open Social platform under the 'Android' program is a very definite indicator to that direction.

After Google bought Android in July 2005, Silicon Valley pulsed with gossip and speculation about what the search giant was planning. Everyone figured Apple had a phone in the works and assumed Google must be developing one too...but when Google finally broke its silence in early November, there was nothing about a gPhone. In stead there was a talk of building an alliance of 34 wireless companies including Intel & Sprint Nextel. This was how Google planned to shake up the nearly trillion-dollar global wireless market? A consortium?

Read more about this interesting 'Wired' article here.

Although the importance of the client device, supposedly named gPhone, is equally strategic to Andy Rubin, the original proponent of Android, now in Google; it should not be compared to the i-phone for the fairness' sake.

"The comparison between Android and the iPhone is unfair. The iPhone, with all its glorious UI experience, is a very closed and tightly controlled platform. The promise of Android is not a better user experience but rather an open experience - the sort of stuff that the mobile web really requires at this stage."

With the power of openness, comes the loss of control. But that does not matter as long as the user can fulfill their goal seamlessly rather than worrying about compatibility all the time. Again from the Facebook experience, we have seen users are not willing to trust the third party applications in terms of security and traceability. Google will have to address that problem in a major way if Android has to become the de facto mobile web standard in the near future. They need to carefully trade off how much control to let go and how much to retain, in order to maintain sanity.

Since Mobile web, that is 'always on' and 'always available', scores a major point towards being 'Cloud Computing Ready', Google seems to have big plans to create completely new grounds of business with the launch of Android, particularly in PAAS (Platform as Service) or IAAS (Infrastructure as service). These new offerings will allow anyone to create and launch web applications on Google 'App Engine' hosting service. Even some applications can be custom made by the user communities for very narrow usage bands. And that just may be the beginning of a very different kind of Internet. Sounds too much like Web 3.0? We will have to wait and watch it play out to know the real worth of such ambitious vision...

Torvalds wrote that disclosing the bug itself was enough, without having to label each individual security flaw. He added that taking the bugs to the "security circus" level only glorified the wrong kind of behavior. "It makes heroes out of security people, as if the people who...fix normal bugs aren't as important," wrote Torvalds.

"I think the OpenBSD crowd is a bunch of masturbating monkeys, in that they make such a big deal about concentrating on security to the point where they pretty much admit that nothing else matters to them. To me, security is important. But it's no less important than everything else that is also important!"

The UK Green Building Council has promised an open source sustainability code, to help address the c

The UK Green Building Council has promised an open source sustainability code, to help address the confusion arising from the myriad of different green building standards with a new Code for Sustainable Buildings, joining in the debate / tussle between LEED and BREEAM.

Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK-GBC,: “Industry needs a clear and practical route map and milestones that are aligned with Government policy to give it the confidence and knowledge to move forward on a trajectory to 2019.

UK-GBC Chairman Peter Rogers , “The UK-GBC wants to see very wide take-up of robust and customer-friendly tools, and we believe that the standards at the heart of a new Code for Sustainable Buildings should be ‘open source’, meaning that such a Code could potentially be incorporated into a range of different tools, from a range of providers who could then compete in terms of service provision, without confusing the industry with different standards.”

The concept of open source, is to be welcomed, allowing the code to be incorporated into regional, corporate and community developments, and also allowing other standard bodies, building firms and consultancies to use elements of the code in their own green building guidelines. And it flies in the face of the more closed and commercial approaches from BREEAM and LEED

The final code, which is scheduled to be published in March next year, is expected to mirror the government's Code for Sustainable Homes and as such, will feature wide-ranging rules and guidelines on the metrics and best practices builders should embrace to limit the environmental impact of offices, commercial properties and other non-domestic buildings.

Is there something else here,? Can codes, approaches, tools and technologies which in essence will improve environmental performance, carbon emissions, sustainability generally, and 'save the planet' morally be closed and commercial. The emerging models of wikinomics, freeconomics etc must be applied to sustainability, where the economic model is built upon giving away free 'lead' products.

I would love to see much more open approaches with the built environment sustainability agenda using for example the creative common model.

#!/bin/bash
while [ $# -ge 1 ];
do
case "$1" in
*.[mM][pP]3)
mv "$1" ~/Musica
;;
*.[jJ][pP][gG] | *.[gG][iI][fF])
mv "$1" ~/Imagenes
;;
*.doc | *.[tT][xX][tT])
mv "$1" ~/Documentos
;;
*)
exit 0
;;
esac
shift
done

chmod -R a+x /scripts

After some exploring and googling I found some tricks to get rid of the nasty isapnp errors that prevented my Ubuntu from installing on Virtual PC.

One was solved by disabling the virtual sound card emulation that Virtual PC does by default on evert virtual machine. Uncheck, rerun, voilà.

The other one was not as easy. Googling for "isapnp ubuntu virtual pc" gave me lots of chaff but also some wheat, and I found an obscure forum where somebody reported how decreasing the amount of available RAM for the virtual machine would make the Ubuntu installer continue despite of the isapnp error. So, the error is still there, but the installation continues. So I decreased my virtual machine's RAM from 1 GB to 512 MB, launch, install... and there it flies. Great. But... why does decreasing the RAM make an ISA PnP error be less important?

I had to fiddle a bit with the video settings for the installation, but after a couple of frustrating attempts, I got Ubuntu up and running on a Virtual PC machine. Running? Well, barely.

It does run. In fact, performance is quite nice as compared to Vista. But it is unusable. First of all, the system clock goes ballistic. I mean, I set it to the current time, and after a few seconds it has gone two or three minutes ahead. I can actually see the minutes running on the task bar. Yes, the minutes, not the seconds! Secondly, the keyboard repeat time is so low that pushing any key on my keyboard generates a sequence of 2 to 5 identical letters. I guessed that some setting could be adjusted to improve this, but first I had to log on! So I armed myself with patience and after 6 minutes (not kidding) I managed to type my user name and password at the prompt and be let in. You need to take into account that alphanumeric keys generated a sequence of characters, but the backspace key also generated a "sequence" of back spaces! Anyway. I logged on and found the setting. But even at its minimum, the repeat time is so low that most key strokes generate a couple of characters. Fortunately, there is another setting to disable key repeat altogether. Unfortunately, this also disables the very handy backspace repeat.

Finally, the mouse pointer jumps erratically to a random spot on screen every few seconds. No apparent pattern. It occurs at full screen and running on a window. Odd.

Ubuntu has installed, reluctantly. It is still unusable because of a crazy pointer, a runaway clock and a fastidious keyboard repeat setting. I will continue investigating in my spare time. And reporting. So far, my verdict is still: very substandard.

So I downloaded the current Ubuntu desktop release as an ISO file, created a brand new Virtual PC 2004 virtual machine, and fired up the installation. After a nice menu with some flashy graphics where I choose the option to install Ubuntu, the screen goes blank (i.e. black) and the message:

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

appears on top. Nice. After a few seconds and no perceptible CD or HD activity, it pops up:

[ 40.487708] isapnp: checksum for device 1 is not valid (0x89)
[ 40.495012] isapnp: checksum for device 2 is not valid (0xbe)

And that's it. Nothing happens. 30 minutes later and still the same.

First reaction is to think "bloody Linuxen and their cryptic messages". Second thought is "I knew my mum could not use this. Even I can't use this. What the hell are device 1 and 2? Is the install program continuing or is it hung? What can I do?"

Third reaction is to google for the error message, and by doing this I find multiple reports of people obtaining the same messages as me. Some are related to Ubuntu and some are not. Some occur on top of Virtual PC, some do not. Most list lengthy chunks of boot-up sequences or configuration options. Not for my mum. And not for me.

My first experience with Ubuntu has been short and disappointing. It is not only that it does not install on my machine. It is the fact that it says nothing that can help me diagnose the problem.

The old myth says that Linuxen are hard to install (and use), much harder than Windows. The advocates of OSFS try hard to debunk this myth and convince others that this belongs to the past, and modern Linuxen have the usability of Windows, if not better. Well, I've never seen a Windows installer behaving like what I've just described. And I've seen quite a few of them!

Shame on Ubuntu.
