With so many ways of monetization available to bloggers in general, it’s very difficult to mak

With so many ways of monetization available to bloggers in general, it's very difficult to make an informed decision on what's best for your blog. PPC marketing has to be one of the most effective ways to make some money from your efforts, and it's still the most popular monetization method available.

Image via Wikipedia

Whether you choose Adsense, Yahoo PPC network, chitika, bidvertiser, and my personal favorite aimed at the South African market Peppor remains up to personal taste.

There is a few tips I would like to offer.

If your South African, you might want to choose peppor, because it's a South African network, payouts are fast and made directly into your bank account. The drawback is that you get paid in ZAR whereas with the other one's payment are made in US $, where you get to leverage on the rand to dollar exchange rate, to increase you earnings dramatically.

If you like the idea of getting paid in US $, there's no better network than Google's Adsense. This is the most widely used and most popular network. - The drawbacks being, that you could very easily lose all your earnings due to invalid click impressions, that you aren't even aware of. You get paid by checque, where there is some waiting time involved.

Out of the many monetizing methods I'll be explaining on this blog, displaying PPC ads is probably one of the best ways to monetize your blog, it's also one of the easiest ways to make money from your blog, with only a small piece of code nesecary to start displaying ads on your website. However as with all monetizing methods there are a few things to consider before starting to display ads.

It's been shown that displaying ads on your website, has a decremental effect on traffic. Do you receive enough visitors, so that this doesn't affect your blog?

You won't make thousands of dollars from PPC marketing, there are a few people that do, but it's not likely you'll make that off the start.

We all know that too much of a good thing is a bad thing, and with so many websites displaying ads, visitors have become immune to most ads. They rarely click on ads these days. Think about it, how many ads do you click on a website?

There's a lot of advertisers that use LCC's , or MFA's, simply put, this is ads that either pay you very little, or nothing at all. Adsense offers you the opportunity to block out 200 url's but this isn't nearly enough to combat all the MFA's or LCC's.

If you're starting out PPC marketing is one of the least labour intensive ways you can use to monetize your blog, and it certainly get's my vote:)

Bruce Lee fans are marking the 35th anniversary of his death with an exhibit featuring movie posters, magazine covers and books about the action star.

Also among the 800 items on display are letters written by Lee that detail his life in the U.S., where he attended college and taught kung fu before returning to Hong Kong.

Danny Chan, who plays Lee in an upcoming Chinese TV series, attended the opening ceremony of the exhibit Friday, organized by the Hong Kong-based Bruce Lee Club.

Chan said he hopes the exhibit will improve public understanding of Lee.

"A lot of people like Bruce Lee but know very little about him," he said.

Lee died July 20, 1973, at 32 from swelling of the brain.

He was known for movies in which he portrayed characters who defended the Chinese and the working class from oppressors. His credits include "The Chinese Connection" "Return of the Dragon" and "Enter the Dragon."

Talks are also ongoing about turning Lee's former home in Hong Kong into a museum. The philanthropist who owns the two-story house has offered to donate the property and has lobbied the government to help convert it into a museum.

12:43 pm

Is Yahoo Serious?- A blow was dealt to Yahoo usurper Carl Icahn today when Legg Mason announced they would back Yahoo in a takeover bid. Legg, which disclosed it owns 60.7 million shares of Yahoo, or 4.4 percent of outstanding shares, urged Yahoo and Icahn to settle their differences ahead of Yahoo's August 1 shareholders meeting. If Microsoft wants to acquire Yahoo, it can make the terms and conditions of its offer public," Legg said in a statement. "If Yahoo shareholders support it, I am confident the board of Yahoo will accept it " (Technology: Is Yahoo Serious). The firm's portfolio manager Bill Miller told Reuters last week Icahn would have more support if he promised not to sell Yahoo below $33 per share. He also urged Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to make its offer public. Legg backed Yahoo's actions since Microsoft made its $47.5 billion offer to buy Yahoo public earlier this year. Okay? What does Legg Mason know about the tech industry? Aren't they the company that sponsors professional tennis matches and yacht racing? Obviously that tool Jerry Yang, Yahoo's CEO, made some hefty promises to the folks at Mason or the hostile takeover would have come long ago. Yang is dilirious if he thinks he can usher in the coming years as captain of Yahoo's wheelhouse. He has single-handedly dragged the worth of his company to the bottom of the barrell due to his stubbornness and flighty visions. If Yahoo's shareholders want to stay afloat as a privateer in a huge market they need to get rid of that geek Jerry Yang and the rest of his merry, pocket-protector pals, and that includes Legg Mason. As of now, there aren't too many suitors interested in the fleeting company, or a battle with Icahn and Microsoft. Google is drowning in finacial woes as stocks plunged today and nobody else has the liquid assets or minerals to step up and match Microsofts' offer, whether it be private or public. Get serious Jerry. Take the money and open up an internet cafe in the Bahamas. If you don't you'll be serving coffee and donuts from a street cart in Frisco.

I have to admit that I love watching the Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL saga unfold. What is of peculia

I have to admit that I love watching the Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL saga unfold. What is of peculiar interest to me is the number of industry analysts, pundits, and writers that seem to know absolutely nothing about technology, let alone business, that continue to write absurd articles about the validity of a Microsoft merger. Outside of Carl Icahn's arguments regarding shareholder value, does a Microsoft acquisition of Yahoo make any sense?

Yahoo's strength lies more within their portal and less within their search and advertisement placements. A fact that Yahoo themselves have recognized via their proposed link with Google AdSense. As a destination, Yahoo is "first-rate" with limited competition. From Yahoo News and Finance, to Instant Messaging and Email, Yahoo is a truly a remarkable destination. However, their search and advertising business leaves a lot to be desired.

Back-in-the-day, Google became a giant by having relevant search with limited advertising. In fact, Google's search was so accurate that while employed by Inktomi, a rival to Google, many of us used it instead of our own search technology. Google's genius was creating a revenue platform around their search technology that continues to generate billions of dollars a year. Yahoo tried to counter Google's superior technology by purchasing both Inktomi and Overture. Sadly, history won't be kind to either of those decisions.

Examining Microsoft yields many concrete comparisons to Yahoo. Microsoft is a decent portal destination with a wide array of on-line services. However, their search and advertisement placements are horrible. Microsoft attempted to correct the situation by engaging in a massive engineering and development effort culminating with the launch of a "new" search engine and purchasing aQuantive. However, neither of these moves has made a dent in Google's armor.

Simply put, Google's search experience is superior to both Microsoft and Yahoo. It's clean, fairly relevant (getting worse), and extremely useable. Additionally, Google's AdSense and accompanying management tools are miles ahead of both Yahoo and Microsoft. Therefore, why does a Microsoft and Yahoo acquisition make sense?

Combining Microsoft and Yahoo's sub-par search engine technology is complicated and the results are sure to be uninspiring. Furthermore, the same can be said of a combination of their respective advertising systems. Unfortunately, this is not a math problem and the combination of these units does not equate to generating long term revenue success. How hard is it to switch from Yahoo to Google or Microsoft to Google advertising?

Have we forgotten that Microsoft maintains a healthy business that is growing revenues and continues to compete across multiple markets? They have billions of cash in the bank with billions more arriving every year on the heels of new and updated products that are beginning to hit the market. The perceived and overblown rivalry between Google and Microsoft is ridiculous. Google needs more products, new ideas, and years of prolonged growth to even get into Microsoft's league (I'll leave that to another article).

While a combination of Microsoft and Yahoo would surely line the pockets of large institutional investors, investment banks, M&A advisors, and Carl Icahn himself, it only makes sense if their intent is to combine the portals and ditch the rest. Based on Microsoft's offer and Icahn's plans to sell only Yahoo's search business to Microsoft, this acquisition makes no sense.

Free Dictionary defines denial as : “a process by which painful thoughts are not permitted in

Free Dictionary defines denial as : "a process by which painful thoughts are not permitted into the consciousness." Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the exact description of the times we're living in and through right now: Banks deny they have problems, the President is the master of denial, TV networks deny the fact that their viewership is aging rapidly, advertising agencies continue to do business as usual while their business is dying around them. And the list goes on and on: Just look at industries changing (in some instances disappearing in front of our eyes) - Automotive, Yahoo!, Retailers, Record Labels.

Businesses are organisms. I always compare them to human beings. They have their own consciousness, their own soul, their own spirit. - And most companies act like smokers: They know they're indulging in bad habits, a habit that will kill them one day. Every day they learn new facts how the smoke contains millions of carcinogens, how your chances of cancer/heart disease increase every time you light up. Standing outside in the rain, they suck on their cigarettes either proclaiming to quit soon or somehow rationalizing that they enjoy their habit.

Denial can come in various forms: Minimizing (It's not going to be that bad), Cockiness (I've handled more difficult situations before), Rationalizing (Our revenue is down by 5%, we don't have a real problem), Blaming (The clients don't get it) and Intellectualizing (The new study shows everything will be good.) Or you can just lie to yourself, manipulate others, be defiant or withdraw. In the end, all denial ends in distaster.

Fact is, the advent of personal technology has changed media consumption behavior. Fact is, we're undergoing dramatic demographic changes. And, fact is, humans are changing the way they interact with each other and institutions in new, never before seen ways.

These facts should lead businesses to rethink their business/marketing/service/brand strategies. Better today since delay is the deadliest form of denial. Just ask how IndyMac, Chrysler and Yahoo feel about their denials now.

Fresh out of college, and with only traditional marketing tools under my belt, I started at Knotice

Fresh out of college, and with only traditional marketing tools under my belt, I started at Knotice a couple of months ago with only a little bit of knowledge about the digital marketing world. In my first blog meeting, everyone started tossing around the term behavioral targeting, a term I wasn't completely aware of. The end result is this blog post, and a series of future posts, intended to help others that are new to this space and are afraid to ask questions.

You may be asking yourself, what exactly is behavioral targeting and how does it affect me as a marketer? I did a bunch of research and here’s what I found.

First, there are two different types of behavioral targeting, which are very different from each other. There is onsite behavioral targeting and network behavioral targeting. Both have their respective advantages and disadvantages. Onsite behavioral targeting is when a company collects data for a specific user only on their site. The company then takes the data they collect and uses it to post more relevant offers to that user while they’re on the site. For example, an eCommerce company knows the past purchase history of a customer, and offers complementary products when they return to their site.

Network behavioral targeting is when a company collects a user’s data across an unlimited number of Internet sites. This means that they track you no matter what site you’re on and then serve you ads and offers all over the Internet based on your past online activity. For example, you visit several different eCommerce sites in search of horse attire. Then when you go on to a site like Yahoo, you’d see ads related to horses; or, on a site like Ebay you’d only see content that relates to horse gear when you first hit the homepage.

Recently, there’s been a lot of concern among consumers about behavioral targeting. I’m not an expert, but it seems like onsite targeting is less invasive and creates less “ad noise.” I can see how some consumers see network behavioral targeting as an online stalker. To me, onsite behavioral targeting is like a sales person making suggestions to me.

Here are a couple articles I think are great for beginners to find out more about behavioral targeting and how marketers are utilizing it:

Yahoo/MSN/AOL = demographics. We know who these people are and messaging to the right people is what drives messaging success.

So far Google has clearly taken the lead but neither camp has done well on both fronts.

Interesting times ahead. Having just typed this I considered deleting the comment as the most obvious in my time as a blogger. Instead I will leave it and let all 8 readers know that I know that was a pretty obvious (though still accurate) assessment of the situation.

When it comes to proxy battles, the only shareholders that matter are Institutional ones as they hold large amounts of stock and can influence which way these battles go. Therefore it's a good thing for Yahoo that Legg Mason Capital Management who owns 4.4% of Yahoo stock has said that it will vote for Yahoo's current board:

"We believe the current Board acted with care and diligence when evaluating Microsoft's offers. We believe the Board is independent and focused on value creation for long-term shareholders," Bill Miller, chairman and chief investment officer of Legg Mason said in a release.

If other Institutional investors follow the same path, Icahn may not win this battle. Expect similar statements to start appearing over the next few days.

UPDATE: Yahoo now has a site that gives its spin on the proxy fight.

Yes, he showed up....The President, George W. Bush....in person. What an exciting day for our little town in the far north state of California. Touching down at the Redding Airprt just after 2 PM, thousands were there to greet him, but unfortanately the tight schedule did not allow for much interaction with the public. All of the state and local politicians stood behind the President as he addressed firefightters and took a good look at the Fire Attack base. Then, after a helicopter tour over the burned areas, he returned to the Airport to honor Boy Scouts active in clearing the Pacific Trail.

At 4:30 PM...off they went as Air Force One headed north out of the airport then turning to the east and south and right over my home in Palo Cedro. What a sight, and what a day.

A first for Redding in that this was the first seated President to visit Redding since John Kennedy when he dedicated Whiskeytown Dam in the early '60's.

The Telegraph Media Group made an interesting move on Thursday 17th July 2008 by announcing that Google Apps will replace the excising Microsoft Office as the productivity suit for their 1400 employees. In my opinion this land mark move shows that Microsoft might have a battle on their hands in the future if they do not keep a serious eye on Google. Ok fine, it’s not like Microsoft are going to miss the 1400 business users but I do think this is the start of large business taking a chance and breaking away from the safe option.

When you look at it in the context of what it represents, The Telegraph Media Group completely rely on the software it uses to deliver their documents safely and efficiently and will not have taken this decision lightly.

Paul Cheesbrough, TMG chief information officer reported “We had the same reservations as many technologists about moving our software into the cloud. But increasingly so much of our business is on the Internet, in terms of the content we produce for our customers and the news feeds we use from the likes of Reuters. The deal is also a key part of our plan to move TMG towards a ‘cloud computing’ model.”

Companies that rely on the web to run their business will eventually reach the same conclusion as The Telegraph Media Group. When it comes to software Microsoft have by far the largest installed customer base but now the internet is becoming more and more important for business to deliver their messages across to the masses it makes total sense for Google to want a piece of the Microsoft Pie. Its gone beyond the office politics question and moved straight in category of good business sense.

I say go for it Google!

[caption id="attachment_295" align="aligncenter" width="184" caption="Live blog: Google rose loses bloom again"][/caption]
Most investors would be delighted with a 35 percent increase in net income, but not when it's Google in a soft advertising market and the results fell short of expectations. Here are highlights of what Chief Executive Eric Schmidt and others had to say during Google's conference call about its second-quarter financial results.

• To recap, Google reported net income of 1.25 billion, a 35 percent increase over the earlier year. But earnings per share, excluding various items, were $4.63 per share, short of the $4.74 expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. Revenue increased 39 percent to $5.37 billion. Excluding $1.47 billion in commissions called traffic acquisition costs, the revenue was $3.88 billion. Analysts had expected revenue, excluding commissions, of $3.9 billion.
• "We're very pleased with what we believe are good results in one of the weaker quarters in our normal cycle," Schmidt said. "Traffic and revenue held up well despite uncertain economic conditions."

• "The partnership with Yahoo is obviously the signature event," Schmidt said of the quarter. "We believe the ad deal is a win for the industry because it allows Yahoo to remain independent."

• Outgoing CFO George Reyes said the biggest expense was Google's data centers; capital expenses totaled $698 million. Hiring was a relatively slow, increasing by only 448 to reach 19,604.

• Chief Economist Hal Varian: "Despite the weakness in the economy, ad revenue seems to be holding up well in most sectors." The weakest sector looks like real estate.

• Co-founder Sergey Brin: "We substantially increased the size of our index. The index we refresh every few minutes has grown tremendously, so our users get much fresher and faster results across a greater range of sources."

• Brin: "AdSense now allows third parties to host and serve ads. It's important to many advertisers. Lenovo is now advertising with us because we can support third-party advertising."

• Ah, now to the heart of the matter. Brin said Google is having second thoughts about how much it reduced "coverage": the fraction of search results that have ads. Google generally tries to reduce coverage to drop low-quality ads that searchers don't click on, but it may have overshot the mark, he said.

"There is some evidence that we were perhaps a little overly aggressive in decreasing coverage in the past quarter," Brin said. "Historically...we try to reduce our coverage at the same time as improving the monetization. Clearly that's not the ideal strategy indefinitely, because we don't want to end up with no ads. From a quality point of view, ads are a significant addition to our page."

• Schmidt, who has spoken of the urgency of converting YouTube popularity into revenue, had this to add: "We're enormously happy with YouTube. The cultural and end-user success is far, far greater than we ever expected. We're working on revenue scenarios, and newer (ad) products. I personally do not believe the perfect YouTube ad (mechanism) has been invented. We just rolled out in-video ads."

• More from Schmidt on YouTube, as he calls finding the right ad model the "holy grail" that will mean tremendous revenue.

• Brin said Google has "increased coverage in universal search," under which Google search results show not just a list of Web pages but also pull in results such as maps, videos, and images.

In the first quarter about a tenth of queries showed universal search results, but now, "A bit under a third of our queries now have a bit of universal search in them," Brin said. "Our feeling is, and our experiments (show), this is significantly improved information for our users. I think you'll find increasing universal coverage in corpuses that you wouldn't expect." And it's the unexpected universal results that are valuable, he said, where, for example, Google shows a video on a search where the user wouldn't have thought to click on the video search tab.

• I wasn't overpowered by the ability to add artwork or other fancier graphical skins to iGoogle, the company's customizable home page, but apparently some people were when the company launched it in April. "Hundreds of thousands signed up for iGoogle because of themes," Brin said.

This says something about User-Generated Content -- status quo is shifting, blurring the lines between amateur and pro.

Read the NYT article here:

"Great Photo On Flickr? Getty Might Pay You For It"

Which I think should read: Getty might just make you pay for it -- because really, they're trying to monetize the photography that we the people can now get at pretty affordable rates compared to the exorbitant amounts Getty charges -- which, I know, I know, is so they can pay their photographers and so their photographers can pay their bills.

But still... I'm not sure what this means -- could someone go onto my blog and offer me a book deal? yes. So why not Getty being allowed the freedom to trawl photographers' work to offer them a paying gig for what they do for fun. More power to ya! I'm just being selfish here, wanting the access to images for free 24/7.

If the photos are owned by Getty, at least we'll be able to find them with a little more ease. sheesh! Have you tried the Flickr "Search" tool. It sucks. Oh yeah, that's right. Flickr is owned by Yahoo. hmmm. Maybe the Yahoo-Microsoft deal would've helped out Flickr search with some of Live Search's technology. Maybe whomever runs the categorization tools or the backend site functionality at Flickr would get some fire under their ass and improve this!!!

But, alas, expectations get me into trouble every time.
