Our summer reading club will start June 9. Babies, toddlers, kids, and teens can register starting that day, and I'm really excited about the changes in the club this summer. There is no minimum amount to read -- kids just put a sticker on a calendar for any day they read. When they have 25 stickers on their calendar, they can come in and collect their prizes.

We have some really great programs at the library this summer too. The program schedule is now available, both in the library and online.

I subscribe to the Worldwatch Institute's weekly e-mail newsletter, which provides independent news, research, fact-based analysis and tips on critical global issues, particurly eco / green / sustainable issues.

This week's email newsletter included a fantastic "10 Ways to Go Green and Save Green" list.

We had planned to teach some of these practical tips at our April "Pick Two You Can Do" Retreat at Turtle Rock Farm here in Oklahoma, which we have currently postponed. (Click here to read my original entry about this retreat.)

One of my personal favorites is Number 10, Make your own cleaning supplies. Making your own effective, non-toxic cleaning supplies is so easy to do with just baking soda, vinegar, and lemon and saves money, time, packaging, and improves indoor air quality.

If you're interested in participating in our "Pick Two You Can Do" ecospirituality-retreat at Turtle Rock Farm, visit our website and send us an email or simply comment here and we'll make sure to reschedule the retreat for a date that works for you!

Back in November of 2006, I wrote a piece about the One Laptop Per Child Project. I was afraid that the project's focus on creating a whole new paradigm (the Sugar UI) would ultimately intervene with the actual goal of the project: teaching stuff to kids. Ivan Krstic, former director of security architecture at OLPC, wrote an essay in which he heavily criticises the OLPC project.

Krstic wrote his essay in response to the news that the OLPC might become Windows-only, with the Sugar interface ported to it. In the essay, he gives several points of criticism that seem to reflect what many others (including Eugenia and myself) have been saying for a long time now.

Firstly, he doubts the usefulness of constructionism as a learning theory. The constructionist part of the OLPC project is more or less the open source part: users can fix, improve, and translate the software themselves, which will aid massively in the learning process. While Krstic appreciates the "bright-eyed idealism", there simply appears to be no facts backing it all up. "No, we don't know that laptop recipients will benefit from fixing software on their laptops. Indeed, I bet they'd largely prefer the damn software works and doesn't need fixing."

As far as I know, there is no real study anywhere that demonstrates constructionism works at scale. There is no documented moderate-scale constructionist learning pilot that has been convincingly successful; when Nicholas points to "decades of work by Seymour Papert, Alan Kay, and Jean Piaget", he's talking about theory. [...] There sure as hell doesn't exist a peer-reviewed study (or any other kind, to my knowledge) showing free software does any better than proprietary software when it comes to aiding learning, or that children prefer the openness, or that they care about software freedom one bit.

Later on in the essay, Krstic dives a little deeper into the philosophical issue of whether or not the entire software stack must be open source. He writes:

At the end of the day, it just doesn't matter to the educational mission what kernel is running Sugar. If Sugar itself remains open and free - which, thus far, has never been in question - all of the relevant functionality such as the 'view source' key remains operational, on Windows or not. OLPC should never take steps to willingly limit the audience for its learning software. Windows is the most widely used operating system in existence. A Windows-compatible Sugar would bring its rich learning vision to potentially tens or hundreds of millions of children all over the world whose parents already own a Windows computer, be it laptop or desktop. To suggest this is a bad course of action because it's philosophically impure is downright evil.

Krstic also quotes Richard Stallman. Stallman equated teaching children to use proprietary software to introducing children to addictive drugs. This got Krstic riled up pretty badly. "If proprietary software is half as good as free software at aiding children's learning, you're damn right it makes the world a better place to get the software out to children," he fumes, "Stallman doesn't appear to actually give an acrobatic shit about learning, and sees OLPC as a vehicle for furthering his political agenda. It's shameful, the lot of it."

He does want to make clear that he opposes the idea of making Windows the sole operating system of the Sugar UI - but he is enthusiastic about porting it to as many operating systems as possible. In an internal memo Krstic wrote that the OLPC project should port the core Sugar technologies to other operating systems, and then leverage the developers on those operating systems in order to develop the actual user interfaces. "The core mistake of the present Sugar approach is that it couples phenomenally powerful ideas about learning - that it should be shared, collaborative, peer to peer, and open - with the notion that these ideas must come presented in an entirely new graphical paradigm. We reject this coupling as untenable."

Another big issue is the one of deployment, or distribution as I called it in my short piece. For a project aiming to bring laptops to third world countries, you'd think they would put a lot of emphasis on developing an infrastructure for getting laptops to places where there aren't even McDonald's restaurants, let alone Starbucks, and, well, roads. Well, you thought wrong.

Other than the incredible Carla Gomez-Monroy who worked on setting up the pilots, there was no one hired to work on deployment while I was at OLPC, with Uruguay's and Peru's combined 360,000 laptop rollout in progress. I was parachuted in as the sole OLPC person to deal with Uruguay, and sent to Peru at the last minute. And I'm really good at thinking on my feet, but what the shit do I know about deployment? Right around that time, Walter was demoted and theoretically made the "director of deployment," a position where he directed his expansive team of - himself. Then he left, and get this: now the company has half a million laptops in the wild, with no one even pretending to be officially in charge of deployment. "I quit," Walter told me on the phone after leaving, "because I can't continue to work on a lie."

Krstic then posts a part of an internal memo he wrote, in which he explains that not having a deployment strategy is going to be the biggest problem for OLPC - so the project very well knew this problem was coming, but didn't seem adamant to fix it. "That OLPC was never serious about solving deployment, and that it seems to no longer be interested in even trying, is criminal," Krstic explains, "Left uncorrected, it will turn the project into a historical fuckup unparalleled in scale."

Krstic doesn't just criticise the past, he also proposes how to go forward. He presents a paragraph from an email he sent to Negroponte, in which he explains what OLPC should become.

I continue to think it's a crying shame you're not taking advantage of how OLPC is positioned. Now that it's goaded the industry into working on low-cost laptops, OLPC could become a focus point for advocating constructionism, making educational content available, providing learning software, and keeping track of worldwide [one-to-one] deployments and the lessons arising from them. When a country chooses to do [a one-to-one computer program], OLPC could be the one-stop shop that actually works with them to make it happen, regardless of which laptop manufacturer is chosen, banking on the deployment plans it's cultivated from experience and the readily available base of software and content it keeps. In other words, OLPC could be the IBM Global Services of one-to-one laptop programs. This, I maintain, is the right way to go forward.

The school year is finally winding down, and after tomorrow seniors will be out on their own! I

The school year is finally winding down, and after tomorrow seniors will be out on their own! I'd like to think that we've prepared them enough through mock interviews, design boot camps, portfolio reviews, student shows, and critiques enough to face the 'real world', but it's a scary thought indeed when I ask a senior to access something from her dock and she replies, "What's that?"

What's that? WHAT'S THAT?! Please excuse me for a moment while I cry at my desk.

I really did walk away for a while and not help her. It's not really that I wouldn't, I just couldn't. She was very upset with me and frustrated that I continued asking her to fix problems in her piece. The fact that students spend so long in a program only to refuse learning anything seems rediculous. It wastes everyone's time. This particular student also plans to attend a high end art school. But guess what? Not knowing the basics after a year doesn't cut it in professional programs. Neither does not being able to take criticism. Not everyone is going to feel like your piece is fabulous. As a matter of fact, once people aren't shy around each other with critiques any longer, everyone will have something negative to say about your work. Taking criticism is an art all on its own. You must learn to filter advice for what can be applied to you and your work and what is simply their preference for how they would do their OWN work. If the piece can justifiably be defended and the reasoning is logical, by all means, defend it! Then they can defend their own opinions. Suddenly an intelligent design debate begins and life as you know it because wonderful (because there really is nothing better than intelligent conversation).

Designing requires thick skin. Period. End of story. (Not end of blog.) So let me type a few things that are going to be very painful for you to read as a beginning designer. I feel like this is a good "marines" design intro: break you down to build you back up.

1. Until you spend at least a year or more constantly working in the programs learning the ins and outs, you are terrible in them.

2. Your designs usually will suck until you practice much more.

3. Gradients really aren't okay, honest. Stop using them in everything you do.

4. Asking "what's wrong with it?" as a defensive, angry question will not help you learn.

5. Critiques hurt sometimes. Cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

6. Stop leaving white pixels when cutting things out in photoshop to paste into other things! It looks like a lazy designer did it.

7. Rebuild grainy, pixelated logos in illustrator. It's what it's there for.

8. No, design isn't easy.

9. No, you don't know everything.

10. Yes, you CAN do this...but it's not instant!

Apathy is the number one killer of design in my opinion. Right before someone is about to do something completely horrible to his or her design, I usually hear something along the lines of, "I don't even care anymore. Just wanna get it done." Bam. In that sentence, he or she has excused himself or herself from the responsibility of good design and decent working behavior. Care. Please. If you don't, get out of design, because you won't make it. You don't get to always do what you want to do. The client usually picks the logo you hate the most. The ink looks more dull on paper. You drive through it all and suddenly you find that life does, infact, go on.

So bust it, start caring now. RIGHT. THIS. SECOND. Blow me away with your newly created charge for a design revolution. (I hope.)

Hey all!

So we've got some pretty cool stuff coming up.

Registration for the Babysitting program is now open! This is a free course - two registered nurses will conduct the program. Bring a doll or stuffed animal with you (to double as a baby), and learn proper techniques for putting on a diaper. And more useful things, like first aid. At the end, for those who stay for the whole session, Certificates of Achievement are awarded. The program is on a Monday - July 7, 2008 from 2-4 pm.

At the end of the month, on July 29th, a Tuesday night, all those who passed the babysitting course (and their parents are welcome too) are invited to come to a Meet and Greet - where they can mingle with parents who are looking for babysitters! Nice way to land a job! Sign up is open, come register at the Reference Desk or call the library to register by phone.

And...

Two days later, on Wednesday July 9, 2008 - 7:00-8:30 pm - is a program given by a licensed nail technician, on how to do your own manicures! It's only $5.00 for this one, and you get a manicure kit to take home with you! It's a good deal, because buying the stuff separately in the stores can add up. And this way, you learn how to use the tools properly.

come sign up for these great programs!!

Just like some know that Amazon has a affiliate program.Like some of you already have your site up and going. And some of us know that Amazon Is like your Wal-mart.They have every item you can think of.For example Books,Music,Movies,Home supply, and many more.Well this is What the program is.

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Dan Balfour, professor in the School of Public and Nonprofit Administration and a faculty fellow of the Honors College at Grand Valley State University.

We discussed the organization, the program offering and our plan to run a pilot program in a GR public school classroom. We also talked about grant seeking classes offered at the SPNA at GVSU and how volunteer work is required in the curriculum at the SNPA (think "grant-writing", or "research-assistance" for this project... yeah).

Biggest moment of the conversation:

Marie-Claire: "So, if there was one thing that would be a grave mistake if I didn't do during this process, if there was one piece of advice you might give to me, what would that be?"

Dan: "Don't stop"

Thank you so for your time, advice, and resources Dan. It was great meeting you, and I hope to talk to you again soon.

Here are some of the common problems that plague projects that will hopefully bring awareness more quickly when they start to occur so you can put strategies and focus to correct quickly and be back on track to delivering a high payoff project on time.

Lose focus on who the real customer is and what will make them happy. You need to be relentlessly focused on who your customer is and what they demand. In both small and large projects, it is easy to fall into the trap of internal objectives, scope decisions that are not what the customer would do. This is a common mistake of great PM's. When project success matters, it serves me to focus the team and project relentlessly on what the customer is asking for.

Communication flow in all directions through team, stakeholders, customers, sponsors. For successful communication plans, it is important to collaborate with the project team, customers, end users, sponsors for all impacted groups and type of information that needs to flow. It is not always your job to push communication but bottom line is you are responsible to make sure it happens and its timely and effective. It is proven statistic that it takes multiple times, in multiple methods to get the message across. Error on the side of too much than not enough as it only builds trust and alignment and contributes to gaining successful support along the way.

Jump into execution mode without gaining alignment, common expectations and creating plans. This is often the default for new PM but even the most experienced can fall victim. Take the time to map out the "board" of decision makers, who has influence and what you need to go to gain support. Build relationships and alignment to the project goals so there are common expectations and clear objectives. The next step is to build a plan. Taking the time to plan will reduce time later that results in thrash in implementation activities.

Lack of focus and strategic priorities agreed to. This can lead to trying to do too much at the same time. As the leader of the project it is your job to keep focus of the team on the right areas, remove obstacles and ensure successful payoff at end of project. This takes ruthless prioritization, this means working with the customer to be realistic when you see conflicts, making trade-off decisions and driving clear priorities that are aligned.

Lack of anticipation of change, future needs and the inevitable change that will occur in any project. Every project has changes, but it is easy to get caught up in the great plan that you have developed rather than all the factors that impact it. Take the time to brainstorm, gather feedback from experts on where trouble areas may be, what scenarios could occur, and anticipate what alternatives would be to stay on track. Your customers are depending on it and being prepared with a plan is critical.

What other problems have you encountered along your project journey's?

Windows only: Want to direct your non-torrent-savvy friends or relatives to a download they really need to check out? Free web utility Torrent2Exe takes torrent download links—the kind you'd normally pass to your favorite BitTorrent client—and creates tiny .exe programs that do all the download work for whoever double-clicks them. You can also grab a link to post on your own site (or Twitter stream) that lets others download the same self-running torrent grabber. Great for distributing your own files to a select group of downloaders, or helping Linux-curious friends grab the right disk images. Torrent2Exe's downloaders are for Windows systems only.
