In 1898, the French writer Emile Zola wrote an open letter to the then French president in the news

In 1898, the French writer Emile Zola wrote an open letter to the then French president in the newspaper L’Aurore, titled j’accuse (‘I accuse’), where he accused the French government of anti- Semitism towards Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer unfairly condemned for treason.

Now it is time for the people of India to say openly that which many, including within the Congress, think secretly and may utter in the privacy of their chambers.

It is not about Manmohan Singh, it is not even about Shivraj Patil, the fall guy; it is about that one person, the Eminence Grise of India. She who pulls all the strings, She whose shadow looms menacingly over so many, She who holds no portfolio, is just a simple elected MP, like 540 others, but rules like an empress.

Sometimes, one’s very physical presence at the top is enough to move things, to influence the course of events. One word from Her, a glance, a frown, are enough to put the whole heavy, inert, unwilling machinery of India’s bureaucracy and political system in full motion. Sometimes She need not say anything: in the true tradition of Bhakti, Her ministers, Her secretaries, interpret Her silences and rush to cater to Her western and Christian identity.

Nevertheless, she has said and acted enough so that one day she may stand accused on the pages of History for what she must have done to India.I’accuse Sonia Gandhi as being responsible for the tragedy of Mumbai, having emasculated India’s intelligence agencies by stopping them from investigating terror attacks in the last four years, including the Mumbai train blasts. She has also neutralised the ATS by ordering them at all costs to ferret out ‘Hindu terrorism’, which if it exists, has wrought minuscule damage compared to what Islamic terror has done since 2004. Did the US send a warning to India that there may be an attack on Mumbai and that the Taj would be one of the targets? Were these ignored because the ATS was too busy chasing Hindu ‘terrorists’ on Sonia’s orders?

I accuse Sonia and her government of having made the NSG the laughing stock of the world. How many times did the NSG (who took ten hours to reach Mumbai) claim that it had “sanitised the Taj and that the operation was over” and how many times did a bomb go off immediately after? For the last 20 years, the NSG has guarded VIPs and has become soft. See the comments of Israeli terror specialists, who said the NSG should have first sanitised the immediate surroundings of the places of conflict, kept the bystanders and press (who gave terrorists watching TV in the Taj rooms a perfect report of the security forces’ whereabouts) out of the place, gathered enough information about the position of the terrorists and hostages before taking action, instead of immediately engaging the terrorists, and ensuring the deaths of so many hostages.

I accuse Sonia of having let her Christian and Western background, in four years, divide India on religious and caste lines in a cynical and methodical manner.

I accuse Sonia of weakening India’s spirit of sacrifice and courage, so that 20 terrorists (or less) held at ransom the financial capital of India for more than three days.I accuse Sonia Gandhi of always pointing the finger at Pakistan, when terrorism in India is now mostly homegrown, even if it takes help, training, refuge and arms from Pakistan; of not warning Indians of the grave dangers of Islamic terror for cynical election purposes.

I accuse Sonia of being an enemy of the Hindus, who always gave refuge to persecuted minorities, and who are the only people in the world to accept that God may manifest under different names, in different epochs, using different scriptures.

I accuse Sonia Gandhi of taking advantage of India’s respect for women, its undue fascination with the Gandhi name, and its stupid mania for White Skin.

I’accuse Sonia of exploiting the Indian Press’ obsession with her. She hardly ever gave interview in 20 years, except scripted ones to NDTV, yet the Press always protects her, never blames her and keeps silent over her covert role.

I’accuse Sonia and her government of trying to make heroes of subservient and inefficient men to hide the humiliation of Mumbai 26/11. Before going to his death, Hemant Karkare, the ATS chief, was shown on television clumsily handling his helmet, as someone who uses it very rarely. Why did he die of bullet wounds in the chest when he was wearing a bullet-proof vest? Either Indian vests are inferior quality or he was not wearing one.

How did the terrorists who killed him and his fellow officer escape in the same vehicle used by the ATS chief ? Why did he and his officers go into Cama Hospital without ascertaining where the terrorists were? We honour his death, but these facts say a lot about the ATS’ battle-readiness.

Will someone in the Congress, someone who feels more Indian than faithful to Sonia, stand up and speak the truth? Who said, “Go after Hindu terrorists”? Who insisted on putting pressure on BJP governments in Karnataka or Orissa for so-called persecution of Christians, when Christians have always practised their faith in total freedom here, while their missionaries are converting hundreds of thousands of innocent tribals and Dalits with the billions of dollars given by gullible westerners? Who said, “Go soft on Islamic terrorism”? Who wants to do away with India’s nuclear deterrence in the face of Pakistani and Chinese nuclear threats, by pushing at all costs the one sided Indo-US nuclear deal, which makes no secret of its intention to denuclearise India militarily?

I am sure Sonia Gandhi has good qualities: she probably was a good wife to Rajiv, a good daughter in law to Indira and by all accounts, she is a good mother to her children. One also hears first-hand reports about her concern for smaller people, her dignity in the suffering that befell her when her husband was blown to pieces, and her courtesy with visitors.

Nevertheless, she is a danger to India.

Her very presence, both physical and occult, open the doors to forces inimical to India. Even Indian Christians should understand that she is not a gift to them: her presence at the top has emboldened fanatics like John Dayal or Valson Thampu, who practise an orthodox Christianity prevalent in the West in the early 20th century, but no longer, to radicalise their flock. Indian Christians should recognise that they have a much better deal here than Christians or Hindus have in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia or Saudi Arabia.

Under Sonia’s rule, Indian Muslims, too, have been used as electoral pawns. They have been encouraged to shun the Sufi streak, a blend of the best of Islam and Vedanta, for a hard-line Sunni brand imported from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

For the good of India, her civilisation, her immense spirituality and culture, Sonia Gandhi has to go and a government that thinks Indian, breathes nationalism and will protect its citizens must be voted to power.

Last sunday I got on the plane to Milan in order to attend Adobe Max Milan 2008, together with my colleagues Wim and Wannes and with Dimitri ( co-manager adobe usergroup and former classmate ). We were representing Boulevart as one of the Max Award Finalists in the develop category. As the only mobile entry that made it into the european finals we were already very proud of how far we got, together with our partner Barefoot.

The Wim Vanhenden Challenge

Sunday evening we announced the winners of our Shootemup contest, during the Adobe Usergroup Meeting that was hosted in our Hotel. I also informed the ( surprisingly large ) audience about the Wim Vanhenden Challenge that was going on at the Boulevart offices. Wim’s initiative to let us cut off his long rockstar hair if we won the award, resulted in a lot more than just a wild promise. A before and after picture was created, a facebook group was set up, the blogging started and a complete email campaign got orchestrated. That’s what I call working as a Boulevart Group!

We would like to thank everybody who voted for us and are very honoured to be part of such an active and open-minded community. If they were not laughing at Wim they were sending emails to their colleagues at home, asking them to vote for Boulevart. We really appreciate that guys!

Meet the finalists

On Monday we had the opportunity to showcase our mobile entry at the Adobe Community Lounge. We got a booth of our own where people could have a talk, drink or just take a look at our Rock Werchter guide running on the iphone. It was nice to meet the other finalists, have a talk with community members and of course enjoying an adobe sponsored meal! Well actually, Adobe was providing breakfast, lunch and dinner for all attendees, together with hot and cold drinks. No need to run out of energy at Max!

The 2008 Max Award Show

On Tuesday evening it finally began. After going to the rehearsal, Boulevart was ready for the Max Award Show. Having no clue who was going to win we were getting more and more excited & curious. It was definately on our mind this could turn out into Wim’s last moments as a long-haired rockstar. What happened then was probably the most amazing and exciting moment in my career so far. Check out the video to be part of it:

Brian Paddick has reportedly been refusing to do any press since leaving the jungle unless he is paid £10,000 for the privilege. This is the most absurd think I’ve heard, these celebrities arefame whores who are trying to squeeze every penny out of their 15 minutes… And to think this man ran for Mayor of London.

A greedy greedy wimpish man

You may be thinking Brian is right to ask for more money to do press, but please bare in mind that despite the credit crunch these celebrities are paid thousands of pounds to be on the show and this fee does include related press. The celebrities also get unrelated endorsement deals/press offers (Kerry Katona - Iceland) where they can get fees into the millions.

I doubt this will happen to Briam as he has been a complete wuss the whole show and has a very unlikable trait in his character.

All she has done is … change the world, at least for some people in need in Collin County.

As executive director of the Samaritan Inn, the county’s only homeless shelter, Lynne Sipiora marshals the task of providing food, shelter, counseling and the possibility of a better future to folks many would rather forget. And on April 9, she fulfilled the goal of opening Gateway Apartments in McKinney, the county’s first transitional housing unit for homeless people.

For that achievement, she deserves this nomination for the 2008 Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year.

Think for one moment what Gateway represents to its residents: For the first time in ages, 20 families (and more in the future) can re-emerge into society as functional, productive citizens with a regained sense of dignity after so much pain and loss. Without Lynne’s initiative and oversight, it would never have become a reality.

She hoisted this challenge on her shoulders and willed Gateway’s completion, doing it without one red cent from the government. She found the perfect silent partner in Dallas philanthropist Marc Sparks, who entirely funded the construction and property purchase; got the builders, Darling Bros., to work at cost; and convinced numerous businesses, churches, social groups and individuals to sponsor aspects of the everyday Gateway regimen.

Lynne’s daily task at the Inn is difficult enough; each resident has a sad story behind their predicament. There is the added heartbreak of turning away others (including families with children) due to lack of space and resources. This work can crush most normal spirits and souls, but she always prevails.

Add to this Lynne’s backbreaking schedule of meetings, speeches and fundraising activities – as well as the role of mother and wife, at which she also excels.

“Sometimes it’s pretty overwhelming, but I love my job; it is my passion,” she once wrote me. Her work earned her the 2007 Executive Director of the Year award from the Texas Homeless Network – and that was before Gateway opened.

Lynne now has her sights focused on the next logical step – more beds, plus a homeless children’s day care center. Only a foolish person would bet against her.

Most people know there is no definitive face of “the homeless.” They come from all cross-sections of society. Too often, they are mirror images of ourselves – people who worked hard, followed the rules and searched for the American dream.

However, a stumble here, an illness there, or a divorce that leaves one former spouse without means … and things get out of control. The problem in these rough economic times is only becoming more acute, and the services of the Samaritan Inn will be needed more than ever.

If, for whatever reason fate decides, should it be you or I who faces such tribulations, and you need that dreaded four-letter word “help,” the person you need at your side is Lynne Sipiora – to change your world.

David Parirenyatwa, the health minister, is saying there was a critical shortage of resources for dealing with the crisis.”Our central hospitals are literally not functioning. Our staff is demotivated and we need your support to ensure that they start coming to work and our health system is revived,” Parirenyatwa was reported as saying.

The UN humanitarian office estimates the death toll from a deadly cholera outbreak at 565 people, with Harare, the capital, the worst affected.Cholera, which brings on diarrhoea that can fast lead to severe dehydration and death, is preventable and treatable under normal circumstances. But Zimbabwe’s health sector is collapsing, with not enough money to pay for essential resources, while doctors and nurses often strike over pay.

Harare residents suffered a crippling 48 hour water cut, after the state-run water company ran short of aluminium sulphate, a chemical used to purify water, on Saturday. But Mzembi warned his ministry only had water treatment chemicals to last about 12 weeks, and called for donor support, the Herald reported.”I am appealing for at least 40 million rand [$3.89m] to purchase chemicals for the next two months and the money is needed between now and next Monday,” The Herald quoted him as saying. The Zimbabwe government also appealed for $450m in aid to deal with food shortages.

Zimbabwe is suffering the world’s highest inflation, officially estimated at 231 million per cent, unemployment of more than 80 per cent and dire food, water and fuel shortages.

(click the link for the full story). In particular it was nice to mention that we saw it coming. not that that is all that special, give the massive issues we are now facing.

Thursday, December 04, 2008 By GINA HANNAH Times Business Writer gina.hannah@htimes.com

Larger inventory, tight credit contribute to fall

After months of maintaining a somewhat even keel, Huntsville’s housing market now appears to be on track with national trends, with home sales plunging nearly 40 percent from last year.

The Huntsville Area Association of Realtors reported 276 homes sold in Madison County in November, down from 460 in the same month last year and down 25 percent from October.

Saw it coming

For months, the Huntsville market has seen only slight declines in sales - between 13 percent and 16 percent - compared with other parts of the country. Tom Brander of Birmingham-based Rudulph/Brander Real Estate Statistical Reports said sales data he observed in October led him to believe Huntsville’s relatively healthy market could be changing.

Rudulph/Brander collects data from multiple-listing services for the Huntsville, Birmingham and coastal Alabama markets, which it provides to large banks, developers and brokers. Brander said when he calculated October aggregate sales in the Huntsville metropolitan area, which includes Limestone, Morgan, Marshall and Jackson counties and Athens and Gadsden, he noticed a drop of 21 percent from September’s total sales, from $142 million to $112 million, and a 31 percent drop from October 2007.

“Huntsville no longer appears to be doing better, and the trends are ominous,” Brander said in a report last month. He said he believes Huntsville-area sales could drop to 2002-2004 levels before recovering because of increases in inventory, particularly in the higher price ranges.

“New houses over $400,000 are over a year (in inventory) and some price ranges are approaching three years of inventory,” he said.

Inventory is calculated by dividing the number of homes listed for sale in a month by the number sold that month. The result shows, at the present rate, how long it would take to sell every listed home.

“It’s probably going to get worse because the newer houses are skewed toward the higher price ranges.”

Homes under $300,000 have been selling more quickly than more expensive homes, he said, and the competition between new homes and existing but fairly new homes with motivated buyers is fierce.

“The used home (inventory) impacts the new, because builders have fixed costs, but owners have to sell their homes,” he said. “You can get very good deals on used houses.”

Thirty years after Alexandros Panagoulis died and fourty years after his attempt to kill the Greek dictator, a new book named “Alexandros Panagoulis: Leader of the revolution” was written by his collaborators and was introduced to the public.

A special citation to his poetic work brought back to light how he wrote his poetry on the walls of his cell or on small papers, often using his own blood as ink (as told in the poem ‘The Paint’).

While in prison his first collection in Italian titled Altri seguiranno: poesie e documenti dal carcere di Boyati (Others will Follow: Poetry and Documents of the Prison of Boyati) was published in Palermo in 1972 with an introduction of the Italian politician Ferruccio Parri and the Italian film director and intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini.

For this collection Panagoulis was awarded the Viareggio International Prize of Poetry (Premio Viareggio Internazionale) the following year.

Ciaoo, Steven.

Again, the Kenyan press disappoints. Hysterics, as usual, are their Achilles heel. This I write with an eye on yesterday’s (December 3rd) editorial on the Kenya Communications Bill 2007 in the Daily Nation. The article is meant to generate sympathy for the country’s media establishment because of their impending muzzling by said bill. However, it comes out a complete mess. A section about how The Nation’s reading of the new bill is “quite telling” crashes into another about the “very oppressive and scary clauses” developed by the bill’s authors. Still, it is some mutterings about new restrictions on cross-media ownership and Government provisions to seize media equipment during emergencies that just turns the entire argument tiresome.

First of all, let no one say that I’m speaking blindly in favour of this proposed law. I am a firm believer in the independence of the press and in free expression for all; there isn’t any room for the growth of a strong democracy otherwise. I do believe, though, that the press has an obligation to report on the pressing issues of the day in a clear, objective and accessible manner. Such exposition in turn enables the consuming public to gain a good understanding of its world, to hold its elected leaders to task, and to participate in shaping the country’s policy agenda.

Whenever the debate on whether the government is working to stifle the press is raised, inevitable clamouring from within the media about the legislature’s foul play follows. Sure, I agree that we are led by self-serving members of parliament who are only too keen to pull a fast one on the populace whenever we look away even for the briefest moment. But I would venture to say that our news comes from self-serving editorial boards which are interested solely in securing their freedom to keep broadcasting, whether their product is relevant to the consumer or not (it isn’t). I believe that our press has become just as bad as our political establishment: old, disconnected from reality, and concerned only with political expediency.

The Nation says that the Kenya Communications Bill 2007 leaves a lot to be desired. I say the Kenyan press leaves a lot to be desired. Is it too much to ask our newspaper editors for clear, bullet-proof analysis of bills pertaining to communications and press freedom, and while we’re on the matter, of anything that is printed in their pages? Can editors keep speculation and wild gesticulation about imagined terrors that live only in their heads out of their newsrooms, leaving only the distilled, cold, hard fact that we so badly need? Call me a difficult person, but I hate to think I’m throwing away 35 bob daily on a so-called serious newspaper.
