I've been constantly refreshing the the Canadian Dell site and this morning I was pleasantly surprised that the Mini 9 is not available. Awesome! One thing odd I noticed though, no Ubuntu option. WTF?

Just for fun I decided to call up the 1-800 number. On hold for a short while I got connected to and agent over in India (surprise, surprise) I tell him, "I'm on the Canadian website, and I noticed there's no option for Ubuntu for the Mini 9, can I order the Mini 9 with Ubuntu instead of Windows XP?" After repeating myself and speaking slowly he informed me that I had been connected to the wrong department and forwards my call to another agent.

On hold for a bit longer I get connected to another agent. I ask the same question. He puts me on hold for a while and then comes back with this, "Currently the Mini 9 is not available with Ubuntu" and when I asked him if there were any plans to offer it with Ubuntu pre-installed he said that "this is a brand new launch, no information is available regarding that configuration". Ok no problem, thanks.

He didn't seem to want to let me off the line. Smelling a potential sale he gave me his agent code/number to put in when/if I decided to go ahead and purchase it online. This way he would be my "personal contact" and would be available for post purchase support. Um, yeah right. How about just telling me the truth? You get a commission, duh!

So I'm a little disappointed. U.S. customers have the option but Canadian are getting no Ubuntu love. Guess I'll wait and see if there are any changes in the upcoming days.

More than any day of the month, I always dread the Wednesday morning after Patch Tuesday. Sure, I like the fact that Windows automatically keeps my system as secure as possible by automatically downloading updates during the night and applying them. But I get so frustrated the morning after. My system has restarted, and I have to go through the entire login and reload all my apps just to check my e-mail and grab my latest podcasts via the Zune software. Not a pleasant thing to go through before your first cup of coffee. But thanks to todays Tekzilla tip, no more!!!

Today’s Tekzilla tip of the day discloses just how to set your system to no longer automatically reboot, but instead wait for you. It was so good I’m going to pass it along. First, you need to open the Group Policy Editor. In XP do a Start, Run, and type GPEDIT. In Vista you can also run GPEDIT from the command line.

When Local Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to Local Computer Policy, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, then finally Windows Update.

The row you are looking for is “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations”. Double click on it, then change it’s state to enabled, then click OK.

You will have to reboot your computer for this to take effect. Then the horror of waking up Wednesday mornings, dreading the overnight reboot will be a thing of the past.

While you are here, you may also wish to change the “Delay restart for scheduled installations” setting. By default this is set to 5 minutes. This is the screen that pops up and says ‘hey I just installed some stuff, I need to reboot to finish’ and your two choices are ‘Restart Now’ and ‘Restart Later’. But if you hit ‘Restart Later’ you are annoyed again a mere five minutes later. Well this is where you can adjust this. Open up the dialog, click Enabled, then you can change the time from the default of 5 minutes up to 30 minutes.

As with any time you go mucking around in your registry or policy settings, you do so at your own risk. Make sure you understand what is going on before you go changing things.

All I know is I’ll be sleeping a whole lot more soundly on Tuesday nights now.

Now, this is prertty much obvious to many people, and if you're reading this blog it is probably obvious to you as well, but I'm sure many people also know that they have friends who will incorrectly refer to their computer's hard disk space. A common example...

Friend: "My computer isn't fast enough, how do I make it faster?"
Me: "How much memory do you have?"
Friend: "250 g bytes"
Me: "What?"
Friend: "My computer came with 250GB"
Me: "No, not your hard drive space, your RAM."
Friend: "My What?"

At that point, I'd usually guide them to the whole right clicking My Computer > Properties thing to the part where it will usually tell them that either A: they've been running off 256 Megs of RAM with a Windows XP computer or B: they've been running off 1GB of RAM on a Vista PC. And so, I casually explain to them the difference between Hard Disk space and Memory, and I can tell by the end of the conversation, despite my best efforts to dumb down my explanation 10 notches, that they still have no idea what I'm trying to tell them.

"But how does my computer store stuff then?"

If you or someone else has absolutely no idea still what the difference is, I've found both simple and complicated ways to describe it.

RAM and Hard Drive space are like long and short term memory.

If you have a test coming up tomorrow, but you forgot about it and you just stayed up until 2 AM drinking, then probably the first thing you'll do in the morning is 1: find something to relieve you of your terrible hangover and 2: cram as much as you can for fast access into your head. Well, if a computer wants to access something incredibly fast, it stores the information in its RAM, or Random Access Memory. Here, it can be accessed and changed at an extremely high speeds, unilke your hard drive. However, some people think everything they do is stored in their RAM forever. They're lucky this isn't the case, because anything stored in your RAM ceases to exist shortly after you turn off your computer, thus explaining why when you start up Windows takes so long to boot, because it has to load all its shit back into your RAM, taking significant amounts of time.

Hard drive space is like long term memory, it takes longer to get it there (although it still happens so fast that you really won't notice), but it will be there for a very long time. Your hard drive will retain information until:

It breaks (this happens sooner than a lot of people think, but its still long enough to where you'd have to be crazy to keep a computer long enough for it to happen)

You or someone else wipes your hard drive.

You visit a porn website and install a virus because in your current state you'll click "Yes" to anything, as long as the stupid dialog box gets out of the way of the views of the new High-res jpegs you just found.

You delete the file.

If all else fails...

Hard Drives look like this:

And RAM looks like this:

Seeing that they probably do those "Find the differences between these two pictures" puzzles that you'll most likely find in the latest edition of Nick Jr Magazine, they should be able to spot at least a few minor differences. If they can't, just be honest and tell them that they may want to have a repair shop take care of the problem and not do it themselves, because else you'll get a call a week later saying they busted their computer by shoving the RAM forcibly into a PCI slot.

----------------

So next time someone frustrates you by saying "I've got 500GB of ram in my computer and you told me you only have 3", you'll be able to explain to them that it is because you actually knew what you were talking about, and also give them the comparison above. I've used it for like 4 people, and they all got a pretty good understanding.

I've been playing around with VMWare for about 2 years and have a fair amount of experience with the ESX and GSX Server versions as well as the VMWare Player and Fusion for Mac. So it is not without some small amount of apprehension that I confess that I still have not managed to properly get an XP VM to properly take advantage of my dual DVD writers. This is largely because, by default, a VM has limited generic hardware simulation. I'm fine with that - I understand it reduces certain avenues of compromise - but I noticed that one workaround is the use of USB devices. When I plug a USB device into the machine and enable it for the VM it gets loaded and requires a unique device driver. This would allow me to get around the generic hardware issue, which is really a function of my own laziness, and get these devices back in use.

The ultimate goal, of course, is that I can then convert my one XP instance and use it virtually with the ability to read to and write from DVD disks. I'm gonna pick up some burners and test it out.

Have you ever wished you could go back in time…and un-do something you did? Windows’ bui

Have you ever wished you could go back in time...and un-do something you did? Windows' built-in recovery tool, System Restore allows your computer to do what you and I cannot do, jump back in history to a time when everything was working properly, and that's a pretty neat trick!

Tip of the day: I should caution you that System Restore is not a panacea-- there are some things it copies and restores and some things it doesn't.
* It does not recover data once the Recycle bin has been emptied -- you need to use Shadow Copy or an undelete utility for that.
* It doesn't recover lost or corrupted User passwords.

It is, however, "user friendly" and simple to use. It does, automatically, take "snapshots" of the Registry and some dynamic system files, and is a good way to get an unstable and/or non-booting system back on its feet again without losing your files and user settings.

To get started, you need to make sure that System Restore is turned on, and that it has at least 200 megabytes of free hard-drive space to store snapshots on.

Turn on System Restore by clicking Start and right-click My Computer >Properties >System Restore tab and make sure there's no check in the box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives."

While you're there, select the drive, or partition, where you want to store the snapshots and click the Settings button. Now you can use the slider to denote the amount of memory you want to devote to System Restore. I set mine to about 500 MB's, which gives me a good selection of Restore Points (snapshots) without losing too much storage. And now you are set: Windows will start taking snapshots whenever you make a 'major' change, like installing a program or device driver.

There are a couple of different ways to use System Restore to go back in time. In the first scenario, Windows still functions, and boots, but is unstable and crashes or freezes frequently.

1) Use System Restore by clicking Start >Programs >Accessories >Sytem Tools >System Restore. This will launch the System Restore Wizard. By default, the radio button "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is already selected so hit the Next button.

Now you will see a calendar, which has the available snapshots/times in bold.

2) Start with the most recent one first, and click "Next", and then "OK". Your system will reboot, take a while to load, and then a message saying "Your system has been successfully restored to date selected" will appear.

If this doesn't happen, you will see an error message-- retry using the next most recent Restore Point. You may have to try several.

The next scenario is when you're in a bad situation where Windows just BSOD's ("blue screens"), or won't even boot. Boot your machine and hit, repeatedly, the F8 key as if you were trying to get into Safe Mode.

When the white-on-black Advanced Start Up screen appears do not hit any key(s) just yet. Before too long a dialogue will open asking whether you want to continue on into Safe Mode...Y/N? Type an "N" for "no". This will launch the System Restore Wizard and you follow the steps as outlined above.

Should this dialogue not open after a suitable wait, use your up/down arrow keys to highlight (select) "Safe Mode" and hit Enter. You will now be in the funny-looking, petite version of Windows called, you guessed it, "Safe Mode". It's easy to know that you are, because it clearly says Safe Mode in all four corners of your desktop. Now you can access System Restore through the Start >Programs menu. Again, follow the steps as outlined above.

Occasionally System Restore cannot undo all the damage and it doesn't work as we'd hoped. If the damage was done by malware such as a virus that also infected your snapshots, it may not work at all. But it is a powerful tool and has saved me many times over the years. It is quick, simple, and usually very effective-- and it's free!

[For more answers on System Restore, see my two follow-up posts; "A quick System Restore addenda", and "questions answered".]

Today's free link: I mentioned undelete utilities, and there are many out there for you to try. Try to recover files by starting with a scan using Softperfect File Recovery. "...a free and useful tool to restore accidentally deleted files from hard and floppy disks, USB flash drives, CF and SD cards and other storage media. It supports the popular file systems such as FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and NTFS5 with compression and encryption. If your important files disappeared and you can’t find them in the recycle bin, try this software product and get the files back to life. Easy to use, no installation is required."

Ubuntu

/etc/X11/xkb/symbols

ua
Директива
xkb_symbols "basic"
xkb_symbols "winkeys"
sudo cp /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/ua ~/ua.bac

// Мой собственный вариант раскладки
partial alphanumeric_keys
xkb_symbols "mykeylist" {

name[Group1]= "Ukraine - My key list";
}

include "language(variant)"
basic
include "level3(ralt_switch)"
xkb_symbols "basic"
.

TLDE

BKSL

LSGT

CAPS

Caps Look

ESC

Escape

LALT, RALT, LWIN, RWIN

partial alphanumeric_keys

key <AD01> { [ ] };

ampersand

key <AD01> { [ Cyrillic_shorti, Cyrillic_SHORTI, ampersand, dollar ] };

ampersand

[caption id="attachment_142" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Результат. Ubuntu 8.04"][/caption]

MS Windows

Right Alt treated as Ctrl+Alt (also known as AltGr),

[caption id="attachment_148" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Установка раскладки"][/caption]

1. Click Start and choose Run...,
2. In Run window type regedit and press Enter (OK),
3. Left mouse click on My Computer so he become blue,
4. Go to Edit and in drop down menu choose Find,
5. In search windows type IPEnableRouter and click on Find or Find Next,
6. When you find first IPEnableRouter his Value should be 0,
7. Double mouse click on that item (IPEnableRouter) and change his Value on 1,
8. Go to Edit and in drop down menu choose Find Next,
9. Repeat this procedure until regedit tells you that he can't find more search term,.
Usually it will be 3 locations on which you can find this setup. They should be in next locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
which could be ControlSet002 or ControlSet003 or some other number but most interesting for us is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

and *usually* the OS should be working as a gateway.

Don't you love windows?
