Drakar & Demoner, 5:e upplagan

Neotech, 2:e upplagan

Vampire: the Masquerade, WoD 1.3

Warhammer Fantasy RolePlay

Kult, 1:a upplagan

Wastelands

Khelataar

Star Trek: the Next Generation, LUG-upplagan

But I just remembered this ad campaign by Chevron. Probably one of the best in recent history. The ones you've all seen are most likely the 30-second versions, but there's a 2:30 full length version. It's executed perfectly. Cineamatography, music, narration, everything.

In this day and age with high gas prices, environmentally conscious people, corporate filth, and just a general dislike for oil companies, Chevron comes out with this brilliant ad campaign to mitigate all of that bad. Check it out.

The QClick QRF300 is the newest addition to the other great Qomo solutions.

[wp_caption id="attachment_691" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="QClick QRF300"][/wp_caption]

I was quite impressed with the Qomo teacher and student Interactive Wireless Audience Response units -- QClick, The hardest part about using these clickers was the presentation sample questions at the Qomo booth at NECC. The teacher clicker was a no-brainer and the student devices were upraised, so you knew where your thumb was on the clicker at all times. Qomo's software for the QClick integrates with PowerPoint, and allows teachers to assess student progress, and even take spot polls during lessons.

Different modes include quiz, exam, homework, rush quiz, vote, ad-lib quiz, hand raise and roll call.

Qomo's QScope Microscope projection connection was a cool solution as well. I asked about a binocular one, but it's not part of their line-up.

These were the presentations at the Qomo booth. To the far right (below) is the projection from the microscope presenter. It can be connected by USB (QS-U100/QS-U110) or direct video output (QS-C100) using any devices capable of receiving composite video signals. The QS-U100 (USB model) does not require a power supply.

My original time slot for demoing the prototype was 20 minutes. I was sure of nailing down the prese

My original time slot for demoing the prototype was 20 minutes. I was sure of nailing down the presentation and demo in that time. However, surprise surprise! I got 10 minutes at the end.

Elevator pitches are common in the entrepreneurship community. This is one thing every entrepreneur is advised to practice. The idea is to impress the listener in about 30 seconds.

While it is not required to be that strict here, I think every presentation (to decision makers) must start with an elevator pitch of 3 minutes. In this three minutes, you should awe them with your talk and then demonstrate your prototype or product idea or beta versions...This I call TMP (Three minute punch)

When you get to talk to the VPs or on their schedule, firstly it means that your work is big and sexy enough to warrant their time. Now this itself puts you in a dominant position. Your TMP can take advantage of this fact and start with the most bold opening statement you can make!

Consider the following statement:

"Thanks for your time. Today, I am going to show you how we have solved the _foo_bar_ problem everybody in our organization is talking about. Not only have we solved it, but we have reduced it to practice and created methodologies for everybody to adopt this in their projects".

The above is one of the boldest statements you can make. The more everyone in your organization is scratching their heads over the _foo_bar_ problem, the more powerful the above statement is going to be for you. This will make your audience (in this case, upper management) open their ears, lean forward, stop checking email and pay attention to you.

Your TMP does not need to contain background of the problem. Everybody knows it and hence, you can skip it. If nobody knows about this problem, you are not even going to be there presenting before your VP. Instead, build it up...restate the biggest challenges and emphasize that you have solved them. This creates a curiosity or the "how factor". Then give a demo. This nails down your point.

This is just one way..There might be several others. I would love to hear them from you.

On Wednesday, July 9th, I'll be giving a talk at the North Dallas .NET User Group called "Refactoring to Patterns (Not the Book)". It's not going to be some dry, academic talk with and bunch of UML and "Hello World" examples but an example using "real world" code like what you and I work with in our every day lives. The main patterns we'll focus on for this web application are Model-View-Presenter and Adapter. My intent is to show the things that I've discovered in journey towards better, more maintainable code and provide ways to apply that knowledge in a realistic fashion. This is going to be a code intensive talk and, hopefully, a very interactive one.

Here's the sign up form - I hope to see you there.

We can hardly contain our excitement. Tomorrow my family leaves for a week long trip to Disney World.

We have been preparing for this moment for years. We have saved up the money, booked and planned our trip extensively. We searched websites for tips on how to get the most out of our money, time and energy (The 3 currencies that we all have available to us). We have planned how we were going to get there (Southwest Airlines http://www.southwest.com/, where we are going to stay http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdwi/en_CA/resorts/resortLanding?id=AllStarSportsResortLandingPage , what theme parks we are going to visit, and even which restaurants we are going to eat in.(Because you have to book 180 days in advance to get reservations to some restaurants).

In fact, we have spent almost as much energy planning for this trip as we did for our wedding (17 years ago). And you may be asking yourself why have we spent so much time and energy into planning for this trip?

The reason we have invested so much into the planning of this experience is that we want to have the best time. We have tried to plan for and eliminate all of the things that could possibly go wrong, in order for us to have a fantastic (and memorable) experience.

So all this planning got me thinking.

Why don't we put the same effort into delivering a killer sales presentation or a speech?

The truth is that the pros do.

They invest time / energy / money into preparing in order to eliminate all the things that could possibly go wrong.

According to David Peoples, in his awesome book Presentations Plus http://www.amazon.ca/Presentations-Plus-Peoples-Proven-Techniques/dp/0471559563,

"95% of how well your presentation is going to go will be determined before you even begin."

And I say that, "Increased Preparation leads to Increased Confidence and Increased Confidence leads to Increased Success."

So think about how you are going to prepare for your next presentation.

Think about how you are going to Prepare your Material.

Think about how you are going to Prepare the Environment.

And think about how you are going to Prepare for the Moment.

I will go into more detail on these topics (and lessons learned from Disney World) in future blogs.

As for now, my family and I have a date with Mickey Mouse and we are prepared to have an awesome experience. So as Tigger says, "TTFN (Tah, tah for now)

SAFARI Montage's Managed Home Access feature will permit teachers and students to access SAFARI Montage from their homes. It will allow teachers to have home access for planning lessons, and schools to upload original video content for parents' viewing. Districts will be able to stream school plays, school board meetings, football games, special presentations, superintendent and principal addresses.

The Managed Home Access feature is fully integrated with the SAFARI Montage system.
SAFARI Montage Streamer is the new dedicated server, which hosts the video files to be streamed and accessed anywhere outside that district.

More about this digital management solution:

Playlists allow teachers to pre-plan multi-media lessons by stringing together video clips to play back at a later time. Teachers can share play lists with one another as well.

SAFARI Montage is designed to work with a district's bandwidth -- whatever it is. District's with fiber optic set ups may go with a centrally located server, while T1 districts may require a server in each school with all talking to a central server. In this way a district's already pressed daily bandwidth isn't overworked further.

SAFARI Montage has integration with whiteboards, including Promethean's Activboard.

Other features include searchable metadata, Spanish language track, and correlation to state standards.

SAFARI Montage LIVE is a desktop to desktop videoconferencing solution for distance learning, homebound students, and presentations by guest speakers. Beside video, users can text chat and share files.

I did a 2-day presentation to a group in Virginia Beach last week. The topic is a rather dry one - how to stay in compliance with environmental laws andregulations. Instead of giving the audience a copy of the presentation material at the beginning, I gave each attendee a 4-page summary containing 3 key points to remember for each of the 11 sessions. There is room on the handout for them to take their own notes and to add more points to remember. At the end of the 2-day conference, I gave each participant a copy of a CD that contains a 400-page PDF document that is both searchable and printable. This document has all the topics that I covered in technical detail.

The arrangement worked out remarkably well. The attendees were able to take notes AND pay attention to the presentation. There was nothing for them to read ahead of my presentation so they focused on the presentation.

By the way - no one fell asleep. Many just noticed the presentation was "more refreshing" than the usual presentations they had been exposed to. They just enjoyed it. They didn't even noticed there were no bullet points until I pointed that out to them.

Though I haven't blogged for some time again ....... and I have more than six drafts almost ready to publish, I just had to slip this one in before the others because it is sooo interesting. For some time now I and my wife, who works in another branch of education, have been playing around with tools for presenting training materials via the web. Vicki has been having quite a lot of success using Articulate Presenter which outputs in a neat Flash based player that can also accommodate attachments amongst other attributes. We have also used a number of other screen capture tools to capture with narration screen navigation.

It was interesting then to read about Flowgram which is in Beta now but promises great things methinks. The output is flash based and allows the presenter to use annotated live web pages. The pages are completely active however the presenter is able to direct the users attention to anywhere on the page through the use of highlights. In addition other content such as digital images and movie content via YouTube, or where schools are concerned TeacherTube or the like can be referenced. The whole presentation can be narrated and embedded into other webpages including Web 2.0 spaces. The embed file shows as a series of images in a slide show format which when clicked opens up the flash based player and the presentation. Very interesting indeed.

As Wordpress.com doesn't enable Flash without specific widgets an example of Flowgram from Joi Ito can be found here. At present the 1000 “tester” spots offered have been filled but you can register an interest or take in the Flowgram blog.

As an educator I am particularly interested in the tools within wordpress that students could use to present their own work... with an overview of thumbnail images and then an online journal/sketchbook. Having the overview and the linear journal is important because the new GCSE specifications demand that the onus is placed on students to present their work- and the ability to have an overview is important for external moderators.

Assessment Objective 4 (A04) for both AQA and Edexcel draft specifications for the New GCSE in Art and Design, “Present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating critical understanding, realising intentions and where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral or other elements”

AQA GCSE in Art and Design Draft
http://www.aqa.org.uk/qual/newgcse/pdf/AQA-4200-W-SP-11.PDF

Edexcel GCSE in Art and Design Draft 1 September 2008-07-04
http://www.edexcel.com/gcse2009/art/Pages/Overview.aspx

As the assessment is currently set out in the specifications (although AQA have been instructed by QCA to increase mark range) the top level performance descriptors for AO4 are as follows:

Edexcel…
Fluent 17-20 work is intuitive, imaginative, exciting and original with highly appropriate research connections shows sophistication, flair and understanding; technique, style, content and judgements consistent and sensitive from conception to realisation

AQA…
13-15 A confident and highly competent ability to present a personal, informed and meaningful response when realising intentions. A confident and highly developed ability to demonstrate critical understanding and where appropriate make discriminating connections between visual, written, oral or other elements.

Presentation becomes something that the students must consider and the ‘art teacher’ displaying work in an exhibition seems to be less relevant… although I love exhibitions and think that they are still very valuable in terms of celebrating achievement and learning new skills.

At a recent meeting I attended the use of online and digital portfolios were discussed as methods of ‘presenting’ work. Certain limitations regarding an assessor’s ability to mark the body of work ‘as a whole’ were discussed.

Thinking about this problem I would point people to Wessex Archaeology's fantastic site that enables viewers to see their work in a number of forms-
In a linear fashion (like a traditional journal or sketchbook)
Thematically (either by topic or ‘tag’)

http://news.wessexarch.co.uk/photos/

As I didn't have the IT smarts to do this (or I perceived this to be the case) I had signed myself up for a course through Graft, taught by Brenda Burrell and Pete Hindle who demonstrated the potential of using wordpress.

We were based in the Polytechnic opensource lab adjacent to the Star and Shadow.

I now feel quite confident that I can help facilitate a students use of wordpress to create a digital portfolio. Smashing.

When it comes to attracting a romantic partner a lot of factors can come into play, but the first on

When it comes to attracting a romantic partner a lot of factors can come into play, but the first one to be noticed is usually physical appearance. As I've gotten to know more older gay men I've come to notice a number of common mistakes when it comes to personal presentation. In this post I'll share some of the mistakes I've observed and examine what makes them an appearance no-no. Keep in mind, whether you're just interested in a partner for pelvic pinochle or you're in it for the long haul, proper personal presentation can start you off on the right foot.

The following are seven aspects of your appearance you should consider. The fashion considerations here don't necessarily need to be applied to all aspects of your life, but should be applied when going out on a date or to functions where you're likely to meet other available men. (or when you're taking photos for that dating site you just joined). I have listed them, roughly, in order of increasing importance. If your having real trouble getting that cute young guy to pay any attention to you, perhaps you should skip to the bottom.

Accessories:

1. Glasses don't have to be a detriment to your looks; they can even work to your advantage. Let's face it, after we turn 40 our eyesight begins to go downhill. So, if you're an older guy you're probably sporting a pair of spectacles. This in and of itself shouldn't be a concern, younger guys interested in the older crowd are going to expect this and will likely find glasses attractive anyway. That said, try to let the glasses you choose work for you. As a general rule smaller frames are better and choose a shape that contrasts slightly with the shape of your face; this can make you look smart and progressive. I've seen too many men with huge round frames that overwhelm their face.

2. Hat's haven't been a fashion necessity since the 1950s, but that doesn't mean there aren't different hats for different jobs. Do not use baseball caps as all purpose head wear. I know they're easy, and they're fine for outdoor activities or informal situations. However, I've seen men wear them while wearing a suit. If you're going anywhere remotely nicely dressed, consider a more formal style of hat or none at all. It is understandable that many older men use hats to protect bald or balding heads, but do not rely on a hat to cover up the fact that your hair is thinning. More on that subject later. Finally, it is still polite to remove you're hat while indoors, especially when eating or visiting someone's home.

3. Men's jewelry should be pretty innocuous, limited to a small number of understated pieces. Older gay men that abuse the use of jewelry seemingly fall into one of two groups: the pompous show-off playboy wannabe or the oblivious camp queen. If you're wealthy you don't have to show it off by draping yourself in jewelry. One or two choice items can express both your status and your good taste. On the other hand, if your tastes trend toward the eccentric and you're on the look out for a younger guys I'd recommend tempering some of those tendencies. Limit yourself to a single unique piece, you'll still express your personality but potential mates will be more likely to perceive you as quirky and fun rather than over the top.

Clothing:

4. Choose your wardrobe carefully, carelessness or apathy in choosing cloths can do a lot to diminish your physical appearance. We all like to throw on a comfy pair of jeans and an old polo shirt, but that just doesn't cut it when you're trying to attract someone. When shopping for new clothes make sure to only purchase things that fit properly; make sure the shoulders are the right width, shirts conform but aren't too tight around the torso, pant waists are the right measurement, etc. Baggy or ill fitted clothes make you look as though you're either sloppy or you're trying to hide physical flaws. However, well fitted clothes, through the structure they provide, will enhance your better features but generally diminish flaws. When in doubt find a clothing retailer with knowledgeable clerks, they can help you find a fit that is right for your body and you can then apply what you learn when you shop at other establishments. It may also help to look at men's fashion magazines, you don't necessarily need to go for the high end clothes they're modeling, but you can often find great hints on what's in style and how to find a better fit.

5. Dress in age appropriate clothing. If their's anything worse than someone who is oblivious to fashion, it is the older gay man that tries too hard to be fashionable. It is one thing to appear youthful for your age but some older gay men take this too far. I knew one gentleman in his 70s that wore tight printed t-shirts and heavily distressed jeans. This was an outfit expected out of a 30-something and may have been pulled off successfully by a fit 50-something but for this septuagenarian this trendy look really wasn't working. He was a pleasant guy, in good shape, but such an attempt at youthful fashion wreaked of desperation. Dress nicely, find a style that complements your features and personality, but take care not to over reach toward being overly trendy.

Grooming:

6. Gray hair is sexy, please leave it just the way it is. Many men desperately attempt to hang on to youth as they age. One of the quickest, easiest, and most obvious ways they do this is by dying their hair. Unfortunately, dying one's hair is also one of the quickest and easiest ways to reveal one's own vanity and/or insecurity in their looks. Both of which are big turn-offs. Accept you're graying hair, wear it with confidence, and you just might be rewarded with a young man running his fingers through them. If you do insist on dying your hair, keep in mind that course facial hair requires stronger dyes and so dyes more evenly and thus less natural looking than the hair on top of your head. You may want to lose the beard or mustache if you decide to keep your "natural" color on top of your head.

7. That hair piece isn't fooling anyone. Much like the graying older man, the balding older man often wishes to deny the reality that, gasp, male pattern baldness is common in our species. Bald heads, like gray hair, can also be very sexy. Sean Connery anyone? Unfortunately, compensating for baldness through toupees or hair plugs is generally even less convincing than dyed hair. The fact that bald men cling on to their pieces though their friends, family, neighbors, dental hygienists, and anyone else that may happen to meet them that isn't blind knows that they are bald illustrates the state of delusional self-denial some of these men can be in. If you are a bald or balding man it is ultimately best that you come to terms with that fact, accept it, and be honest to the rest of the world. Ultimately others will respect you more for it.

Closing Thoughts:

As I reflect on this post I have noticed that my list of common mistakes reflect two major themes. First, young men looking at potential older partners aren't necessarily looking for physical perfection, at least not as it is commonly defined in our culture. But, they are more likely to me attracted to a man that attends to their looks. In part, self cultivation creates a more attractive package, but it also expresses a certain level of self assurance which in itself can be sexy. That leads us into the second theme. Older men often employ certain strategies to maintain their youthfulness that can be excessive or superficial. These strategies reveal insecurity and express a sense of desperation. Confidence and self-acceptance are really what men are looking for. We may desire certain physical traits, but they're even more sexy when someone is comfortable in their own body.

I want to leave you with one final anecdote. My partner told me that he once confided in his son that he was considering getting hair plugs. (Yes, my partner is a sexy bald man.) His son responded "Oh dad, don't do that you'll be just like all those other tired old queens. Spend that money on a personal trainer." Fortunately, my partner took his son's advice. He started eating better, taking care of his skin, getting more physically active, and at times uses a personal trainer to focus his workout routine. Rather than taking the quick fix he took pride in himself and his body. When I look at old photos of him and compare that with how he is now, it's not just the physical changes that are obvious but also that change in attitude. I respect my partner's strong sense of self and it is one of the things that first made me so attracted to him.
