At the moment, I'm about to start writing a few tracks for an album that I'll be putting out. It will probably take a few months to figure everything out and decide which tracks I'm going to use and even write them for a start. Hopefully I'll learn how to use Audition to maybe produce a track but I'll also collaborate with a few other producers and hopefully singers and rappers :) I can't wait and this really is an exciting prospect for me!

So singers hit me up with your samples and I'll record a little sample for you to listen to :)

yeah for interns!

The summer went by way too fast.  We accomplished a lot at the studio/gallery the past three months.  I would not have been able to do it without the great help of my summer intern, Anna.  She is a Dominican University Fashion Design student.  What a great help she was this summer helping on displays, producing garments, cleaning and organizing (Yes, she didn't seem to mind doing some of the grunt work!)  I'm going to miss her.  She is a hard worker and will have a long and successful career ahead of her.  She is the seventh student intern I have had work for me in the last 4 years.  Dominican University has a grant program that they work with from the state of Illinois.  It benefits the students and the employers.  The students also get class credit for the hours they work, in addition to real life work experience.  The employer gets a worker for a reasonable rate with the agreement to teach some work skills to the students.  All in all I have found it to be a win/win situation.  Boy I'm going to miss her.

I started working again on a new book about my work, a long time in coming, it was delayed in a series of set backs, a computer stolen, hard drive crash, printer giving up from being overworked and writer who had serious family issues that to be right, kept her from working. A year later and I have better work anyhow, and will go about it on a small scale.

Print and web media offer such an inferior encounter to engaging real work but you just have to do it. Its part of the language and code of the art worlds. I realized I hit a level, a wall of sorts, I am on equal footing now with others CVwise and my work, although good and always improving will not be embraced until I step onto some new platforms.

Platforms are so necessary after all, ever after... they are loaded, people are pushed onto them with poor work, but then explode commercially, while others are rightly placed. If you have the right school, gallery, award, all these things can push you into more central positions.

The other day I received an email looking for artists 30sh or younger, they looked at my site intensely.  They want a hot scene. I am still in their scope, but I am not sure for how long. No wonder some friends hide their ages and act younger than they are. I found out shockingly one artist I knew was 40. She dresses like she was 22! Her gallery dropped her, I suspect she one of the oldest.

Well, off to create new PDF files, soon I will be back in Berlin and I will be searching new spaces... ever and ever after, amen.

As a busy summer draws to a close, I can't help but feel overwhelmed by all of the things that I wanted to accomplish, but didn't.  I always have high expectations of summer- I simultaneously envision grand swathes of leisure time, and massive productivity. Reading fluffy books outside in the sunshine coupled with tearing out and remodeling the bathroom.  Juggling just the right balance of beach picnics and bike rides with hours of undisturbed studio time.  I grossly misjudge the reality of life- that the daily demands of dishes and errands, housework and paperwork, email and all types of obligations, chosen and not, gobble up an amazing amount of my time. I wish I could clone myself sometimes so that I would have time to triple my studio time, be the mom and partner I want to be, bake my own bread, and learn to play violin, go and get my graduate degree, do yoga everyday..... My biggest challenge is figuring out (too often on the fly) what my priorities are. I am the quintessential gemini, with a finger in every pot. I have trouble saying no, and it gets me into trouble.  

All this is preamble to the fact that I have not been in the studio as much as I like, or blogging as much as I like, and some of the steam has gone out of my sails in my painting. And what I recognize is burnout. Not so much from doing too much, as not doing the things that allow productivity to continue... like riding a horse with out stopping to rest it or feed it, or water it. I've written in this blog about creative momentum, and how I keep that going. But it is not an automatically self-sustaining thing. If I am not careful, I tend to burn all of my creative fuel, my momentum carrying me forward, without stopping to gather, to practice new things, try new ideas, take risks, etc.  In my rush to complete new work for shows this summer, I've neglected the daily or weekly practice of renewal.  There is a certain safety in just focusing on an established body of work, and being productive in a measurable way.... sometimes process and exploratory work is not productive in the way that is easy to value- having a piece of artwork at the end of the day. Sometimes it just goes into the trash can, or sometimes nothing material comes of it at all. 

In avoiding this kind of work, it's come to my attention that one of the things I avoid above others, that absolutely makes my stomach squirm is drawing.  This is surprising even to me, as my drawing skills aren't exactly lacking.  I've spent many hours drawing. I can draw fairly well. So why the avoidance?  I've avoided keeping any kind of sketch book for close to twenty years. I think it has to do with how primary, how immediate it is.  It is an instant feedback process. An instant record of my perceptions, my state of mind, my patience, or more often the lack of. And so, so often it doesn't produce anything I would want to show to someone else. It feels extremely personal to me. More so than painting. I'm not sure why. 

So in the spirit of doing something that scares me everyday (or at least often), I've started doing small drawings on watercolor paper.  In ink. So unforgiving. To me, it feels like walking a tightrope without a net. But I am convinced that if I can keep doing this, I will be better able to develop new ideas for paintings, and have more of a creative flow. Here are a few that I actually like...

It doesn't solve my problem of prioritizing, but it may help with creative burnout... It will definitely develop humility.

On the other hand, I'm getting to do all sorts of stuff I would usually consider 'goofing off', or such. Yesterday and today, I've been working on a little project - I'm working on a design for a clock. I was actually had my original idea before class started, so this is pre-seniors-working on clocks, but it should be pretty cool. My current goal is a completely custom clock - I'm working on making oversized gears and mechanics that I can cut out on the laser cutter and bandsaw. I'm hoping to emphasize them in the design - they really are the most interesting part of a clock, so why hide them all behind a face? I'm thinking of meshing it with the style of my Lamp from last year - I think the simplistic style + emphasis on angles will work pretty well. That, of course, may change as the project goes on.

First step on that, although I've done some initial sketching, I feel I need an idea of what sort of space to allocate to mechanics at this scale - so my current plan is to cut a set of gears and get a working prototype, so I can then design some around it. Its probably a bit more towards the engineering side of things, but since I don't have an engineer working on this with me, its pretty much my job. Good thing clocks are relatively simple, right?

I'm also doing some prelim work on a sketching ideation tool for my website - just a simple random item generator to solve the problem of "what should I sketch?". Thats kinda boring, but it helps with stuff.

Studio-wise, we went on a field trip yesterday - and can now say I have a good idea of what it looks like when computer scientists try to get into product design by throwing every cool trick they know in one pile of technology. You get 'high tech' ways of tracking grandma's activity in her house through cameras mounted in her ceiling, which, when you boil it down, consists of breaking up the video feed into pictures and doing some programming at the level of what is taught in CS1315 to everyone at Tech. I mean really, I've done more complex programming in my spare time. And to top it off, everything was rife with assumptions as to "oh yeah, that would just work", or "we haven't gotten to that part yet...", or "If you don't tell old people its a computer, just say its a tool, and they'd be fine!". I mean, really. The only thing that approached to a complete concept was the computer console that was meant to help someone use a complex technology device, but I'm still not convinced it would be a commercially viable design. Not only did they assume every manufacturer would comply with a single standard to let them interface with the device, but each manufacturer would have to make a complete instruction set for each of their devices, for something that really boiled down to nothing more than a bigger display screen for a glucometer. If a manufacturer was to put that much effort into something, wouldn't it just be one hell of a lot easier to make the thing better designed in the first place?

All the other things pretty much boiled down to a video camera and a researcher sitting in a backroom simulating a $1000 device that would save you $10 in messed up cookies. All while looking creepy. Throw in that you'd pretty much have to have the kitchen designed around the thing to keep it from looking akward...

To summarize, the whole thing gets a resounding 'meh'. congratulations, you're a big waste of money. That said, I do see what they're trying to do - I just don't think looking to high (scary) technology is the way to address the problem. Old people don't like video screens, cameras in the roof, etc, anything that looks like a computer. At least, not this generation. That'll work in 40 years when my generation is retiring. I'm all for having a robot help me cook. And/or help me blow things up. Who said you have to get boring when you retire?

Buy one to get a smaller for a cheaper price. Hmm. This is just the excuse I was looking for to blow some cash. Let's see, the cheapest Dell Studio goes for what, $649 for a 15" display and then $99 for a Mini with a 9" screen. Spend $600 to save $250? Is that a paradox? Who cares! Dell's got a hit on it's hands. Beats the Asus Eee PC, MSI Wind, and Acer Aspire hands down. Finally the wait is over, hit the site and order yours.

Anche in questo caso dunque..prevenire è sempre meglio che curare!

Ad esempio, ieri ci siamo incontrati per un caffé e poi non siamo più riusciti a staccarci! Abbiamo iniziato a passeggiare, poi ci siamo chiusi a casa per ricordarci della cena ad ore tarde, per poi continuare la serata assieme! "Essere, Insieme" lessi tempo fa su un blog, ed ora lo sto vivendo! Da tempo non mi coricavo con questa placida beatitudine che mi scorre dentro!

Stamattina poi mi son svegliato con i miei compagni di corso che mi chiedevano aiuti per l'esame che stavano svolgendo (il mio famoso ed ormai conseguito ultimo esame), alla fine riassunta la soluzione in una trentina di messaggi ho provveduto ad inviarla a tre di loro che sapevo essere in aula (grazie per i messaggi gratis Wind!), come ringraziamento, oltre alle varie telefonate, da una di loro mi son trovato una ricarica da 10€ sul cellulare (che ho restituito con tutto il cuore, perché il solo gesto mi ha fatto un piacere enorme)!

Sempre nella mattinata una mia amica che mi ha visto in compagnia di V si è fatta sentire per complimentarsi con me, per dirmi che V è davvero una bellissima ragazza (se sapesse poi quanto sia uno dei suoi pregi minori!) e che era davvero contenta di vedermi felice!

Spulciando i blog, sull'album Flickr di un mio amico noto una nuova foto di ringraziamento verso gli amici (per le mie paranoie non inserisco il bellissimo titolo per evitare riferimenti) con in pedice "grazie Tiziochenonconoscete e Psicosi" (in realtà il grazie è riferito a noi due perché gli unici soggetti della foto, e non perché i soli suoi amici! ^_^).

Poi arrivati ad ora pranzo il mio cuginetto di 3 anni ha iniziato a placcarmi pesante e "mi son visto costretto" a giocare con lui tutto il tempo, anche durante le telefonate di cui sopra! ^_^' Povera mia zia che non sapeva più cosa fare quando il brigante ha iniziato a smontare casa ed io ero in pausa pranzo! :)

... Perché stare bene con gli altri è sintomo di stare bene con se stessi! :)

Certo non sarà comodo portarsene una in viaggio ma le mucche, placide produttrici di latte, possiedono davvero un inaspettato talento di “bussole”. Secondo un recente studio pubblicato su PNAS, vacche ed altri ruminanti preferiscono infatti allinearsi lungo la direzione da nord a sud.

Secondo Sabine Begall, dell'Università di Duisberg-Essen in Germania, questi quadrupedi, in qualche modo ancora sconosciuto, riescono a percepire il campo magnetico terrestre. “È sorprendente che un fenomeno cosi ubiquitario e diffuso non sia mai stato rilevato da allevatori e da cacciatori per centinaia d'anni,” è stato il commento di Begall.

La scienziata ha analizzato le immagini di più di 8000 capi di bestiame prese da Google Earth. Le foto sono state scelte in modo che gli animali fossero chiaramente visibili, all'aperto e lontano da abbeveratoi o mangiatoie, che potevano influenzare il loro modo di disporsi.

La mucca non è il solo animale che è stato preso in considerazione: gli scienziati hanno infatti analizzato sul campo la posizione di cervi e caprioli nella Repubblica Ceca, anche osservandone le impronte del corpo lasciate nella neve, evidenziando anche in questo caso una preferenza per l'allineamento nord-sud.

La spiegazione piu ovvia secondo Begall è da escludere: gli animali non si dispongono in questo modo per massimizzare la quantità di calore solare assorbita attraverso l'epidermide. Begall è certa di questo perché i ricercatori hanno preso in esame anche le immagini di mucche molto vicine ai poli. Se l'ipotesi “termica” fosse vera gli animali sarebbero orientati verso il nord reale, e non verso quello magnetico, come in effetti accade. Non è stata inoltre trovata neanche una correlazione con la direzione del vento.

La capacità di percepire il campo magnetico terrestre è stata evidenziata in molti altri animali, pipistrelli, topi, piccioni, ed è dunque plausibile che anche erbivori come la mucca e i cervi possiedano questa dote. Ora non resta che confermare i risultati con prove di tipo sperimentale.
